Steve, as a child in the early 60's, I remember my father putting Spike Jones records on an old victrola. Now there is a word you haven't heard in many decades. I still remember those goofy, silly songs Spike would sing, and my father laughing and singing along. You definitely brought back good memories with this one. 😊

I totally remember Spike on Dr. Demento! When I was first hired by the Postal Service, I worked in the plant sorting mail on a machine, one letter per second, on the night shift for years. What saved me and kept me (somewhat) sane was that we were allowed to wear headphones while sorting so I’d listen to Dr. Demento, Larry King, Art Bell and Jim Bohannen. This was forty years ago so audiobooks were not a thing. I would also listen to a lot of disco music to keep me awake.

From the late 30s on, Spike was huge!!! He was with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra, when they backed the original recording of Bing Crosby’s, “White Christmas.” Spike only went up from there. Tired of playing traditional music, and inspired by a pair of squeaky shoes during a rehearsal, he formed a group of musicians to play parodies. They would record those sessions for their wives to enjoy. One of those recordings found its way into the hands of an RCA executive and they were offered a recording contract. Spike went on to land his own radio and TV shows which lasted into the 60s. And culminated into us Boomers hearing his madcap music on the Dr. Demento show in the 70s. Throughout his career he worked with some of the biggest names in the industry: Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Frankie Lane, Burl Ives, Don Ameche, etc. Spike also appeared in movies, and on several variety shows. He died young, but left an indelible mark with his passion for music. He is sorely missed!!!

When my husband and I were dating during college ,he introduced me to Spike Jones' music. My husband is also a big Dr. Demento fan. I think of Spike Jones as musical comedy parody, very similar to Weird Al but more accoustically slapstick with all the sound effects. Great segment Steve and thanks for sharing.

Actually, Spike Jones inspired Peter Schiekele, a classically trained musician, who just died in January. Schiekele created the fictional persona of PDQ Bach and lampooned classical music into the 21st century in exactly the same way Spike Jones lampooned jazz. Now both of these comic music geniuses (along with Victor Borge) are making the angels laugh.

As a huge Weird Al fan, Al would always cite Spike Jones as an influence and that's what got me listening to him. He's got plenty of classics but sadly his name is somewhat forgotten. Der Fuehrer's Face is a great song, and if you haven't seen it - the Disney short In Nutzi Land where it was used is recommended. Thanks for sharing this one Steve!

I remember Dr D. He played some of the whackiest stuff on the radio. Steve if you ever listened to The Band "Up on Cripple Creek" They mention him. "Now me and my mate were back at the shack We had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings But I love to hear him talk" Barret Eugene Hansen, known professionally as Dr. Demento, is 83 years old now. BTW you might have two new gravesites to checkout next year. Richard Simmons who just turned 76 on July 12th passed away on July 13th. Have you been to Jack Lalanne's grave site?
