Visiting Leica HQ in Wetzlar, getting my M6 fixed + B&W slide film workshop (VLOG)

In this video I spend a day in Wetzlar at the Leica Headquarters. I attended the "vintage weekend"-event in Oktober 2021 which was packed with talks, workshops, gear specialists and of course a ton of awesome cameras. Apart from getting my Leica checked-up and adjusted, I also spend the day shooting learning black and white slide film development. For that I shot a roll of Adox Scala 50 in my Leica M6 paired up with my 15mm Voigtländer Super Wide Heliar.

Oh wow, a tuneup and a focus fix by Leica themselves is a phenomenal bonus! I too had too much fun popping that Redrum lid ... ha ha. Also, I love how the Leica buildings have rangefinders. :)

Karin!! These black and white photos were sooooooo cool. The wide angle lens really made these shots and compositions so much more interesting. The film was very smooth and clean! I typically enjoy grain but I really enjoyed your photos here! Making want to purchase a wide angle hahaha

Loved the M3 with the wide angle lense that had the goggles. Have that set up on my M3 that my dad got in Germany in the 1955. I also have an original Lietz 35mm film cassette. These are typical over engineered and is the reason for the camera's bottom plate twist lock. As you turn the lock the cassette is opened so the film is not scratched by the felt found in modern cassettes. Of course the cassette was brass and very expensive, just like M3. When I loaded bulk film I used a film loader to make it easy. In future please don't use animated text, us old people have hard time read it

Great video Karin! It was nice that Leica gave you a free ‘tune up’ of your M6, excellent customer service! I used to home process colour slide back when it was the older E4 process and you had to re-expose the film to light part way through the development process and you having to do this with the Scala 50 film reminded me of those days. I also loved your initial reaction to seeing your fully processed B&W slides coming out of the tank for the first time! Showing the B&W slide film along the video was a great way to show your shots. My favourite was the one of you taking your reflection in the giant mirror; I also enjoyed you doing the ‘Downward Karin’ yoga pose to get one of your images ;)

@@KarinMajoka I've already bought the kit of developer, finding the film is tough though. I ordered 2 rolls of Rollei Ortho 25 and two of Rollei Copex. Both are suitable for transparency, ie. clear base. One problem I am having is finding data for film other than Scala; time/temp info. Have you seen any other data? Please share if you have. Thanks again for producing great content, this episode was really good. And many of your pictures were very good.

Those b&w slides look amazing. I need to try that some days. Maybe you know it, but Bellini also produces a b&w reversal kit that is stress free from the step that requires you to expose the film to light, making it a bit easier compared to the Adox or Foma kits.

@@KarinMajoka Yes your "mixed feelings" at that moment was nice to watch :) Bellini is the italian unsung heroe of film chemistry. They even have a so-called liquid version of XTOL (so far so good for the few films I processed) and their C41 kit is amazing.

@@KarinMajoka Bellini makes a lot of interesting chemistry. Besides liquid Xtol, they also make liquid Diafine. Their b&w reversal kit is interesting, but unfortunately not very economical. Other reversal kits worth mentioning are the one made by Rollei (difficult to get nowadays) and the one called Roba Apposta (this one also works on black and white darkroom paper). If you're brave enough, you can also mix your own kit from raw chems according to Ilford's instructions (I'm not :P).

That film looks so good. I'm not sure if it's just the shade of the buidings you were photographing, but the midtones looked on the lighter side without loosing the darkness in the blacks. love it.

I totally agree, I feel like the film as a pretty impressive dynamic range for a slide film with really nice tonalities.

@@KarinMajoka The reversal process expands the dynamic range. I haven't got myself setup for it, but thought s good test would be to shoot a roll taking 3 shots of a subject, first a normal exposure, next expose for the shadows, next expose for the highlights, then process as a reversal. The best part would be scanning - not having to reverse reverse the image in post should make the process much easier.

