This resonates with me. Ive had esophoria/esotropia since childhood. Consistent use of prism glasses ALWAYS made my double vision exponentionally worse when the glasses came off. Your eye just gets lazier and lazier. Im 32 and I can no longer fuse targets more the 2 ft from my face. Pretty awful condition to live with :/

I have prism glasses and it has made huge difference driving and it also cut back on headaches already have migraines so if prisms help prevent some headaches from eye strain it's worth it. Thanks for commenting! Glad it seems to be working for you! But here’s the thing: Prism adaptation can be a pain at the end of the day. When it gets worse the individual typically has to do either surgery or vt. They almost have no option left. Why you may ask? Because typically people who require prisms usually have newly developing eye turns. The eye turn as it is freshly starting requires the prism to align images to relieve strain or stop double vision. Then once it’s treated initially it relaxes into more and requires stronger….and stronger….. and STRONGER over time. Hope this doesn’t happen to you. But it’s the general pattern to watch for. That’s why some things that may seem okay in the short term can be landmines later. Thanks for being here and sharing!

I was in a car accident Dec of 2016 and always felt off. No doctors or specialists could figure out what was wrong. In February 2024 I was working a work from home job that I what the heck had worked for about 8 months and in the computer for about 12 hours per day. Once my assignment was up in late March 2025 I started feeling Dizzy, Anxiety etc. I went to a Neuro Optometrist and she stated I had BVD and Convergence Insufficiency. My eyes never crossed and I never seen double but she said I needed Prism glasses. I am so miserable. I’ve had them going on 4 weeks and I can’t really drive or even function. I feel like I’m in a fish bowl. It’s hard to shower because I feel I have that prism adaptation. It’s horrible. I don’t know what to do to just have a regular prescription and not wear these prisms. I have even more anxiety trying to get used to them. I feel trapped and like I’m living in a fish bowl. When taking them off I feel very symptomatic now. Even worse than before I started wearing them.

Here is something else also about the Double Vision. Doctors prescribe prisms to align the eyes and typically prisms does not fix the alignment. If the double vision goes away, it likely means that the brain is suppressing one eye in order to create a single image. This is often how the double vision is dealt with by the brain when there is an alignment issue.

Are the prism glasses 100% the cause of the progression in her double vision? What was the cause of it in the first place? Does this happen in all prism glasses wearers? Or just this one case? This is not enough information and doesn’t help at all.
@visontherapy
@visontherapy Жыл бұрын
Hi Sevonne. Good question. In practically all cases daily prism users tend to get a worsening of their eyesight thus resulting in even stronger lens prescription. This is why most docs will tell you that they expect the prescription to get stronger over time. But we do not follow the approach of prescribing prisms and instead work to resolve the underlying condition without needing to make things worse by adding another debilitating factor to it even though it might be a bandaid in the moment. And for those on it already get patients off it. Thanks for commenting. Hope that answers your question.

After 3 mins online, I found a video that spoke of BINOCULAR DIPLOPIA, which described me to a T. Yes, things that make you go hmmmm, indeed. I've suffered from dry eye, sleep deprivation, poor diet since all I do is work & sleep, so I'm wearing my horizontal prism for a week, trying to get more sleep, using an eye drop and hope this improves my vision 'til I can get Lasik (maybe).

Age 64. My ex-husband mentioned long ago that I cover my right eye when reading. I don't know when this started. I had scoliosis as a child that was corrected considerably, but still have a forward head posture that they were unable to correct. I have chronic right shoulder and neck pain, as well as jaw pain on the right side. I think the neck pain began after a car accident in my late twenties or early thirties. I have always struggled with reading because I lose my place constantly. As I've gotten older I have had to switch to audiobooks because reading is exhausting. I mentioned covering my right eye to my eye doctor and that it was much worse than the left. He used a light with a line in it and discovered that either my head is tilted or my eyes aren't aligned. Is vision training available across the US? Can this be done on your own?

