Also, @TechLead , America isn't racist at all. It's just a miserable place to live compared to the ethnically homogeneous nations. If a country can be both pleasant from ethnic homogeneity while still being tolerant and open to foreigners, then that country might be the best place for ex-pats.

TechLead, you know where you can go if you want to find a place with happiness? It is Taiwan. Taipei is a bit more complicated because it is like the US a little bit. But many places in Taiwan, you talk to people and they care. They want to live a life they can respect themselves for, and that they live life by living life itself (meaning they enjoy it), as opposed to everything about money in the US

the reason America is ranked 16 (or maybe 19) in happiness is a direct result of the media Americans consume: internet, television, social media, talk shows, podcast, magazines, etc. It all ruins the mind. Good for you Techlead for exploring nature and finding a way out.

As an unhappy migrated SW engineer living in Sweden for many years I should confirm a couple of things. Life in Nordic countries is pretty depressing not particularly due to weather but I'm afraid to say due to pretty cold unsocial people. You can literally live in a neighborhood for years without having chance to say hi to your neighbor. Never felt home but also never found another better place to move to. Considered moving to US multiple times but reading stories about getting fired in a single day was so terrifying for me. At least I feel secure here job wise. Big dillema. Btw, west Norway's nature is a different beast. Hands down!

"Right to work" (employee or employer can terminate employment for any or no reason) is a big thing in most states in the US, but makes it easier to find work, and changing companies is how most developers can increase their salaries dramatically anyways. The added bonus is that you can increase your tech stack by switching jobs every couple of years.

If bad weather isn't too much of a problem, I would suggest Scotland. Very friendly people, there are big-ish cities like Glasgow where you can work or work remote, which is only a half an hours drive from the countryside, or if fully remote then just work on the city outskirts where you can either go up mountains and be in nature, and at the same time, travel a short distance to the cities if you need too. But for me, it's definitely about being surrounded with amazing people which you can find in Glasgow.

When I was younger and more immature, I was very proud of being a Canadian. Now, older and wiser, I pity those who hold so strongly to their "origin" and "roots." The question of "where you're from" is restrictive and elicits only an answer of "originally from." But I'm not at all like I was when I was a year old. I've changed from living in Canada, America, and Taiwan, and from travelling to over 25 countries around the world. So, I too am from around the world. My identity isn't limited to one nation, which, really, has almost no loyalty to its citizens as individuals. In life, we are where we go and what we experience, not where we crawled on all fours

In the past when I used to travel (rather too old now) I was sometimes asked where I was from and always it was a kind enquiry that led to interesting conversations such as being asked 'do you get nice cheese in your region'? etc. However, I never ask people where they are from and I understand your point. But my experience of being asked where I am from is not a negative experience.

I've been thinking about travel lately as well. Why travel solo? What is it that I want to experience? I think that contrary to you I do care about the history, the cultures, the stories and narratives people tell about their places. But I don't feel like just going around like a tourist would bring me that, so if I were to travel solo, I'd have to settle for what you shared. I'm not sure to what extent being a tourist really shows you how others live/what's a different way of life. I've been thinking that what I really want is to travel to someone, to have a "way in", a window into somewhere else, I don't want to stumble somewhere, I want to get introduced. But I don't feel like I've any connections like that or like i'm making them anytime soon.
@formica.
@formica. Жыл бұрын
"Introducing yourself" is exploring, stumbling is part of learning. There is living somewhere long term. There is travel during short vacations. Then there is slow travel, going somewhere for a month, three months, a year, then moving on. Long enough to get a furnished apartment (much cheaper than a hotel), time to settle in, find your way around, make friends with local and foreigners, absorb and learn. FYI Vagabond Awake has tons of videos about that.

Great message in this video. I think anyone who has gone through a tough situation or had any kind of internal awakening eventually ends up with this same conclusion. We value the wrong things here in America it will always come back down to “quality of life over quantity” and “surrounding ourselves with good people” and “time is the one thing we’ll never have enough of or get back.” Focus on what is important. I think the tech industry is a lead contributor in helping us see these things more quickly than we would had we not worked in tech, due to the burn out effect. It really has us contemplating what’s important earlier on than a lot of other career paths/industries. Beautiful scenery in this video too. Thanks!

At least Finns complain all the time about everything and nothing, and many are openly depressed. Happiness is not the correct term in these surveys, contentment is better. It's not about feeling like you're on top of the world 24/7, it's about not having to worry about basic stuff like street safety, becoming homeless or becoming bankrupt if you call an ambulance. Better work-life balance and a culture where spending time in nature & outside in general is more common, probably plays a major role too.

And the way you understanding it has more to do with you than the other person. the way you react says everything about you. Taking things personally... do you have to? You pride yourself on being different from everyone else. Always wanting to stand out, be a trend setter. I have a lot of work to do, backing up my movie collection + building furniture (or trying). Making a video game from scratch... a lot of things with no training. The one thing you and I have in common is drive. Maybe disappointment having been betrayed too. You're obviously pro-active. You're always looking for solutions rather than creating problems. So of course hatred doesn't fit in your life. Why people hate? Because they don't have the mindset to look for solutions like you do. They feel stuck, and that someone else is denying them their dignity, their freedom, their prosperity. I agree with you that what you're trying to share, the spirit of it is mostly lost in translation. Because what this trip means for you, at a time when you want to redefine your life, it's personal. The human condition is that we are born and die alone in the way we experience these things. We can try to connect with others, but our differences make it impossible. Differences... speaking the same language, having the same sense of style, the same approach to living, music and taste in foods, it relieves us of a kind of burden. We tolerate differences that conflict with our sensibilities. Maybe we love some differences. But you'll notice that comfort is found in the familiar. Like... family. Like places we know well. And food we remember. Why do people hate? Why are you divorced? Why am I alone? Why? You're considering your options at this stage in your life. You're limited by who you are as much as what's in your wallet. Your choices... Anyway, it's unfortunate that I can watch your videos and not be able to have a conversation with you. Also that most comments are superficial and most of what people offer is the same. I'll just use this as a way to question myself about the direction I'm taking. And remind myself that I have choices to make. So thanks for the introspection.

My ancestors are from Norway and I still have family that I am connected to there. I can say this, northern Europe is the way it is because of the people that have lived there for thousands of years. The people are what makes it beautiful because they are stewards. Once you change its inhabitants and replace them with 3rd world migrants, its beauty and happiness will cease to exist. You can see Stockholm’s crime rates as an example. It is not the Native Swedes who are committing the mass of crimes. Respect the local population and their natural beauty! That goes for every nation with strong cultural heritage.

My first study abroad and trip abroad was in Scandinavia. Sure, I stopped in London on the way there and it was awesome but after living in Copenhagen for 4 months and traveling throughout Finland, Sweden, and Norway, I forgot wanting or needing to go home. Came home and had reverse culture shock. Sat on a bench for a few weeks every day just staring out into space. Going through my memories and wondering what life would be life living abroad indefinitely.

You're awesome, TechLead. If I were to go to Japan, I don't think I would let any thoughts against my acceptance of my own genetics, tribe and culture affect me very much. They do hold to homogeneity nevertheless, and every nation should do that. If a nation doesn't, it turns to a Babel as America has done.

If America was homogenous it would be mestizo like Latin America, but Europeans slaughtered them all. USA being homogenous doesn't make any sense other than white supremacy and african slavery because the founders of USA are immigrants from all over Europe. Japanese aren't homogenous, they're one of the most accepting people in the world like all Asian countries, there's just a strong language barrier. In fact, they are too accepting of white people who don't even behave respectfully in Japan.