The Voigtländer 15 is a cool lens! And it works very well with B/W on a M6. You use them well. Cool worskop :-) I hope I'll make a visit to weetzlar some day :-)

Finally managed to watch it, I don't like this vlogging style, I missed the cactus 😜 Nah just kidding, this was a very nice video. The Leica looks like a nice place to walk around, but I am afraid they will come after me with torches and pitchforks if I walk around with my Fujica GW690 aka Texas Leica 🙈 The pictures on the Scala have a beautiful contrast and are just very nice framed/composed. And I think I think a workshop from Lina is very cool, I adore her enthusiasm.

Ahh der Leitz Park. Ich war da mal vor Jahren als ich Leica noch als überteuerte Abzocke angesehen habe. Thanks for your comment :) And: No problem! Currently I am using a Sony ZV-1 for most of my videos purely because it is lightweight and compact. Sometimes I use a Sony A7II with a prime lens, but I get annoyed of carrying it around. For editing I am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro, I am dipping my toes into Final Cut Pro though.

I have the same ostrich skin titanium M6, which I bought in Beijing for an astronomical amount of money in 2008 or 2009, around $2500. It was second hand, and had a slight bent on the top plate, so I thought I was ripped off. I used the Voigtlander 35F1.4 lens with it, and it took phenomenal photos. I barely use it these days. But it’s good to learn something about it from your video. Maybe I’ll use it again when the weather here turns better in the spring

For today's standards 2,5k is probably considered a "good price" for a Titanium M6. But I totally understand why it felt like a fortune back in the days! Hope you get to use it some more again in the future :)

Oh snap, so sorry to hear that! This was not a full service by any means. They just did a check-up and adjusted the rangefinder. Still a lot for free - but probably not comparable to a full CLA. So having a proper service might still be worth it. :)

Lovely to see a video on the Scala 50. I remember seeing them as an Instagram story 😄 have you tried some more since? Also, the home of Leica looks awesome! Do you know if they do these kind of workshops regularly (as far as pandemics allow) or was that a one off?

I have ordered three more rolls of Scala 50 but did not have the chance to shoot and develop them yet. They sometimes host events at the Leica headquarters, but to be honest I do not know how regular they take place. The "vintage days" there take place every year though I guess? 🤔

The Adox BW slide films are great. There is another one which has 160 ASA, which is a bit better for handheld photography (not to speak of all the other great films in the Adox lineup).

Still need to try the 160 version! Adox is awesome, all the film stocks I have used so far have been extremely high quality

Nice view into the Leica HQs :) ...I wonder whether the reversal process (second exposure) couldn't be chemical like in a E6 process.

Good question, I would be interested to learn about that as well. The part of exposing it again is so much fun though that I don't mind not having a chemical process for that haha

I am surprised the instructor would have you shine the light directly onto the reel, especially when it was translucent. Re-exposure should be done with the reel remaining in the water, to achieve diffusion of the light and thus more even exposure. Only if a reel is not translucent should it be removed from the water, as the light can not effectively reach the film in this case, but re-exposure will be suboptimal still for the reason already explained.

Do you know if there are any labs in the USA that develop Scala film? Or any other b&w film into slides? If I have to buy a kit and develop Scala myself, do you have any info on that , as to cost, how many rolls per kit, etc? Thank you.

I am not from the US, so I have absolutely no clue. Black and White reversal development is not cheap: in Germany the Scala kit costs approx. 40€ which is sufficient to develop 8 rolls of film.

The M6 Titanium was produced starting from 1992, so it makes sense to check on the serial number to identify the precise year

Nice tour and what a beautiful camera :) (I own a titanium M6 as well - love it!) Was it just a one time thing that Leica offered a free inspection? It would be very cool to see this place one time along with a short checkup! :) Anyways, happy shooting!

Thanks for your comment :) I am not sure - to be honest I did not know this beforehand but also only found out they had the free check-up offer when I was there. I guess it's worth observing their website and keeping an eye open for new events there