Second and most importantly, what we do is quite atypical and it would be a mistake to assume it is a standard outcome everywhere and all programs are the same. It is important to follow the advice of your doc unless you determine it isn’t helping. So while it is not the approach I would have taken if it works for you then your objective has been met at least temporarily. Typically longer term use is more likely to be an issue than short term. I have esotropia. Do you suggest surgery before prism glasses?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 9 ай бұрын
Ultimately the choice is yours, but my position is that neither is the best choice in correcting your eyesight. Each path has significant limitations and drawbacks. the first is that surgery is well...surgery. but more than that the surgery is more about cosmetic alignment than improving your vision. We also see many patients who have had 2,3,4 or more surgeries who still end up coming to us. I have also made many videos about prisms including this one that shows its limitations and long-term effects. This is why I choose to pivot my practice to help patients resolve and improve their vision in a way that is more effective and makes either option unnecessary. Kinda sounds like a vision therapy pitch right? But it is what it is. Ultimately you want to ask yourself what do I want for my vision? Thick glasses that will tend to increase, surgery that may not do what I need it to, or actually get better vision without either option? The choice is yours. Thanks for being here.

Thank you for the question Marsha, I used to prescribe those for patients. But what I found out is that it merely shifts the persons visual field to the side. I remember having a plastic prism on my glasses that already had prisms already in the glasses. I remember when the lady who operating on me for my last surgery asked if I wanted to be far or near sided. Was very interesting that I had to make a decision on that. I knew I had time to think about it. I can't remember what I chose. I do want to say one thing which in your video makes sense. When all of this started to happen, the difference between wearing my glasses and not wearing them are so much more worse now. I've been so used to seeing what I can using prism lenses. I do find that the more I'm on my phone and tablet doing up close things because I don't need vision correction for up close then I find my double vision is worse, there have been times when I wake up put my glasses on and I can see okay.. the one eye doctor that I saw couldn't understand why I wasn't seeing double vision up close she was trying to force my eyes to make that happen but I can see fine up close and even a little bit of a distance from me it's only things that are further in the distance that I see double and sometimes the object that I'm seeing double of is closer, the two are closer, but sometimes it's way off and the the two are further apart.. it's just awful living with this :(

I came across a video about neurolens but didn't really understand how they were supposed to be different and also wondered if they were just hyping something to make money. I guess I really don't know much about eye health. I know I have astigmatism and nearsightedness but just got switched into bifocals the last so many years. I don't really like them. I get frustrated when the angle is off and I cannot twist my head to see right. I don't even wear my glasses with as close as I sit to the computer because I would find the head tilting action annoying in the least. Today I was looking at videos about the eye. What are your thoughts on pinhole glasses for vision correction?
@rpmfoto
@rpmfoto 11 ай бұрын
The case you describe creates a misleading impression that the use of prisms can and will lead to an ever increasing need to increase prism strength over time because of adaptation. I seriously doubt that the increase to 28 was due solely to her using prisms. There must be another factor responsible for this anomaly. I believe you may have mentioned something to that effect in the video but you are scaring people enough to contact you for services. Sounds a bit like clickbait for promotional purposes.

It may be one of those “one in a thousand” but I really think that it is the same thing for me, with a higher prescription for reading … obviously not the same thing, but kind of is, if I had not wore glasses ALL the time, it would not change EVERY year. @rpmfoto

@@BarbTodd I do understand the potential for adaptation problems. However, read the title again. My objection is with the absolute nature of it. It isn’t a fair assessment at all. And using such an extreme case to assert that basically nobody should be wearing prisms is reckless. I have worn prisms for six decades and have never increased the diopter requirements due to proper management of the prescriptions. Again, the case that was used most likely had other contributing factors that were primarily responsible for the problems. Important to note is the fact that I cannot manage without prisms.
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 11 ай бұрын
Hi @rpmfoto. Thanks for your comment. While the titling may be a bit dramatic, the reality is that you are more of the exception than the norm. How can this be so? Because I have seen thousands of patients over 2+ decades and many of them end up needing us due to exactly what is being discussed in the video. Also, the basic mode of functioning and effect of the prism lens makes accommodation an expected outcome and so what you experience is a statistical outlier. The reality is that any straight-shooting practitioner who prescribes these will tell you when asked that the likelihood of increasing prescriptions is high. Not to mention that most people do not even know and are not told that they have an alternative to prisms or surgery. An alternative that is not a crutch but indeed a solution to the underlying problem. i.e you can't do without those prisms (and it is likely that you are more dependent on them) after having worn them for six decades can you? There is much else that can be said about this but ultimately no one can really be scared (or need be) into getting treatment they don't think they need as indicated by the fact that you aren't asking for treatment due to your satisfaction with what you have. @BarbTodd thank you for your comment!

