In the lift up, the image they flashed of a ghost twin tower was just haunting. You get a real perspective of the height that some people made the heart breaking decision to jump from. It's just haunting. The building is beautiful but that was a split second real reminder of how it should never of been built, if not for that horrific day.
@velvetrashx98506 жыл бұрын
Victoria Pyke I thought the same. Although the view was beautiful all the time, I could not stop thinking about the people who jumped from this height- even if it was lower, this is so unbelievably high. Heartbreaking.
@triple7marc6 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t really a ghost, since the elevator is like traveling forward through time. Shawn wasn’t filming the center of the screen, but there are other videos of it where it shows New York City developing, with taller buildings being built around it, as well as the current year. The twin tower showed up in 1973 and disappeared in 2001 when it was destroyed.

It's strange, despite being slightly taller, the new WTC just doesn't have the visual impact of the originals. ... The Twin Towers genuinely looked MASSIVE in pictures AND in real life. I visited the original WTC in December 1998 ... and going to the outdoor observation deck was an incredible experience, because you were actually standing on the very TOP of the building ... something you rarely get now. It was dark by the time we got up there, and you could walk around to each side of the building on a raised square walkway.The bright red flashing warning lights that you see at the top of buildings were on poles that you could actually touch, and there were small benches you could sit on and just quietly look out across Manhattan. I even smoked a cigarette up there! ... Was VERY cold and windy, but worth every second. I remember thinking I would return to the top of that building several more times throughout my life ... but 9/11 changed all that.
@arthuronuorah54665 жыл бұрын
The old wtc was like you said obviously better. One thing I liked was that it had a better entrance and a better plaza than the modern one.
@tennisguyky5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Probably because the twins were boxy all the way to the top and this made them appear larger and also, visually, being twins, they complimented each other and made the eye think they were taller. And, because they were offset from each other, no matter where you were, in one direction one would appear taller than the other, making them iconic. If One WTC had a twin, the effect would be similar.
@tennisguyky5 жыл бұрын
I visited them in 1993 and it’s impossible to articulate how massive they were in person. And very very windy!
@AmieB20055 жыл бұрын
@@KA-md6je I don't mind them being boxy. There was something imposing about them that I miss. The new one tries too much to attract attention. The originals demanded attention naturally. I remember thinking how beautiful the twins were in that scene in Saturday Night Fever in 1977. Sure, they were ugly, but that's what made them beautiful, and it made New York City what it was.

As a native I was atop the WTC, on the open air roof in the early 80s, when I still lived there as a young teen. The view brings back those memories. Thanks for making this video so I could relive that view. All I think about when I see moments like 19:17 is 'this is the last view the victims had before they jumped, or didn't.' I think many NYers like myself will never visit this building for this reason, too sad and painful, so we leave it for tourists as it should be. I visited last in 2006 when it was a hole in the ground, a busy hole, but a hole none the less. I don't want to see broken trucks, scarred remains, too much for me now. I also notice NYC has a lot of really tall skinny buildings under construction, I've seen the asking prices for these places, and like the Freedom Tower itself you could not pay me! One thing that I did enjoy was the frightening elevator ride down, wow! Also driving in NY isn't bad because of traffic, maybe it's the same as the M 5 (?) , it's bad because everyone drives really fast like madmen! I was startled by this the times I drove in later in life. Cheers.

Thank you Shawn for the wonderful video of One World Trade ! Really appreciate what you do. The carousel you mentioned is from my home town of Youngstown, Ohio and was in an amusement park called Idora Park founded in 1899. It closed in 1984. It was every adult and child's ride and was a part of everyones childhood and adult hood. The organ music was amazing to hear. A New York lady named Jane bought it at the auction and brought it to New York - it took her many many years to carefully restore it and when competed the beautiful building housed it and thanks to Jane is enjoyed to this day by thousands of visitors. The carousel was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Co. around 1912.

