We visit the Union Pacific Roundhouse in Cheyenne Wyoming to see the Heritage Fleet of Steam Locomotives including the worlds largest steam locomotive, the Big Boy, the Challenger, and Northern 844. The Union Pacific fleet also includes 5 diesel locomotives including the worlds largest diesel locomotive.
*****************************************************************
From the UP Web Site:
No other railroad in this country has retained its historical equipment and honored its past like Union Pacific. The preservation of its fleet speaks to the high value Union Pacific places on its heritage and its role in America's history.
No. 844, the Living Legend, returned to service in 2016 to pull the Cheyenne Frontier Days special and then journeyed to Memphis for the grand opening of Big River Crossing! Meanwhile, work continues to restore the Big Boy, No. 4014.
Union Pacific Railroad is undertaking the movement and restoration of one of the world’s largest steam locomotives - the Big Boy No. 4014. The locomotive is expected to move in Spring 2014 from Colton, Calif., to Cheyenne, Wyo., where it will undergo restoration that is anticipated to take three to five years.

So amazing to see the progress being made on the Big Boy! I believe we all are beginning to feel like the expectant parents waiting for the rebirth of this amazing machine. I loved touring the round house, and looking at all of the other projects that are currently underway. Quite a fascinating trip! :D

It's a dream come true to see a Big Boy being refurbished for many years of use. And it's not just a quickie to get it to operational for a short period of time. Rail Fans can't thank Union Pacific enough for their commitment to not just preserve the steam locomotives, but to keep them operational for many years to come. I hold a very high respect for UP. And that's for more than their steam heritage program. Keep the great videos coming Toy Man! They inspired me to take my wife to the Strasburg Railroad, Pennsylvania RR Museum, B+O RR Museum, Virginia Museum of Transportation, the O. Winston Link Museum and the Age of Steam Round House, all in the past 2 years, I've been able to convert her to a steam rail fan and enthusiast. If her enthusiasm continues to grow, I'll have no difficulty justifying the expenditure to travel out west and see many of steam locomotives and railroads I've been a fan of for many years :-) Gee, should have thought of this years ago. Looking forward to new updates from you on 4014. Thanks again!

Great vid Dale. I have a VHS tape of the Challenger when it came to Ontario Ca way back when Filmed it on Cajon . When 4014 was at the Rail Giants in Pomona one could actually climb into the boiler . I made a comment to a volunteer saying wouldn't be nice to see it run again. At that time it was a fantasy. Now, can't wait to see come back.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 7 жыл бұрын
David Tucker for years people kept saying that that was one that could run again. All sorts of talk about 4014 being back on the rails. No one ever took that stuff seriously but it was fun to fantasize. Go figure

In aircraft lingo, the parts locomotive would be called a "Hanger Queen," always needing one more part to get it airborne, until another part gets scavenged to keep another plane flying. I guess it would be a "Shop Queen" or "Roundhouse Queen." Kind of like the guy with two or three Plymouth Super Bees/Dodge Daytonas sitting in his yard, gradually becoming one with Mother Earth. When asked if he'd consider selling one or all, he replies, "No, I'm gonna restore one of them one of these days." The fact that he's been saying that for the past 20 years, and he's now 75 years old doesn't matter. "One of these days... " "Happy talk keep talking happy talk, Talk about things you're going to do..." -- From South Pacific

tom7601 isn't it amazing how many people are like that, I understand their vision everyone wants to restore the pile of rust out in the yard, but so often those things just sit there and until they are utterly destroyed

Great video. I'm with you the E units are what I think of when you diesel locomotive. I grew up in Blaine Washington in the 60s and 70s and Great Northern's main line ran along the north shore of Drayton Harbor to the Canadian Border. So now and then I would go down the street and watch the trains... we were two blocks from the bluff that over looked the tracks and the harbor. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Kriss
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 6 жыл бұрын
Kriss Femmpaws we too love those. A GP7 is the same age yet looks (to my eye) like any modern diesel. As I look at my models they are all steam, about 100 of those, E and F and the like, about 30 of those and one GP 7 in O scale. WP paint and cool. Never been out of the box though. Hum.

Railroading can be an expensive hobby... But enjoying them for their engineering and beauty doesn't cost a lot... Most of the time. When I hit my mid teens I got into aviation and kinda put railroading on the back shelf... I still enjoy the history and all of that that comes with it. Many times you have to stop and ask yourself how did they do that! You have to wonder how much knowledge has been lost with the "progress" we have seen. A case in point, a group was restoring a Messerschmitt Bf 109 and sent the engine to Rolls Royce. Rolls told them "What ever you do, don't break the crank! Because we can't make another we don't know how." The 109s engine is a copy of the Rolls Royce Merlin that's been turned up side down.

