I went there a few year ago with some friends, we hired a local history guide (David Harper) he was fantastic, worth every penny. He collected us from the hotel and took us to all the local historic sights, he also had a folder with A5 photos of various people like Hitler, Eva Braun and other officials in some of the locations he took us to, he was a mine of information. From the bus park up at the Eagles Nest he pointed out where some of the scenes from The Sound of Music was filmed (they were in the distance but visible) He also asked what is the last thing you’d expect to see on top of a mountain? We didn’t have a clue, a submarine engine was the answer. A few yards to the right as you face the tunnel to the lift is a door which takes you into the room with the engine, it actually drives a generator. This was the standby backup generator. Of course he had contacts and got the key to take us in to show us. Another little detail the tunnel to the lift is the same length as the lift shaft is high. The photos he had showed Hitler on the sun terrace and Eve Braun walking down the path from the mountain top, the path you went along. We had an all day tour with David Harper which took us to loads of other sites including the site Hitlers house which wasn’t too far away. It was flattened at the end of the war, leaving just the retaining wall to keep the hillside from slipping down, but if you know where to look (and David did) you can find the exit of the escape tunnel. It seems most of the Nazi officials lived in the area, all but one of their houses were demolished, so we had a sneaky peek from the end of the drive at it. At the end of our tour David asked where we were off to, one of our destinations was Dachau. David told us if we went to the crematorium to look at the plaque on the wall about the women executed there, his aunts name Noorunissa Kahn is the third name down. She was a SOE spy and was awarded the George cross and an OBE. Very brave lady, and well worth looking up on google. On this trip we also went to Colditz and Stalag Luft 3 both well worth a visit. The Colditz glider wasn’t on the tour at the time, but as it was built by a friend that I used to work with (Tony Hoskins) so we managed to blag our way in for a visit to the glider in the loft where it was built. If you’re ever anywhere near these places I’d highly recommend a visit.

Just went to Eagles Nest. Beautiful. Unfortunately, we went on a very cloudy day so the views beneath were covered in clouds. Still, the views of the snow capped mountain tops were beautiful. Berchtesgaden is one of the prettiest towns I’ve ever been to! Your doggie running in circles was precious! Enjoyed your video!

I have photos and a book of post cards, when my parents used to holiday there in the late 1950s when my Dad was stationed at Ramstein. I would love to visit one day.

You're right, it's well worth a visit - whatever faults Adolf had he certainly knew a good view when he saw one! I concur that it's worth getting up early as I got there at ten o'clock after a two hour brisk walk up the old hairpin road from the main car park and it was already crowded with coach-party tourists. I used the same overnight parking as you which is a pleasant enough 'rustic' overflow car park at Klaushöhe just east of Obersalzberg.

Looks a great trip! We are currently planning a visit to the "Wolfs Lair" - Hitler's bunker complex in the north of Poland as and when covid restrictions allow. Can't wait to compare our experience to yours!

Thanks for sharing, you have some fantastic footage of the amazing views! We visited in 2016 and a great tip on getting there early, it does get super busy. The drive to the car park is stunning too... Another tip for anyone interested in the history - nearby you can also visit the area where the Berghof stood, it was destroyed after the war but the foundations are still there in woodlands, another good place to walk the dog, explore and catch some more amazing views 🐕 Thank you 😊

Great video thank you. When I went it was thick cloud and snow up top so vis wasn’t good. Interestingly Hitler was claustrophobic so they made inside of lift nice and shiny to calm him down. If I remember correctly there’s a museum of sorts at the bottom which is worth a look. Take care guys, love the bit with dog at the end, nutter lol

At the same site, entrance through the information office you can visit the ‘Dokumentation Obersalzburg’. If you are interested in the history this is fascinating. The underground bunker 15 m down, was to be the seat of the Nazi government if Berlin fell. Opened only in the mid 80’s it’s a historical gem with much info inc propaganda films.

Hi i love the vlogs i was watching one from three years ago about i quite my job and although you answered a lot of questions one i have is your husbands job although i would not be so rude to ask how much he earns i am interested to know what he does and how he does that whilst you are travelling look forward to your reply and Happy Wondering.

He does something very important to do with software... don't ask me what, I have no clue!! ;) As long as we have power and decent internet, he can do a lot whilst travelling, although he does need to return to the UK every now and then to chat with clients and deal with stuff.

Crazy how such a beautiful place was almost ruined by such an evil person.
@hencytjoe2 жыл бұрын
It was absolutely ruined by him, like really badly so. Re-built sure, but after the war Germany was in dust and ashes. It came down to the hard work of the German people to rebuilt yet again, after having their country leveled with the earth for the fourth time in 150 years.
