I remember riding on the 63 coach end of gala special. It was a VERY rapid departure from New Romney when a coupling failed and the front 8 coaches shot off like a bullet under Littlestone Road bridge before the drivers managed to stop! They backed up and reconnected to take the rest of the train with them on the 2nd attempt. A brilliant run then via Dungeness and back to Hythe. Many good memories in that video.

The locos from Liverpool that year all met again at the RHDR Gala in 2022! It took long enough for that to happen!!!

Does anybody know about the DMU at 2:20? Is it still with the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway or has it been scrapped/privately owned? Many Thanks.
@Hunter18ism5 жыл бұрын
Motors themselves I believe are scrapped or destroyed in the workshop fire if they were stored. The cars themselves were reduced to normal coaching stock with one or two being adapted for disabled use.

If they really wanted a red 482, then why didn’t the RHDR just send Hercules?
@DerekSmith19492 жыл бұрын
Hercules wasn't available and it was too dull a red. With Samson nearing its overhaul it was easier to paint bits of it red than to do a proper job on Hercules,
@johntcashdown13632 жыл бұрын
@@DerekSmith1949 ah ok thanks Derek. I remember buying a ticket on Hercules in 1981. Both that one and Northern Chief has not long come back from overhaul and they were still being worked back in

Are these steam engines manufactured today and where?
@DerekSmith19493 жыл бұрын
All of the RHDR locos were manufactured in the 1920s and 30s, but there are still manufacturers producing smaller passenger hauling steam locos. Companies like Maxitrak, Station Road Steam etc. There is also a market for second hand steam locos and there are several companies who buy and sell.

So, Simon Batten is the only man to have ever driven The Bug in Norfolk?
@DerekSmith19494 жыл бұрын
The booked driver was Richard Batten who let Simon have a drive on this trip. RCB drove it a couple of times I think during its short stay along with one or two of the then BVR drivers. It was found that it was not really able to keep up with the timings so its stay was very short.
@markharrington5084 жыл бұрын
@@DerekSmith1949 Thanks for your response. Not really surprising that the Bug didn't make the grade:; the bank out of Aylsham is a stiff test for many a loco and driver. If RCB decided it wasn't up to the job the that was the end of the matter!

@@markharrington508 Having bought Southern Maid out of Wroxham on a wet rail with a full set during one of the early galas I can do no more than agree about a challenge. I've driven the Bug on many occasions at Romney and it wasn't bad to drive but with a full set to Dungeness and back it was a constant battle to balance pressure and water level.

@@DillonTrinhProductions Film is that stuff with sproket holes down the sides - we tend to say I'm going to video something today if we are using video as the medium. As an ex broadcast TV cameraman I know that my fellow film cameramen would get very upset if I said I was filming a video. :-)
