Visiting the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth!

In this week's vlog, Mum and I fulfilled one of our dreams: visiting the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth. It was a magical experience to walk through the rooms once inhabited by the famous literary sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, and to see the table where classic novels such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were written. It was an unforgettable day, despite the rain (and Mum forgetting something rather important - see video!), and I hope you enjoy touring the museum with us. I definitely recommend visiting yourself if you're in the area. Have a lovely weekend!

I visited the place 45 years ago...one of my most precious visiting expériences ! I was a French assistante at the time and my friends took me there for a week-end. It is amazing how those children surounded by death , bereavement manager to muster their fantastic, endless imaginative power to write whag they did. My favourite novel is wuthering heights. Next time : I will rush with you and walk into the brontë’s footsteps😅. I am looking forward to it!

Hello Miranda, and thank you for your wonderful channel. I discovered it with this particular video while searching for views of the Bronte Parsonage. Although I have lived all of my 65 years in western Canada my favorite authors all come from the UK, with Barbara Pym, Ruth Rendell, and PD James being my favorites. But among my 4,000 books are many, many others including the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen. Like you, my late wife had a several versions of her favorite novels, all of which had some small thing to make it a necessary addition to the library. I loved watching you and your mom making a sponge cake, and your china collection would have impressed my father, who never had fewer than three fine cups and saucers at his table setting. Your chats and tours are everything I could ask for to watch while enjoying a pot of tea by my front window. As the snow gathers and the temperatures drop, I look forward to many more. Oops meant to say as a gardener my green thumb was twitching and for what its worth her is my advice: pop on a mulch around the plants of compost about 2 to 3 cms thick on the little strip garden and put some edging in to keep it moist and weed free. Water with a seaweed liquid fertiliser once a week and pop bunny guard around the prone vulnerable plants.

Thank you for this video✨✨✨ I last went to Haworth in 2017, it was real bliss... It was also a rainy day, though it was in July. Despite the weather, we enjoyed it so much! After visiting the parsonage we went to Tea Rooms, had tea and scones with the view of Yorkshire countryside...I miss it so much! We travelled there by retro train, it was also an amazing experience. I should say this day in Haworth was the highlight of our summer holidays in the UK. Wish to go back there one day🙏

I have been obsessed with the Brontes since I was a child and read a brief biography of their family. At 16 I bought a little replica of Bronte Parsonage. So when I travelled to the UK from Australia in 1999 it was my one absolute place I had to visit. I was so incredibly emotional while I was there. I watched this whole video with a big smile. It was delightful to watch your trip to Haworth and the rain only made it more atmospheric, if not great for walking about. You are so lucky to live in England where you have such incredible history and so many exquisite landmarks relatively close by. I love my country, Canada, but I do wish we had the gorgeous architecture and history you have closer to hand. Not to mention the country lanes. I live in western Canada, it has great beauty all its own, but I miss that certain coziness and the sense of the ancient which England has in spades. Lovely piece of film. With the Bronte's, what I like about them is you can travel back in time 200 years to Haworth and the parsonage and everything is so well preserved - it is so easy to suspend your disbelief. You can stand by the clock half way up the stairs and just imagine they have all stepped out for a moment...

Thank you for such a lovely video. It made me a little teary eyed watching it! I just love Haworth and the Brontës. I've been lucky enough to visit twice, but hope I can go again. Wuthering Heights is my favourite novel and my youngest daughter even has Emily as a middle name 😊. Next time you go you might be interested in finding the Brontë stones. Each stone has a poem on it. Anne's is just behind the parsonage in the little garden. I hope you're flower bed grows well too. Hopefully all this sun and rain we're having will help it along!

This was so delightful. Thank you for taking us along. The architecture is so beautiful, and the rainy backdrop so perfectly Bronte-esque. Seeing Charlotte's beautiful dress gave me goosebumps. I can't imagine writing a novel in such a busy room of the house. I would have been distracted early on, and Jane Eyre would still be hiding behind that red curtain.

And do you know, that the Brontes went to Bruxelles some years and that that Charlotte's experience there made her write Jane Eyre?? They have also guided tours through the Bruxelles of the Brontes. Something wich also is on my bucket list. very fascinating....

