I know that Russia might look a bit shocking during springtime for foreigners, especially when you walking around our usual muddy commie-blocks. But seems like you already got used to it just like we automatically did ahah. Also, it's impossible not to mention this - but your half-brother shares a lot of friendly/smiley vibes as your birth father. Guess it's just in your genes. It's also good to see that you made a lot of Russian friends along the way from all the cities that you visited. And finally - great camera quality. Witnessing your journey brings so much joy.

Lovely people you have in Russia, and overnight trains are a good way to travel! Looks like you took first class since you were sharing a closed compartment. (My only problem with those was that they got so hot.) A little bit about pronunciation: when I first studied Russian, the Russian instructors used to tell us to memorize where the stress of a word was placed along with the spelling. It's easier to learn it in the beginning rather than trying to correct yourself later. Your brother's name in Russian is Артём. When a word has the letter [ё] in it, the stress is always always on that letter. So his name should be pronounced ar-TYOM with the stress on the second syllable. Your nephew Aleksei's (Алексей) name should also have the stress on the last syllable, so it would be pronounced a-lik-SAY. Finally, although Arkhangelsk comes from the word for archangel, the [a] sounds are all pronounced as "ah." The pronunciation is ahr-HAHN-gelsk. (Word to the wise: native speakers often refrain from correcting people learning their language. If they understand, it's good enough, even if it's very accented, so just keep listening to them and trying to imitate their speech.) Obviously, you are doing well if you absentmindedly spoke Russian with someone who spoke English. Опять молодец!

I looked up Arkhangelsk, Russia on my maps in Kindle. I have done some investigation into my family roots. I have ancestors in Norway and Sweeden and from what was Prussia and now part of Russia not far from Lithuania. I understand your feelings of being connected spiritually to the place of your birth. I have always been drawn to the ocean or lakes, love to fish, and would feel quite at home in Arkhangelsk! I have lived most of my life in Northern Wisconsin in the USA. This past winter we experienced a couple weeks of temperatures as low as -34C. I always say you know it's cold when you inhale and your nostrils stick together. Best wishes. I think your journey is guided by the archangels!