But my bias is towards the real world data of people who are put in them and then what happens after they are done with us. Somehow they magically don’t need it anymore and their eyesight gets better. Hmm 🤔 Now, pretending all the comments from people who complain about their prisms are invalid and your experience is what we shall use to measure validity, the more important questions are: 1. Has your vision improved after 23 years of use? 2. Has your prescription increased since you began using them? Where were they in the beginning and where are they now? 3. Can you function without those prisms? 4. Would you still wear them if you had an option not to? That’s the first part. Let’s start there 😊

I bought them with single vision and the prism for driving else I don't need them. Daily glasses just my regular with progressive. I'm not worried my eyes will need a constant change in the strength. And only paid $27 for them online. So wonderful just ordered another pair to keep in the second car.

I have been wearing the Neuro Lens for about a year now. I don't wear them every day, only when I'm tired or when a lot of reading is required. The great thing is they have different strength prisms for distance and close up work in one lens. My eyes actually improved over time and I need lower prisms. I do have to say that Vision Therapy does help, I've done that in the past, but it didn't take away all my eye strain.

I think you hit upon an important point many of our eye problems cannot be addressed with a single prism power, but often that is how they are prescribed.
@DschungelKatze
@DschungelKatze 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is that these are supposed to be temporary. They are just a help for the lazy eye to see normally. Also a set of exercises is prescribed. And then after the situation gets better because of training a different set of prisms is prescribed. And that until eyes start seeing normally and no prisms are needed. In any case that is still better than having an operation that is in most cases purely cosmetic and fixes nothing but also can make things worse.

I’ve had a prism lens for 5 days and it has given me back my freedom and capacity to function. I have a paralyzed 4th nerve (palsy). Thus my doctors cannot train a muscle to work when the nerve no longer fires. So do you still claim that a prism lens is a bad idea and I should return to being unable to drive, read, work, etc?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy Жыл бұрын
Hi there. It appears you miss the point being made about how and why prisms are used and why it is often counterproductive in the long run if the goal is better vision and not just a crutch. Now, if you want a quick and temporary fix then you are on the right track. Also, the assertion about 4th nerve palsy is not accurate considering we work with and have help many align their eyes. The fact is the recommendation made is based on what they know and so is the solution presented which is akin to recommending crutches or a wheelchair when the individual can indeed be trained to walk. Ultimately, it still doesn't change the reality about long-term prism use especially since you are only 5 days in. But we are happy for your relief and wish you the best! Good luck.

Not a bad idea at all, while the nerves arent firing well yet , you need an aid to be able to function and work and earn a living to pay bills everyday or even pay the doctor . . While in the process of healing , prism is or an aid is definitely needed to be able to function . To treat paralysis / paresis therapy is . Stroke patients need a crutch to assist to walk while undergoing rehab /therapy . I think dr julie should consider crutches are still beneficial for daily functionality and healing . Imnobility hampers the healing process.

I got mine for my exophoria Convergence Insufficiency, it takes the stress from my eye muscles, as I can align my eye pretty easily, but I get very tired/exhausted even with these 3D, so I have to relax myself and sometime let my eyes go to relax to double vision, also having under eye sinus problem with no explanation, but (very) recently got some sinus med and it works wonders. Like I can watch tv for 30 min then go side eye, but I can watch 1-2 hours with glasses before getting very tired. Cheers, when therapy works for folks.

I went my entire life not knowing double vision wasn't normal. But I've also had headaches 8 days out of 10 for the past 20 years and would randomly go blind for up to an hour from ocular migraines quite often. At 29 (last year) I went to an optometrist on a whim because I got vision insurance for the first time and was surprised when they told me my double vision wasn't normal, and may be the cause of my headaches. My optometrist said my eye misalignment was by far the most severe case he had ever seen in his career. I was prescribed neurolens glasses and haven't had any instances of blindness nor have I had more than 6 headaches in the 12 months since wearing them. My concern about your advice in this video is that "training my eyes to align themselves" is essentially what my eyes were doing for the past 29 years, with chronic headaches and bouts of blindness as a result. How would vision therapy be different and result in reduced eye strain?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 7 ай бұрын
Glad you are finding some kind of relief after that long. But your eyes weren’t being trained. They ran wild for 20 years. Driving a car that’s out of alignment for years will not fix it. In fact only makes it worse for car and driver. Hence vision therapy is not the same as your prev experience. Bottom line is we help the eyes function properly without crutches 🩼(Which is what the prisms are). This therefore eliminates the issues that tend to come with prisms over time. But I’m glad you are better than before!