Yes, I only recently discovered the story of Charlotte's time in Brussels. I think that the man she fell in love with, Monsieur Heger, must have partly been the model for Mr. Rochester. He was dark-haired and imo very good-looking judging by a portrait of him with his wife and children that can be seen online. It must have helped Charlotte to be able to write the happy ending she couldn't have in life.

Love the Parsonage Museum - although last time we went we took our 18 month old which turned out to be a mistake 🙈 We had to make a speedy exit before she destroyed the place. If you’ve not seen it, I’d recommend the film To Walk Invisible, all about the lives of the Brontes and especially Bramwell and his alcoholism. It was all filmed in Haworth and at the Parsonage.

Thank you for taking us with you to Haworth. I remember visiting in the early nineties. It looks so cosy nowadays but I read that there were no carpets or window treatments because the sisters' father was so afraid of fires. So probably it did not look so nice and comfotable at the time.

Agreed! And old engravings and drawings of the parsonage and grounds as they looked at the time the Brontes lived there are a bit of a shock too -- no trees! It was quite a severe, barren-looking setting, no shade anywhere, everything quite exposed -- very different than today.

By the way...about the bunnies and the fennel...I use a liquid fence deer rabbit repellent to try and keep the deer out of my garden. It kind of works, I understand it's better with rabbits. I'm not sure if it's the same thing in the UK, but you may want to look into it. Have a great weekend!

Hi Miranda and Donna, a lovely Friday treat and I could really sense the atmosphere from your filming - I thought the sofa and Bramwell's room was very moving to see. It's been raining heavily here all day which added to the ambiance when watching! I’ve just watched this and it was really wonderful, thank you so much for taking us along with you! It must be fifteen years or so since I visited Haworth (also on a day of very heavy rain!) and I loved seeing it again in your video. I love the way some rooms are arranged as if they are still living there - you can imagine Charlotte has just left her writing desk - and seeing their personal belongings, like the clothes, it’s very touching and makes the family seem very real rather than remote historical figures. I hope your little garden flourishes despite the bunnies!

Lovely video! Thank you so much for taking us along to Howarth. It was one of the last places I visited with my mother. She passed away 12 years ago to the day. You filmed looking down the high street just where I took her photograph! While inside the parsonage, did you see the portrait of the sisters? It appeared briefly. Branwell painted it; originally including himself but he subsequently painted himself out! You probably read about it. I think it was folded and stored in a cupboard for a time, hence the fold marks! thank you so much ... it's been a number of years since I toured the museum and it was a delight to visit. I remember how teeny her dress was - she was so small! The situation with Branwell was very, very difficult. Hard to imagine what they had to go through to continue to live with him. Again, thanks so much - it was really wonderful to see the parsonage again. I loved the sisters' writings very much! I hope the village of Haworth was not hit too badly by covid -- there were some lovely stores there when I visited!

This brings back lovely memories of a visit in spring 2018 when the weather was not cheerful but there was no deluge! I had myself reading Bronte novels before we left Australia and I spied my cloth covered edition of Villette in the gift shop :) It was very busy when I visited I envy your quieter day to enjoy it more. Lovely to see your trip. Hope to get over there myself one day. Recently read Villette for the first time and it is now up there as one of my all time favourites. If you can find a bit of wire mesh (or some similar barrier that lets in light) to form a barrier around your new plants to let them get established, it will give them a chance! Otherwise, plants that the rabbits leave alone (in my experience!) so far include sedums, foxgloves, comfrey (great for bees) and mint which I think you've mentioned. Happy gardening!

Looks amazing! I always think about how strange it would be for them (or anyone with a preserved historical house) to know that decades or even centuries in the future people will be touring their home and possessions and how odd that would seem to them having lived a fairly mundane life. Like Emily Dickinson’s home for example. She wasn’t famous when she was alive and was a shut in, so I wonder what she’d think about her home being a museum now. They’d probably be beside themselves. I think you may need a little fencing around your plants for the rabbits. At least until they’re established.
