If you wear a size 12 and up, crankbrothers stamp 7 in a large is amazing. I ran the vaults for 5 years and only recently started running a large stamp 7. The stamp 7 is far superior. It is just easier to get a good foot position, especially when hammering in rock gardens. There’s more leverage climbing too since you’re using more of your sole to push through each pedal stroke. I like them much better than the vaults. It might be hard to believe, but the vaults are too grippy. Especially in those same rock gardens where you want to reposition your foot on the pedal. The vaults are hard to adjust and their smaller size make it more difficult to get proper foot position. Stamps look amazing too.

I've ridden clipless for a long time an struggle with flats when it gets rough going down an steep going up but manage the same stuff ok in clips...but wondered if these magpeds could be the best of both worlds...but at 150 euro they are pricey to take a punt on 😏

I’ve ridden a lot of different flat pedals for over 25 years. I’ve got a set of mag/ti DMR vaults on a bikepacking rig I don’t even abuse, and they’re some of the least durable pedals I’ve had in awhile. They need to be rebuilt about every 500 miles. The rubber seals crack and break, the inner bushings wear and get sloppy, and the outer bearings are too small. The all time greatest pedals I’ve found for durability are Odyssey Trail Mix pedals with sealed bearings. I’ve got a set that are over 10 years old and the bearing have no play. This is because they’re pretty thick and the bearings are large. They’ve taken so many rock hits that the outer corners have rounded off into an organic looking form. I wish pedals were just designed with a rounded outer corner to start with, as it would minimize the hang up and damage with a pedal strikes. Also, I think it’s impossible to pack durable bearings inside the thin platform of modern pedals and still have a thick enough axle to not break. That’s why some pedals have a bearing bulge near the crank. Even then, most designs with a bearing bulge use an outer bushing. A broken in bushing is just a step along the path to a broke down bushing. The best pedals currently on market that I’ve used are the Specialized Boomslang. That’s because they use a outboard roller bearing instead of a bushing. Theoretically, they’re also rebuildable, but you can’t buy the rebuild kit or tool. 🤔. I’m still looking for the Goldilocks pedals.

Hey Vital, this was a super thorough review and I loved the extensive testing. Though, what about the Chromag Dagga or Crankbrothers Stamp 7 with 10mm pins (you can even run 12mm pins on the front and rear of the pedal with 10mm pins in the midsection to create some concavity)? Just asking because I've spent years on the original Stamps (now called Stamp 7) with 10mm pins and when paired with a Five Ten Impact shoe your feet go nowhere when you want them to go nowhere, but you can adjust your foot positioning while standing up on the trail--a little difficult, but possible. And I've heard the Chromag Daggas are superior to the Deity TMacs as they provide the closest feeling to being actually clipped into your pedals. Also, what do you think about including pin diameter and shape in your next flat pedal review? I've found Crankbrothers thicc pins with flat tops and thread prevent my foot from shifting side to side when my foot accidentally hovers a few millimeters off the pedal's platform. The thread also helps my foot from slipping up at all. When I compared them to the Race Face Chesters and One Up Composite pedals, Crankbrothers pins took the win in my book. One Up pins felt like they stabbed my shoe (which is fine) and provided acceptable traction, but if I unweighted my foot just a little, the pins started dancing between the dots in even my Freeriders. The Race Face pins were not only narrow--slightly wider than the Chester's, granted--they were round at the tip which caused my foot to feel as though it would slip a bit when I adjusted my feet for sharp turns and when pedaling hard. One last thing. This is asking a lot, but could you add more in depth personal anecdotes to your review for each pedal? Maybe do a small _KZbin_ video series where you give each pedal a five minute video review talking about how they feel. Long story short, thanks you for doing this as I am in the process of shopping for new pedals.
@vitalmtb
@vitalmtb 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! We're currently testing the Daggas with great results. Certainly a very grippy pedal, not sure if we're ready to say it's THE grippiest. As for your suggestions about pin type etc, it's an interesting idea but maybe not practical in terms of the detail we'd have to get into. Individual pedal reviews can be found on our site for many of the pedals included in the face off if you want more in-depth data and the "personal anecdotal evidence" for each one.

I have had very bad experience with the Deity T-MAC. They feel great, but the bearings in them are smaller than other pedals, and fail without warning despite flawless maintenance (no dirt or water in pedal). And I don't know about you, but I don't carry spare pedals in my pack. All my other Deity pedals (Skyscraper and Composites) work flawlessly, so I was super disappointed. The Spank-Spoon continue to work flawlessly after 2 years, but have a very short axle causing shoes to rub against cranks for those with shoes over size 10.

