I was there when this happened. I was there when the Beth Mead injury happened. I think I might be cursed. And traumatised. Every slight leg injury I get now is scary. The silence of the crowd when Viv went down was unsettling.

I was at this game, and it was horrible. viv was down for a long time, and instantly, we knew something was horribly wrong. The ref had no control over this game. There could have been a lot more injuries as tackles were not punished. Viv has the best support around her and will be back stronger than ever 💔

You raised a very important point which hadn't even occurred to me: Are menstrual cycles causing ACL injuries? Or are menstrual cycles BEING BLAMED FOR ACL INJURIES? There is so much "casual" sexism in society. Female footballers received little or no encouragement as girls, as well as a lack of facilities, or opportunities to play. They have to endure constant online sexist and homophobic abuse, racist abuse (if they're black), objectification, and derogatory comments from men about their looks and physique. Then there's the sexual abuse uncovered by the Yates Report, the blatant misogyny of the Spanish Football Federation (AND EVERY OTHER FOOTBALL FEDERATION), the lack of investment, the pitiful pay (men in the Premier League make A HUNDRED TIMES what women in the WSL get), AND the much greater risk of ACL injuries. It's no wonder that Aston Villa's Remi Allen, struggling with HER ACL injury, said in a recent Instagram post that she felt like giving up. When Asmita Ale moved from Villa to Spurs she was subjected to online comments from male so-called Villa fans calling her a traitor, and a 🐍, but when Jack Grealish left for Manchester City the exact same Villa fans called him a hero and wished him luck, despite the fact that Jack bragged about his one hundred million pound transfer fee. Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez won tonight's World Cup Golden Glove award and, while on the podium, he moved the trophy down to his groin as a phallic symbol for the world to see 🙄 (from hero to zero with one gesture). Emiliano's Argentine team-mate, Messi, the toast of the tournament and hero to millions of children, signed a lifetime deal with Pepsi in 2017 from which he makes £18,000,000 every year; talk about selling your soul to the devil! The beautiful game has become the Greed game, as far as men's football is concerned (I can't even afford the tickets anymore). It was incredibly moving to see Viv's and Beth's tears of frustration, and Leah Williamson's tears of joy and triumph, because you KNOW the battles they have had to fight their whole lives just to be accepted (never mind respected) as female footballers, playing the sport they love.

Love your videos guys, was waiting for this one in particular. Hope you make one for Beth's new contract and video massages to have some good news.. *silently sobbing still* Have you seen after the black screen in the match video how Beth walks after the stretcher with her crutches? It's a very short clip, more like a picture, but seeing this, I was like...well..at least they have themselves. Love and greetings from Germany

Look at the team we in the US could have fielded but knee injuries bit us hard: Julie E., Sam M., C. Press, Lynn W., Tierna D., and Cat M .Could any other national team on this planet competed on despite all that? More research needs to be shared than the menstrual mumbo jumbo. Let's remember what our US women's demands were besides equal pay - "field conditions". Also "recovery" is a far more important entity than something stressed during road trips and World Cups. Our National team travels all over for their training. Wish we could hear from current players if the facilities are more than just nice fields and weight rooms. Lastly a side note, the video released on Morgan Gautrat recently. She specifically talked about the facilities at Kansas City and mentioned "recovery". Body structure, muscular balance, boots technology, turf and some instances opponent (don't forget Krieger before the London Olympics?)...its all got to add up in any athlete's body. Doctors are performing ACL surgeries on young teenagers now.

As I said on the Beth injury video, whether it’s a partial tear or a full rupture is pretty immaterial. For a pro-athlete, surgery would almost always be the recommended course of action for even a partial tear. The reason being that although a partial tear will heal without surgery, it will never be as strong as it was and will be liable to tear again. If you’re a pro-athlete, that is an untenable situation to put yourself in as you will spend 3-4 months rehabbing and then likely tear it again soon after returning to playing or even full change of direction training. Also the viv injury is like textbook ACL injury.

When it comes to the boots in football, I have some experience with having two different grass footballboots. One is FG (firm ground) and the other is AG (artificial grass). When I wore FG on both normal grass and artificial grass, I had quite some injuries, the knob pattern is very agressive, yes it helps with running faster but, it just puts your shoes in the ground in a way it's not as flexibel to move around in, because you can get 'stuck' in the ground. When I was looking for new boots, I was thinking about buying AG boots because, I was also playing football on artificial grass sometimes, I found out that AG boots are way more easy to move around in. They have round knobs and are very flexibel. They are made for AG but also work on normal grass. I didn't have any injuries having AG boots. In professional football you will see a lot of people wearing FG boots, which I think they should rethink about, I for sure think this is one of the reasons of the injuries professional footbal players get it from. Together with the tightness of the boots, it only makes sense they are getting injuries because, you can't move around that easily when you get 'stuck' in the ground and the foot can't move around in the boot, You can't make sure nothing will happen to your ankle or knee anymore. Hopefully Viv will get better soon. I'm Dutch and hope she will be there in the World Cup. If not luckily we have a young player called Fenna Kalma, she was the topscorer of the world last year. She scored the most goals out of anyone. She is like a young Vivianne Miedema. So if Viv will not be there, I guess the young player gets the chance, just like our young keeper van Domselaar had in the euro's.

