VISITING A CHILDREN'S HOSPICE | Special Needs Family Vlog - Children's Hospice SW - Cerebral Palsy

Spend the day with us at Little Harbour, part of Children's Hospice South West. This was our first visit at a children's hospice as a special needs family, and we were just completely blown away by the inclusiveness and the facilities.
We were reluctant, at first, to accept a referral to a children's hospice, because well, we thought it would be a hospice environment - sad, hopeless and not suitable for our Avery or our family's point in our journey. But we were so wrong, this is definitely one of those situations where you really need to see it to believe it. Little Harbour was the perfect place to spend time as a family, it in fact had a positive, hopeful atmosphere and I'm so glad we finally visited a children's hospice.

Children's Hospice South West is a charity run organisation, and an amazing charity to donate to. This video is not sponsored our family were simply service users, and we were completely blown away by the facilities and the establishment that they had built to support families with children with additional and complex medical needs.
We got to experience a lot of their facilities while we were there. They had messy play, musical instruments, an amazing family TV room, a soft play area, a lovely sized outdoor area.. and so much more! They even have a hydrotherapy pool which we are very much looking forward to trying out in the future. Alongside all of the fun, family based facilities they also had plenty of specialised equipments to help make children with medical needs more comfortable.
I just cannot praise this place enough, the dedication the staff have to make sure your whole family have a nice time together is wonderful. They were all so lovely and helpful.
If you are a family in the South West of England caring for a medically complex or seriously ill child, I would 100% recommend making a referral to Children's Hospice South West. It really felt like a home away from home and I cant wait to take my family again.

I went on to the Little Harbour website to read more about their services. And lo and behold...they had Avery's Story on there 😀 Such a lovely place. I wish we had something like that in New Zealand.

What an amazing centre - looks like you all had a great time. I totally respect and admire your openness about accepting psychological support to process your trauma and am so pleased that you have found somewhere that looks out for your needs too. It was ❤️ we had a phone call from them not long ago, we’d like to go for an overnight stay when they have space but they’re very popular and we wouldn’t want to take space from a family that needs it more. We had an overnight booked a few months ago but there was a family with an emergency that needed it.. totally understandable ❤️

When we refer to hospice we immediately think of the "dark" side but it's not only that. Someone said it very well "hospice is this one amazing place that's really beautiful, really wonderful but you really don't want to go there".

Yes exactly, we were so reluctant to go for months, we needed to experience it for ourselves to break the negative mindset and I’m really glad we did xx

Are you putting her in Hospice as opposed to caring for her at home? Is she at the end of her journey here on earth? Does she NEED hospice at this point as in she needs to have comfort care?

No not at all. The hospice also provides a place to spend time as a family as part of their service. They also provide respite and hospice care but that’s not all they do. They have lots of facilities for special needs families xx
