I have searched and searched for a thorough explanation about pruning grapes, and I am so glad I finally found this video! Now I understand both how and why to prune the neglected grapevine in the backyard. The photographs overlaid with coded graphics made the concepts very clear and easy to understand. How generous of you to share your expertise with us freely. Thank you so much. To your health!

I'm studying for WSET level 4 and had real problems absorbing the info about viticulture - if you're not a farmer or ever stepped I foot inside a vineyard, it doesn't exactly leap off the page... So, I just spent the afternoon watching most of the videos so far. I was looking for something that would take me through the process of looking after vineyard step by step and I struck gold. Thank you so much for posting, Tom. Finally I understand about spurs, cordons, fruiting canes etc. They're unbelievably informative and really well done. This must have been days and days of work - it's a fantastic resource to make available for free.

Some people have complained about the "slow" place of this video, but it contains a level of detail no other video I've watched include. if this video video was faster-place, those same people would likely complain about lack of content. GREAT VIDEO!

This is absolutely incredible information. Step by step, old-fashioned, old-timer wisdom here. I love the pace and the patience you exhibit, sir. You're from a different time in America: a BETTER time. It's as if I'm being taught by my kindly neighbor.

Awesome! My dad asked me to come "cut" the grape vines. No one knows how. My grandfather lived to 100 and it's been sitting for about 6 years now since he passed on. It's a HUGE, covering over like a huge hall! they used to sit under for shade. It's beautiful, but needs big help!! I don't even think my grandfather kept it up as he used to at his age. So now I'm searching, scrambling to learn. I've always wanted to learn and I'm so glad I found the perfect videos to help. Your a great teacher, good speaker, not repeating yourself, lol, not talking for the sake of talking as many KZbinrs do. So I thank you so much!! I wish I could send you pics of the over 100 year old Concord grape vine I've got to figure out how to prune, here on Cape Cod!! But I'm sure there are tree people around if I feel it's too much. Just doubt dad will let ANYONE pay for a pruner and won't pay himself either! Old school. Anyway, thanks so much!! On to the next video!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you for the explanation of how to prunes grapevines as well as why certain things are necessary to do, like leaving a cane or two that may eventually replace a cordon. I planted my grapevine 21 months ago, and today realized it needs pruning, but had no idea how to shape it and what to trim in order to get fruit. Hap lots of leaves this year, no fruit yet.

great video. should i care about spur renewals if growing on 16 ft by 16 ft by 8 ft high pergola. i have trunks growing from only 2 corners of the 4 corner pergola, and there are canes all over the top covering it completely. I think i should just slightly tip (heading cut) prune 1 year only canes and spur prune (1 or 2 nodes) older canes and laterals? appreciate thoughts?

Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! Appreciate your methodical approach! Just recently acquired 2 mature vines (about 5 years old) which I have replanted and they are responding well. They were pruned hard for the transplant and my intention is to train these across and over a pergola. My question is whether I should prune to secure structure during the growing season or wait until normal spring pruning??
@hugobribeiro4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your videos. I have one question regarding pruning that is the following. If we have a cane system and for some reason, we want or need to change, can we keep the cane and transform that to a cordon?