I love the feel of vaults, ridden them for years but they’re bushes are terrible and the service kit (here in the uk at least) is expensive... swapped last year to Hope (bought through work on a substantial discount - otherwise I would’ve gone elsewhere) and while they don’t ‘feel’ as nice as the vaults they’re grippy and have lasted a Scottish winter completely maintenance free - more than the DMR’s could ever do...

Anything in the list would probably feel very similar to most people. However, someone actively paying attention to their footing all the time, will notice. When you ride, think about how much your foot slides around. Anything from a little slip off an outer pin to a complete kick off the pedal. I know I don't recall much of that, other than the occasional nasty bite from the pins on the shin. Lol

I completely disagree with these results. I've had a lot of pedals and they all have issues. I truly believe the Hope F20 are absolute pinnacle when it comes to pedals. 1. The internals have 3 bearings and long DU bushing with no play at all. 2. Pins are screwed from the bottom with no exposed threads, so no difficulty with removal in case of damage. 3. Axle cover bolt sits behind a guard, so it won't get destroyed. 4. Double inboard seals. 5. If you don't install the two centered pins they become concaved. 6. Even after many miles they don't spin, but rather stay in position. 7. They look amazing.

No offense... but the DMR vaults really sucked, I blew them up in under 2 months BOTH pedals! No thanks, took your advice last time & now I’m throwing them away 😥 Didn’t even want to pay 30$ to replace the internals because I just figure I’ll blow them up again in another month or two. Trying the One Up pedals now.. so far so good

The pair you see in this video have been used since 2016, with one bushing swap. They've been ridden HARD as you can probably tell from the amount of wear on the pedal body. As we did mention in the video, the bushing does tend to develop a little slop, but we have certainly not been able to "blow them up" in two months. Of course riding conditions play into this, but what we like about them is that while they may get a a little sloppy, there's no catastrophic failure even after running them way too long on worn bushings.

Vital MTB Don’t you worry.. I’ll have a full video showing how much wear and the sounds these pedals make.. alien like.. on my channel soon! I’ll be brutally honest as I cant fake this kind of thing! So yes I’ve ridden them what I call HARD & tho they are the nicest looking pedals and feel very nice under the foot.. they unfortunately both spin endlessly & sound/feel absolutely terrible now with vibrations and the noises as I’ve mentioned.. Stay tuned

for me all of these are too small, including all of the rest of pedals on the market apart from Pealing Innovations Catalyst pedals, which is what I have been using for several years. I use size 44 shoes, so I need long platform, none of these pedals will offer arch support. I use mid foot position, only posisjon that felt natural to me. now there is a larger version, and a new version called Catalyst Evo, which is lighter and has different pins. Regular Guy Mountain Biking did a video on them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqm0o3djfMtgY6s

46 here (12.5US). TMacs fit perfect, though my stance is a bit more shifted towards the toe. I find arch support is more dictated by shoe choice.
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 4 жыл бұрын
@@letterbomb999 long platform means you can have a flexier shoe and still have the support, of course having stiffer shoe on small pedal will make the experience better than a flexy shoe, for example Five Ten Impact is a much stiffer shoe, but it still is not the same thing as having a long platform. This was very noticeable using Five Ten freerider on Straitline DeFacto, I could feel that my feet were not supported cus of the small platform, but now it feels perfect, but the height and heavy five ten Impact I don't use, they now, cus they are warm, not water proof, nor breathable so not good for summer nor good for winter, basically it's a pure downhill shoe, for smashing your feet into things, landing on your feet, stiffness.
@letterbomb999
@letterbomb999 4 жыл бұрын
@@mtbboy1993 Exactly my setup. Impact Lows on Tmacs, pure DH. The added weight of the Impacts helps keep the foot on the pedal (I'm also 200lbs), and the stiffness gives great support. Was using Freeriders before, and definitely suffered with less support. I found the new Shimano AM shoes to be better for trail riding vs Freeriders, though I also find that I dont need a massive platform for trail riding vs DH.

@@letterbomb999 I will be testing the new five ten trail cross mid. I hope they are better than Freerider, I hear they are more breathable.

I have stopped watching these to base a purchase on unless i just want to get an idea of how they look in real life. Feel so much of the rating is based on the rider skills and opinion. The review covers a lot of pedals but what is good for this guy isn't necessarily good for me.
@vitalmtb
@vitalmtb 4 жыл бұрын
That is always true of any review. We did use a modular scoring system as well as ad-hoc input about what we felt on the trail, so hopefully you can derive some value from that data to make up your own mind.