It's already 1:30 am Sunday morning here in Austria and still no update on Viv's injury. It doesn't look good and I expect that more checks have to be done. This shows how much more research has to be done in women's football. It was actually a good match up to this point with Arsenal conceding a very unlucky own goal. Arsenal looked not as focused in the second halftime. Very unfortunate that Arsenal have now lost their best scorers Beath as well as Viv and Stina Blackstenius hasn't scored for a while now. Arsenal have though still qualified for the quarterfinals, but will have to look out for avilable strikers in the winter break. There are rumours that Danish international players Signe Bruun currently Lyon) might join Arsenal.

I think they were trying to blame this injury on something and said “oh it’s a female, got to be blamed on a period.” There are a number of things that could have caused such an injury. Here’s hoping she makes a swift recovery.

I saw the headlines and knew your video was coming very soon. Sad that Viv can’t catch a break this year. I thought the same for Christen and Beth, just because they’re getting injured when they’re facing the height of their careers. Hoping for a speedy recovery! ♥️🤍 The menstrual cycle theory is bogus! But I will say my 2 cents are that women are more prone to ACL injury because of anatomical differences- wider hips make for a lower center of gravity and I think just naturally weaker knees. Then again, I’m not a doctor.

Many Years ago a friend told me that Arsenal (men) were very prone to get injured. Players that had little injuries suddenly got injured at Arsenal. This was due to the type of pitch used by them at training. I am not sure if that is true but now the injuries starts to mount. Many of the key players are out 😒 Beth is off, Viv is off too now. Last standing, Daan 🤭

I guess we can say for sure males and females are different Men have more muscle mass around the knees, men have testosterone, which builds muscle mass, women produce much more estrogen, which helps bone growth, but also causes more laxity (looseness) in tendons To blame this on a women having a period is wildly stupid/simple minded, yes more estrogen is produced during a cycle, but that's a lame explanation ,instead of women are overworked, and are not getting enough rest between matches/tournaments ,or it's actually the game, twists, stops, turns Women are different

Great Content! You should have looked at the sequence of play just before the foul on the McCabe vs DVD. There is some testy play that lead up to it. I know Sara & Sarah seem a bit reluctant to do detailed analysis on the play, but I think it does have some insight. Also I think there is a lot of unknowns in women's health and especially fitness/athletics. Though the report's headlines cites the menstrual cycle, it really is just a slapdash hypothesis. The clearest and best evidenced issue/outrage from this should be the difference in ignorance between men's athletic health and women's. About the hypotheses reported about why this might happen are in part the result of the fact that journalists are going to be asking questions and really prodding for anything they can put in the story beyond "we don't know." So just about anything that can come up will be reported on and in this case probably make the headline. A side issue regarding the sports/trainer world is that empirical studies require a certain amount of transparency and release of knowledge and results. This is in a world where careers are often made about cultivating an aire of 'this guy's secret program' or 'this guy oversaw these 5 super athlete's recovery so he knows what is up.' This basically subsumes the empirical work which should be done explicitly and publishable in words, into some dude's experience an filtered through all the biases of his memory, experience, and BS (I'm guessing its mostly guys, but I'm sure some women are bullshiting like this too). In conclusion and like a lot of health science, there are some heavy incentives against a more rigorous approach to this aspect of women's health. Many of these incentives push hardest against the experts in the field, who themselves have an incentive to limit how transparent they are to better cultivate the, special knowledge aura that helps define their field, even if they are 'publishing' their work. I feel that that at especially the elite level, there is much more mixing and blending between the role of academic kinesologist and fittness guru than most, especially in popular journalism, would suggest.

It has been known for a while women have weaker connective tissues compared to men and thus are biologically more prone to injuries. Guess nature more evidently evolutionary biology makes the males more sturdy as they are more known to fight and hunt for food than females. Maybe more research needs to be done on strapping the knees or ankles to see if that helps reduce ACL injuries.

The WSL clubs have to invest in research. For the safety of their employees and if nothing else to protect their investment. yuck. Like you both, I'm wary of the whole menstrual cycle thing. I'm not an expert in human biology but as it's written in the articles related to ACL's and women's football, it kind of smacks of "Idk, women. amirite?" There's definitely something to be said for wearing shoes that fit you and are fit for your purpose. Try hiking up a mountain in boots that don't quite fit. You'll know about it. Or run up to 10k a day 4-5 days a week for years as pro footballers do, in boots that don't fit right. Again, you'll know about it. It's horrible cos these injuries will affect them, forever. It'll curtail the longevity of their career in the short to medium term and it'll affect their mobility as they age. Here's hoping the clubs will invest in research so that they can at least create preventative measures for these women.

Haha, please don't blame science for this ! Science is just there to reveal stuff that we did not know before. It's been only what 10 - 20 years since women play football at this intensity level : matches every weekend, trainings several times a week. So of course we learn stuff about injuries as we progress, because they occur more often. So they're focusing on the menstrual cycle - but perhaps just because it's the first thing that comes to mind - as a difference with male footballers. In time they will surely look into other factors as well - the boots, the schedule, the food, the facilities etc. I would like to know if the trainers, physios, doctors from the different clubs share information and compare notes, because if they just consider it as "club secret" and sit on the data, it will be much longer before we can learn anything to try to prevent these.
