Two things: 1. It's impressive how fast Indycars are for a fraction of the cost of F1. 2. Faster lap times does not necessarily make for good racing. -Higher cornering speeds means greater aero dependence, which means cars can't follow closely. -Short braking distances look spectacular but it's very hard even to gain one metre under braking. -F1 overtaking is largely dependent on DRS. Let F1 be F1 and let Indycar be Indycar.

Actually Indycar's have higher top speed (240+mph) than F1(230mpg), but F1 cars are quicker in acceleration. Both series cars are capable of even higher top speeds but these are average race tune speeds, to preserve the engines. @@racergavino7274 yes it is, engine and tyre saving. It would be better if they gone cruising rather than pushing and try to close the gap (or even overtaking and defending). Midfield teams tend to give away position to the best cars without even trying to defend. And most of the drive don't give their qualifying pace in race time.
@racergavino72746 жыл бұрын
Opal Blue, okay, I’m going to put this in terms that someone who clearly doesn’t watch Formula 1 would understand. In my opinion, overtaking is way to easy in F1, but that’s not because people give up their positions; it’s because of something called DRS or the drag reduction system. You get DRS when you are within 1 second of the car behind on a straight. That means that you can really catch up and overtake easily, so I don’t like it. The reason why the cars never run as fast in the race as they do in qualifying is not necessarily because they aren’t pushing, it’s because during qualifying they have special qualifying engine modes, or “party modes”. These engine modes usually burn way too much fuel, and put too much wear on the engine to actually use for a long period of time. So, teams just won’t use them in the race.

Nothing new that the F1 cars are faster over a lap. However, one of the Andretti engineers commented about how slow the track actually is. Unofficiallly, there was a best lap of 1:47.8, and they did say they expected to be 2 seconds quicker right off coming back for the event. So if you knock another second or so off, maybe they do a 1:45.0 or thereabouts. For reference, the fastest WEC LMP1 lap in Qualifying was a 1:44.656 set last year. Austin will be ~30 mph slower in average lap speed than Watkins Glen, a track of about the same length; that tells you something about the relative number of high-speed corners between the two. I pretty much expect Austin to be the slowest permanent road course of the 2019 IndyCar season. My main concern though is the racing, and how much of a physical spread between the cars you are going to get coming off all of those slow corners. There's quite a bit of the lap that's likely to be single-file, too. Now, hopefully the flat-out sections will be long enough for the drivers to work with effectively, but I'm not exactly holding my breath on it. You shouldn't have other issues to the extent that you absolutely need a 1,207-meter-long straight to promote overtaking.
@bhjvkvkvjuvujgkv73756 жыл бұрын
Robert Pfeiffer I don’t get your logic, most of what you are talking about doesn’t matter. This track have many overtaking spots and the back stretch will be a great passing spot because of puck to pass
@Villoresi6 жыл бұрын
@@bhjvkvkvjuvujgkv7375 The track, in theory, has 3 conventional overtaking points: Turns 1, 11, and 12. But, for instance, when looking at a track like Road America, the 3 main "straights" there are preceded by faster corners than is the case at Austin. The consequence is that the physical gap between the cars increases much more at Austin on the early part of the straight, and thus you need more straight to allow the trailing car to make that back up with a better corner exit and/or the slipstream down the straight. Conversely, at Road America, guys are often setting up maneuvers while still only halfway down the run to Turn 1, 5, or Canada Corner. Now, maybe you can outbrave somebody heading into Turn 3, but I wouldn't just count on it. And Turns 3-9 are basically single-file. The middle of the stadium is pretty much follow-the-leader as well. And that long right-hander (Turns 16-18), generally seems to be single-line also. We saw Verstappen get penalized last year for cutting the middle apex, which is about the only way to stay two-wide, and Hamilton simply couldn't hold the outside line there this year. Even in the WEC, an Audi LMP1 trying to lap a Ford GT GTE-class car couldn't quite make the outside work there, made contact, and went into the barriers. Some things will definitely depend on how stringent IndyCar is in enforcing track limits at Austin.
@37nezy6 жыл бұрын
@@Villoresi the stadium is anything but single file. It consistently produces side by side racing from t12 to 17 every year. When I first saw the layout of the track that part looked disgusting, it has won me over.
@Villoresi6 жыл бұрын
@@37nezy You can take multiple lines, but actual overtakes are much rarer. I'm also generally not in favor of sections that seem to encourage spear-jobs. In any case, that's going to come down to my final sentence; basically, IndyCar will have to look the other way on track limits, because otherwise, nothing can happen there. No, the passes that do happen in there don't really excite me that much because the lack of practical track limits and context takes away almost all of the consequence and makes it like a parking lot, whether a pass comes off or not is too predictable on the approach to the last corner of the sequence, and it's a low-speed section.
@sirmonkey19856 жыл бұрын
With Indycar I think the over take options will be much better than f1 especially with the fact that they can use push to pass anywhere on the track unlike f1. Will it be slower, of course but usually leads to better racing. Should be interesting watching fp1, I expect a lot of drivers not part of tire testing will have issues with the lack of grip in the track surface.

I'm pretty sure they could change regulations to make cars faster without increasing the costs too much, but that's not what Indycar wants to deliver. They made regs pretty much around the quality of racing. The truth is, Indycar produces lots of overtaking moments in circuits where it would be almost impossible to overtake in F1... for me that's totally fine and I see no point in trying to compare F1 and Indy...

F1. Cars are NOT FASTER in the long run. HONESTLY

Think even F3 cars are faster. GP2/F2 and F1 smash these cars.

It's a tyre test mate

F2 only has 620 bhp in their current formula and less downforce than an IndyCar. On the road course IndyCar engines are tuned to 740 bhp with 790 bhp this past year when overtake is pressed. This is a tire test with the slowest tire compound at a brand new track...

I think part of it is the camera. A lot of the onboards that Indycar posts are from nonbroadcast cameras like a GoPro, and they usually have a really wide perspective. Things seems to crawl by in the periphery, but if you watch the same onboard from a normal rollhoop camera during a race broadcast, things always look faster to me.

@@railfan220 I thought so too. I know these cars are fast, but this camera is not helping... looks like a helmet cam, if i´m not mistaken.

@@panda2907 For sure. I can't tell if this is one of those lipstick cameras that the teams sometimes use or the actual helmet cam ABC/NBC used this year.

Looks.....exciting. F1 cars are so glued to the track they look like a Sunday drive even when pushing. IndyCar has corrections and power slides and drivers fighting to control their cars like race drivers should!!

Just like F1´s racing is embarrassing to Indycar´s.

At least indy cars don't sound like a hoover vaccum cleaner.

That’s not the point, an Indycar isn’t supposed to be as fast as an F1 car.

Crazy Videos Sure, the lap times are well off of Formula 1 pace, but look at how that car is dancing through every corner. Modern Formula 1 cars are on rails - no drama, no commitment.

Keep in mind that that was the first test and they could have been taking it easier.f1 will still be faster though
