Glad you did this for the rest of us. I’m heading to Da Nang this afternoon, looking to spend a couple of weeks. Hoi An looks pretty, but nothing more irritating than a tourist vibe over an extended period of time. I’ll check it out, maybe get a blazer made. Certainly beats Saigon.

So you’ll be moving to Hoi An next year Wayne? 😉 Those things at the end are Cyclos (Pedi Taxis) they used to be everywhere, now just a tourist thing. Theres also a fantastic movie called Cyclo which IMO is one of the best south east asian movies of all time. It's got some confronting scenes but that director is a wizard. Movies almost 30 years old now. 00:23:25 Bit of Arsh checking going on there...

I've only been to Hoi An a few times. During the high season, it was mayhem. Way too crowded and the touts were just way over the top. It was disappointing to be honest. I also visited in low season and it was awesome. It was around November if I recall.

It's a beautiful city but i agree with you. It reminded me of being in Disneyland or something at night. Like a tourist attraction. I guess it's good for the locals though, so that's a good thing.

Hoi An my 1st visit 1997, just into World Heritage Status! Perhaps Aug/Sept time of year. Major floods Hue + Hoi An. Hue Hung Vuong St, water levels mid thigh on me, I'm 6ft 1" + Hoi An flood levels water front were 3mtr high. Women rowing boats usually were 3 streets back. Rowing with difficulty on corners. Very Big currents on corners! I was Hoi An many times after, spent days watching the many derilict buildings being restored. A team women men a hand cart, sand tiles big lengths of timber, by days end a roof had been repaired, new tiles fitted. Set of stairs carved out of a large heavy length of wood! Life was quieter then in Hoi An, no or few noisy tourists, progress no just unfortunately the way the world is evolving! Vloging visitors, rushing to the next hit on their "Bucket List" I'm of an much older generation, slow travel is more appreciated, make limited contact/ chat with the locals. Purchase memories to have! I've sat down on a quiet street corner Hue, Hoi An, Ha Noi, HCMC. After a short time camera is taken out, I'd take photos of the noodle sellers, children playing football, the ball substitution is compacted newspaper tight string to keep it in place! Some months later, return same corner with photos, walk across the street, place on ground or give the photos out! Step back see the smiles, giggles of the children! Safe and enjoyable travel to you all, keep safe always, Sanity is Optional. 😊🎉😂

You got the idea now, Wayne. Arrive with no plans or expectations. As I've learned in previous travels, I can't judge a town in 2 hours. Paddy Doyle thought Da Nang was a disappointment after 48 hours. I'm happy you made it to Hoi An. There's a whole lot more to be discovered...on wheels Wayne.

That is where I met the N. Viet. vet who "worked" in Saigon. He operated a boat. We were there 3 days. I rode a bike across the river. More local viets there. And found a neat book store. Then got lost, of course. Wound up outside of town at the local Viet bus station. Got some strange looks and smiles. I wondered what would have happened if I took the next bus. Maybe still there? Anyway, you should spend about 3 days there with a real guide. Nice to just walk around. But you can miss some neat things. Anyway, I don't mind the scams. The only way some of the people can survive. Not much govt. help.

The town appears to have very nice architecture, not too much traffic, and big trees all around, so I can see why tourists find it a charming little place. Haha, you sound like such a tourist hater, saying they ruined the town. But I know what you mean. We all want to be the only tourist in a foreign city. It always feels less "foreign" and authentic when surrounded by other Westerners. Thanks for the tour.

I spent four nights in Hoi An in Feb and loved it. Sure, it is touristy, but the old part is stunning. As for coffee, in Vietnam, the coffee is excellent. One of the reasons that I loved Vietnam so much. Tea I drink about once a month. And then it is Rooibos because it has some taste. Never understood the English tea. Not my cup of haha.

I must admit, the Vietnamese coffee is so addictive. I don't drink coffee anymore but i had to start again while I'm here. Can't beat a nice cup of ENGLISH Teas mate, nothing beats that 🤣🤣🤣. Hoi An is a stunning place, good for a holiday i think. Thanks Peter.
