How can you say that he is singing bad? He sang a lot of songs live and they were perfect. The Star (Zvezda) on CICAF was amazing too. Maybe this was his last song or maybe after some hard-to-sing song so his voice can be touched by high vocals. Another thing is that he is not young like in the record studio. You cannot say that he sing bad because it is not true :)

He started singing like this because there was a mandate in China for performers to sing live in festivals. Historically, up until 2010, singers were encouraged to lipsync as a means to keep high performance standards on TV which generated global controversy during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He could have done the live-proving trick with the swinging mic, but it seems that was not possible if he didn't have his sound engineer or equipment (in later years he did do this at small festivals though).

@@ntikrasntikras2694 there are multiple performances from the time period like this. It was from late 2010 onwards that Chinese event organizers finally tried to enforce entertainers to sing live. There are still loopholes like the high notes on Opera 2 could be justified as background/supporting vocals. Before this change, Vitas sounded studio-perfect at all Chinese events... Makes you think. Also watch the Mommy and Son performance in Kiev - in songs where he actually sings live the mic feed has this awful hissing, but in none of the "studio-perfect" vocal performances.

He doesn't ever really use autotune, he mostly only used it during the Philosophy of Miracles and Smile era to produce the really quirky vocals. The studio vocals are polished but not extensively autotuned at all, he's just great in the studio and terrible on stage. You get a lot of people like the guy above referencing Opera 2 being sung live once a blue moon in the 90s as proof he can sing, but that's basically dismissing his entire career from 2001-present - he has way better songs than Opera 2, and higher notes too!