I remember being in favor, personally, of their rebuilding total replicates of the original towers...with requisite upgrades, of course, to make the buildings safer for evacuation in the event of future disasters. This preference was based on my having lived in Israel during the "Second Intifada," in which buses, cafes, and pubs were bombed nearly every day. Israel's ethos was to restore each of these bombed locations to their exact former appearance, in order to broadcast two messages: 1) to the bombers, "we will not allow you to change the land/cityscape," and 2) to citizens, "we will not let the terrorists change our routine and way of life." This policy went far, in my opinion, toward the healing process. Sometimes cafes were up and running again only 2-3 days after having been seemingly destroyed. It never ceased to amaze me.

The bridge right next to the Brooklyn Bridge is the Manhattan Bridge. There's a joke that goes around to help you remember the three bridges that go from Manhattan to Brooklyn and vice versa. It's B.M.W (Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg). The Carousel is Jane's Carousel and Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the best places to get pics of the skyline. @@TakersSoulGirl22 if you look at it structurally, yes this one is taller. But that's because of the massive Spire it has. The highest floor on the old WTC was higher up than this.

The sphere behind you at 1:59 was located in the centre of the old WTC plaza which was located on/to the side of where the museum is now. It survived the collapse of the towers.

Once it gets a little bit easier to travel (and once I have enough money too 😂), I’d love to go to New York and now this is on the checklist! Thanks for the video!

This is a great video. Whenever I am physically on a high point anywhere, like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, my knees kinda feel like jelly from the height. I swear looking at this when you are filming out the window, looking down, that feeling hits my knees. Very realistic, like I'm there!

This was a most fantastic journey with you, Sean, finding your video by pure accident. You give wonderful explanations and fabulous camera work , with great zooms. Being a native New Yorker, who has been on the grounds of the World Trade Center, through the Oculus, but with many physical limitations, I really, truly enjoyed all your observations ever so much. Love your commentaries, absolutely great work! Bravo!! And thank you! 👏🏽💕💓

Excellent video. Makes me wanna go see this new building. I’ve been reluctant to go only because i loved and visited the original buildings. But this looks really amazing. I will go with my daughters since they didn’t get to visit the old ones. Thanks for sharing.

Just a little heads up: when you travel to the city in the late spring and early summer (April - early July), the building is loaded with people at the top; all that open space you see in this video is filled with people. There is still walking space, but just a LOT more people than what you see here. Many, many school groups and of course many summer travelers travel to the city from across the country and the world at that time of year. Also, if it is stormy at all (which summer storms are fairly common), the top of the building may be IN the clouds and you will not see much of anything. So, check your weather sources to make sure you go up that building on a fairly clear or clear day.

@27:36 I just visited Manhattan those 3 super tall condo/apartment buildings just south of Central Park are all completed now. As skinny as those buildings are they must sway a crazy amount. I don’t know how anyone could stand it during a thunderstorm. You’d have to be crazy to buy one of those penthouses for $100m+.

I was at the Top of World Trade Center with My Mom and Aunt Sept 2000. To this day, I cannot believe their gone. Mom lived in Greenwich Village when it happened. 1.5 mi from WTCs. She caught a glimpse of the plane flying low over the Hudson when peeking over the balcony to look down the street towards the Hudson. A relative living on New Jersey side of hudson, watched the planes hit from his office building.

I really liked your narration all through. Thank you for not using any musical overdub. At about 1:58 you were walking next to an important 911 artifact. "The Sphere" is a 25-foot (7.6 m) high, cast bronze sculpture by German artist Fritz Koenig. It is currently located in Liberty Park at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Originally located at the Austin J. Tobin Plaza, the centerpiece survived the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The Sphere was recovered from the rubble and dismantled and stored. The Sphere was relocated to a temporary location in Battery Park, where in unrestored condition it was re-dedicated (Sept11/2002) with an eternal flame. (Wikipedia)