I really think my prism glasses were a bad idea and made my double vision MUCH worse. I shouldve just dealt with the slight double vision I had before, when my eyes were trying to focus at maybe TV length of 5' away. With the glasses, my eyes got used to looking at the image on the glasses lens only 1" away. Now things look double if they're only a foot away. The glasses were a terrible idea. The optometrist screwed me over with terrible advice. But it's too late now. The damage was already done. The glasses made my eyes cross in more to focus on the glasses, so I basically stare at my own nose now. I never shouldve gotten glasses. They made me worse. I only had a slight double vision before. Now it's really bad. The glasses made me focus on the glasses, so now I'm dependent on the glasses. I was better before the glasses. I shouldve just lived with my eyes how they were. I used to be able to see fine within a room, cuz my eyes were trying to focus at TV distance. Now I get double vision everywhere, even within a room, cuz my eyes are trying to focus at GLASSES distance. That was a terrible decision. I should've done my own research instead of trusting the optometrist. These prism glasses definitely made my eyes much worse. They really screwed up my life. I'm really upset that I didn't do my own research. 😢

I needed prisms for my left lazy eye and also had a bunch of other problems including moderate BVD. I went to a behavioral optometrist, and she persceibed prism for the left eye 3/4 base up and i could suddenly do all my near work really well, reading, staying organized, playing piano, etc. However, she did warn me that my brain can become dependent on the glasses, so that it was VERY important to do vision therapy exercises while I am in the prisms!!!!!!!!!! That way, I was training my brain to not get too comfortable with the lenses! It took lots of effort, but I forced the glasses and the daily VT exercises to work as a team, and now I'm seeing better than 20/20 in both eyes. I'm proof that prisms can work as an assistance tool!!!!!! But not your main solution, so I wouldn't completley disregard prisms, but put VT first. The brain is amazing. It will start to realize the dependency is bad and work to make sense of what you are trying to do:) hope this advice helps, I know how frustrating it can be.

This is not compelling. She presents a single case history that she admits involves an inherently progressive condition and claims without evidence that the prism glasses are causing the deterioration. She tells stories about brain adaptation, but does not inform what scientific studies have (or have not) been done larger sample sizes to determine if prisms themselves cause progressive double vision. People's vision often deteriorates over time, and we all know that prescriptions change over time accordingly. Are we supposed to stop correcting vision by concluding cause and effect of wearing glasses when we need new prescription? I have had pronounced double vision that has been getting progressively worse, that was affecting my quality and safety of life. I've tried a variety of recommended exercises with no notable effect. I recently got fitted with prism glasses and my life has changed dramatically, it actually feels close to miraculous. Of course, I don't know what treatment is suggested here in this infomercial, because she doesn't describe it. I'd be interested to try some therapy, but I would certainly not give up the prisms for some treatment that is partially effective and takes months or longer. The case history at the heart of this video has a patient who has engaged in this therapy but still has serious double vision in need of strong prism correction. Although this patient is stated to have improved, we get no information of how long this therapy has taken or evidence of when or whether the patient is supposed to not suffer from the disability as a result of the therapy. Meanwhile the patient is supposed to put up with the disability of double vision, which the patient still has?
@visontherapy

Thanks for your comment. But it appears that you miss the point of the video entirely. Perhaps watch it again? The patient started with Prism and came to us after eye vision impairment got almost irreparably out of control. You suggest that that they were in need of strong prism correction. Hmm. Does it make sense to need prism correction for a problem that escalated during her use of prisms and went from 6 to 21 diopters during that time? Therapy is reversing some of that impairment which traditional optometry claim is highly unlikely to impossible to do. If it was why would they suggest surgery of which she was not a candidate for due to the severity of her visual impairment that mind you started off significantly less at the time of her first use of prisms? Prisms are not meant for long term use.... Anyway, good luck with them and we are glad you have found some relief. We hope they don't but remember this video if in the future your prescription gets stronger and stronger. Good luck. PS: This is NOT an isolated case and Dr. Julie talks about this a lot in the patients who come to us.
