I'm Locomotive Engineer and get to run steam on a regular bases. Our locomotives aren't nearly as long as a Big Boy and I find it difficult to see around the boiler, so I have to rely on my fireman's eyes especially on curves to the left. With the Big Boys extra long boiler the Engineer would have had to rely even more on his Fireman for left side visuals. Would love to get my hand on the throttle when they get the 4014 running.

I grew up with big locomotives running through my back yard in Boston. I’d stand on the fence and wave. Could really touch it if I reached out. But we kids weren’t that dumb. Had a train running through my back yard in Safety Harbor, Florida. Although I moved, there is a track about a mile from me and I can hear the trains late at night.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I ever saw one of those things running. If I did I was very young and it just didn’t make an impression I guess. I want to told my uncle that I wanted to see a steam locomotive running and he said oh you’ve seen that 1 million times! And I said no I haven’t and he said well I guess they’re not around much anymore but trust me you’ve seen them. So I assume I did I just can’t remember it darn it

I will be in my mid 30s when #4014 and I hope to share this moment with my grandfather because when i was younger he would always praise the BigBoy and i never knew the engine until i saw old videos of it :-)

My Dad road behind UP4005 on a troop train during ww2. The conductor took any of the soldiers that were interested up to see that locomotive that now lives in Denver. My dad bought a first generation Max Grey O scale Big Boy #UP4005. So I have watched it run since my childhood. He never thought that the Big Boys would never run again. He passed in 1999. He did chase 3985 and 844 around a lot in his life, so I related to your video in so many ways. Why did it take me almost 3 years to find these videos of yours???

Got to see a few Big Boys pulling freights through in central Nebraska, when I was a young boy. Not many because they didn't need to be used on the flat lands there, but when they did, dad told me and my grandma lived on Front Street, so a visit to her served a dual purpose. If I get to see a steam 4000 again, pulling an honest load by itself, I guess it'd be time to say, "Thanks Lord", and just go on out of here.

Oh man, that is SO awesome! UP, I see what you did there! :P UP really is a cool railroad! Love their restoration and heritage units. That's how you keep the public looking at you favorably. I'm starting an N scale model railroad after years being away from the hobby. I'm modeling primarily DME (Dakota, Minnesota, & Eastern), with some ICE (Iowa, Chicago, & Eastern, DME's sister railroad), CNW (Chicago & Northwestern, the railroad where DME and ICE's lines came from), and Rock Island. Basically, I'm modeling fallen flags that I grew up seeing, but not in their times... I'm modeling them as if they were still around today, as if the bankruptcies, sales, and mega-mergers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s had never happened. There will be no BNSF, no CSX on my inter-railway connections. UP will just be UP. There will be some inter-rail Chessie System, some Burlington Northern, Canadian Pacific, and yeah... UP will be there. Though the big mergers killed a lot of classic road names, UP is more or less a classic, and I'll let their stock roll on my rails.

+Toy Man Television Yes, I believe the color the Scotsman is in at the moment is called British Rail Brunswik Green however her original color was London North Eastern Railways (LNER) Apple Green; she was for a brief time painted in British Rail Express Blue and she was only ever black during the Second World War, presumably so she was less visible to Nazi planes and bombing etc. And yes, I agree those early 4-4-0s were far more colorful!

While I was never privileged to ride being pulled by the 1401 itself but I do remember the porters, and the staff always talking about her. @ToyManTelevision7 жыл бұрын
YES!! It's actually 4014, same number as the Big Boy. When the Big Boy is ready they will need to change that Or some workaround. Thats why 844 was 8444 for years. Diesel 844 is now in a museum in Bolder Nevada. (we have a show on that museum) so 844 got it's number back. The other diesel is 4884. Same as the wheel arrangement and class of 4014. Gotta love the UP.