I am with you, for a diesel locomotive, the E, and I am going to add, the F units are what a diesel should look like. They just have the impression of moving, even when standing still. Simply the most beautiful of all diesels, imo. Fantastic screwing around. Always look forward Dale, to yours and Karyn's adventures. Each video is always a treat. Never boring!!!! :)

rohnerw thanks! As a kid I had a chance to go for a ride in an F9, my uncle worked for Penn Central and when he would show up in Salt Lake the UP people or even the Rio Grande people showed courtesy to other railroad people and someone showing up with the nephew could get away with just about anything. Was truly amazing to see the inner workings of those F units! I've just never cared that much for the open walkway diesels they all sort of look the same to me, but ho man the streamliners!

Toy Man Television : BORING ? Are you kiddin' us ? Amongst all the train channels that I've seen on KZbin, YOURS, is the most PROFESSIONALY , produced. All the great entertaining narrations, the music, Plus...... So that's what that diesel model is called.....The "E" Series. She's so pretty, unlike today's locomotives. I tried over, and over, to find out more about THIS particular Deasil locomotive, on KZbin, but to no avail, 'cause I didn't know the particular model's name. Well, you good folks, have finally solved the MYSTERY for me. I accidentally ran across your channel while researching "steam" locomotives, of long ago. AND BOY I AM SURE GLAD I FOUND YOU ! I am looking forward to more notifications.🚂. P.S. Just an as side. Brave souls are you both ! O.K. see yas on the next go round . BE WELL !

In our state, those 18 wheelers love to cruise right in the center lanes on the freeway... and not the same speed as the rest of the traffic... Like "What's with that?" So.... this creates a situation where other vehicles are trying to pass them on the left, and the right! Then... without too much warning... the semi will just want to change lanes! Every once in a while.. I feel just like a soccer ball! At least in Wyoming.. those 18 wheelers keep to the right! We really do have a lot of fun making these videos, and very happy that folks are enjoying them. Take care, and thanks for watching! :D

In reading your comments you guys HAVE been busy. Loved this episode all to heck. There are other You Tube focusses on the Big Boy. You two give us just the right amount of glitz with your ALWAYS excellent editing and narration. Always enjoy my Sunday morning with Dale and Karyn. This weekend we are privy to the air show of the Winged Warrior's Project. In the morning then the evening hours we get strafed about every hour by a restored, vintage B-17. How cool is that? Sometimes the B-24 joins them with the two fighter planes for the evening salute. I believe that is what the program is called. If you are a vet of WW11, and flew one of these machines you are allowed a tribute ride, free, I believe. I would guess that's if health will allow. My own Dad would of been 100, earlier this year. A vet of Pearl Harbor, 1941. Continue your, "Massive effort of Screwing Around" Jeanne and I are enjoying this series. My Bride puts up with my trains but you folks make it breath and live. You know I think it might help to know your back story, what got you started in what ever industry to make films and in a chronological order. You present so well and edit videos like you have been doing this for years. I found you because of the 4014, it was parked in front of a Sunkist engine that my Grandpa had once riden to LA back and forth from the packing house, he and dad and I all climbed aboard the UP 4014 at the fairgrounds and commented to me that she'd never run again. It tickles me to no end that she is being restored. So please do a story of your History in films!

I loved seeing 5511 in their shops! Personally, I would love to see that engine in a museum on public display, as it's my favorite UP machine, and they don't seem to be doing much with it. If they do use it for something, such as (relatively slow) mainline trains, that would be fun! Great shots too, and the narration is great.

RockyRailroad Animation it seems that that is their goal for that locomotive, I suppose there's a good deal of debating going on behind the scenes, but no one seems to have a mind to run it again. But if a major museum wanted to display it and take really good care of it, they'd have them selves a locomotive

@@ToyManTelevision I have an unfortunate update from Ed. This was only leaked this year even though supposedly this was a rumor all these years until confirmed in May. This is what Ed said,“Hello friends. A quick update regarding the UP 3985. Information has been released as far back as May of this year regarding its current status...Which is…officially retired. As mentioned during that time there are no plans to restore the UP 3985. Having fired and operated that locomotive many, many thousands of miles this is not the news that you or I want to hear. But I feel most understands having two steam locomotives on the roster has historically been the norm of the Union Pacic. This is still the case. As time permits we may release additional information on exactly why that locomotive has not operated since 2010. Many years of hard operation has resulted in the locomotive requiring a complete frame up restoration just as the big boy received. Thank you friends, Ed.”

