Visiting spectacular 118 year old CACTUS & SUCCULENT NURSERY MATK, Berlin

Come and visit with me a cactus nursery that is absolutely awesome to see and experience if you are ever visiting the cool city of Berlin, Germany. Today's cactus nursery Kakteenkulturen Matk in Berlin's district of Lichtenrade, was started way back in 1906, so almost 120 years ago .... it has a huge and incredible selection of very healthy and rare plants for sale ... AND also has one of the most impressive PRIVATE COLLECTIONS of cacti & other succulent plants that I have ever seen on display! I think that after the visit there, you will agree with me that this private collection can easily compete, hands down, with most botanical garden succulent greenhouses around the world! And in total, there are also over 1,300 square meters (ca. 14,000 sq. ft.) of greenhouses filled with beautiful cacti & other succulent plants for sale to explore!
And what I also found super cool: this family-run nursery is now being run by the 4th generation of gardeners ... and there are some breath-taking cacti on display here that were grown from seed by the founding generation, over 100 years ago!

I can only imagine the responsibility of being the head gardener and caring for all of those old plants! And all the wisdom and knowledge being passed down through the years. They must have a lot of employees to keep that place looking so tidy. Oh, and I couldn't help noticing your new T-shirt which I like a lot! Hi Terry, the good news is that since it is a virtual, video trip, we can all go there as many times as we like, haha! I too could not get enough of it. Yes indeed, there is a huge amount of knowledge and experience being passed down the generations in that family and nursery! As far as I know it is still mainly the family members and only a very small crew of employees who run the entire nursery, truly admirable! The private collection is world class! I don’t know of any here in the US that is comparable to its diversity and age all in one roof! What amazes me is how clean and tidy it is. My garden is only 3 to 4 years old and everything is growing on top of each other. That private collection is immaculately clean… The sale area, I’ll go broke in there! … I’m sure you didn’t go home empty handed. I cannot wait to see your haul. 😊 Amazing trip and video, Joe!

Oh WOWSERS GALORE Joe :-D what a MAGNIFICENT tour of the AMAZING Helmut Matk Nursery, AWESOME and HUGE collection of very beautiful and mature specimens, those Golden barrels are the size of houses haha, and a huge and vast selection of so many stunning cacti and succulents for sale too, we visited Helmut Matk in 2018 and it was the most incredible place to visit, we bought our big Euphorbia 'Thai Giant' milli from there as a tiny cutting and its now 4 feet tall haha, what a truly AWESOME video Joe and thank you so much for sharing all the info and history on this amazing 118 year old Nursery, we want to go back again and we are so looking forward to seeing what you have bought haha, thanks so much for filming for us all to enjoy too Joe and thanks so much for sharing, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a brilliant Sunday XXXX

@cactusjoe I've never been there personally but I'd seen pictures of it and rarely have seen pieces of the clone for sale here in the states. It's in the private collection for sure, huge old stand