Hi, I’m going to be visiting Denver and Cheyenne (from Australia, en route by train from San Francisco to Chicago) next May and wondered how I might arrange a visit to the UP roundhouse, if that’s at all possible. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a child (I’m 66 now and not getting any younger). Btw, always love to catch your latest KZbin videos. Hope you can help, regards, Richard.

Almost impossible by working with the UP. Go the one of the clubs, they volunteer there and have open houses like once a month. And could perhaps just walk in.. Look up the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club. shermanhillrails.org/ Or go to the Cheyenne visitors site. www.cheyenne.org/listing/union-pacific-steam-shop-tours/1223/

What Ed said here, “Hello friends. But I feel most understands having two steam locomotives on the roster has historically been the norm of the Union Pacific. This is still the case. Hi. Yup it’s been a long road. But 6 years ago when 3985 was in need of a standard inspection and rebuilding they found a lot wrong. Big problem was leaking between two of the boiler sections. A proper rebuilding would cost about 4 million. Give or take. But the plan at that time was go for it. But the obvious question cane up, wouldn’t that be cheeper to just get a different locomotive? Like a Big Boy!!? And the answer was yes. Much cheaper. And so they went looking. At the time 3985 was still listed as being rebuilt. Even though it was obvious 4014 was going to replace 3985. I guess UP didn’t see any reason to retire 3985 at the time. But... so about 2 years ago they rethought the 3985 rebuild. I assume they didn’t want a big announcement about that until 4014 was finished. But the actual retirement was about 6 months before the May 10 events.

@@ToyManTelevision Hello thank you for responding to me. Keep up the great family friendly, fun content. When Ed say back in 2015 Union Pacific bought all of these tooling and parts for the 844, 4014, 3985 and even a spare set. What I do not understand is that why did UP spend money on tooling and parts for the 3985 if they were planning on to retire it? Plus of course everyone has a budget. However weren't they planning to restore the 3985 anyway after the Big Boy. I understand everything costs something. However for how they take their time on projects won't UP spread the money out on their budget per year since they can only restore one locmoitve at at time and they can run no more than two at a time? The suppose plan I heard was to have two operating locomotives avail be while another one is being restored. So why didn't Ed and UP as an organization announce to the public on the UP website or Steam club page about 3985 being retired. Yet why did Ed leak it only to his friends on his personal Facebook page back in January? Plus no one knew about it last year until January of this year. Thank you and God bless you!

@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision Жыл бұрын
I buy those tracks from Smartsound. I really like them because I can change them so easily. They’re broken out by measure and by phrase. Moreover of the recorded instrument by instrument. So I can put in a six measure phrase of one part of the music take out the drums turn up the volume on the bass and then add three measures at the end to cause it to end exactly where I want it to. It’s genius! But the music itself is based on classical pieces of music and popular music reworked into something that sounds familiar but is not a violation of copyright

Are they actually going to restore the UP 3985?
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. Well not in the foreseeable future anyway. The truth of the matter is that when 3985 came up for rebuild it was determined that it would cost an awful lot to do it and they could actually restore a Big boy for less. And that started them looking for a restorable big boy. So really 4014 as a replacement for 3985. 3985 has some issues and it’s Boiler vessel. And on a boiler that size those are not insignificant problems. Anyway never say never. Anything can be restored! So perhaps someday!

Jack Chatfield I think that in time many many locomotives will be restored, because there’s only so many of them and every year they are more and more people wanting to get involved with restoration of them. I’ll bet we do see good things happen with 5511. Not soon, but at some point. And if someone wants to get a go fund me thing going, after 3985 is restored they may be willing to return it to the high iron. But I’ll be surprised if 15 years from now it’s still in the roundhouse. But you never know.

We’ll sort of. Never say never.. but it costs about 3 million to restore one of these. They were planning to rebuild the 3985 but for less they realized they could restore a Big Boy. The goal being to get back to two locomotives. In reality as long as 844 is running that’s all corporate wants. But the rail fans wanted to see 3985 back and they didn’t want bad blood over that. But adding more locomotives? We’ll never say never. But not any time soon.
