Vivian often gets overlooked when mentioning 80's shredders. Those two Dio albums were just monstrous i still listen to them

Amazing how sharp and worldly he is at 21. Reminds me of Eddie at thst age.

Yeah, totally! Robin Crosby, too-but he was a little bit older. I still can’t get over that Warren DeMartini interview, I couldn’t get very far with it. Sounded like such an idiot. Maybe more like a typical 23 year old, ha ha.

It's interesting to hear him talk about how intimidating Ronnie James Dio was to him. But he really doesn't sound disrespectful in any way. I realize he was still in the band then, but I think the real reason his attitude changed was that he was really hurt by the promises of equal compensation that never materialized. More than just the money, I believe he felt betrayed. People can say what they want, we all loved Ronnie, but the other two band members have 100% confirmed they were all promised an equal split after the band was established and Ronnie broke his promise. I've always felt that Vivian is a straight shooter. Even if you don't like the way he says things. He's very dry, haha. People always say they want the truth, but often times that's only if "the truth" is nice and friendly. Thanks for another great interview Jas. You rock!

I think Ronnie would have given the equal shares, but management was against it, and used Ronnie's fears and ego with hey your the star, you played with the greatest guitar players in the world (Blackmore and Iommi) but Holy diver was simply a ground breaking album. I don't know how much Vivian wrote, but the solos were his. The musicians made that album,and all 4 of them made the sound together. Those first two albums were instant classics. After the original guys splintered it was never the same. Ronnie's had be screwed over so much by bands in the past I believe he was talked into something that he normally wouldn't have done. The fact that he was signed as a solo act, and management and the record company telling him that everyone was replaceable, when Ronnie knew he had something special with the original band.

@@golgothaassassin5035 Well, he made them a promise and he didn't keep it. In my opinion, I believe he meant it when he said it. But all these justifications you're making mean nothing to me. The oddest one is saying that perhaps he felt entitled because he had been taken advantage of in his career. If anything, that should teach a person not to do that to someone else. And don't even get started with his wife/manager. She's a crook just like Sharon Osbourne. I'm a huge Dio fan from Rainbow 'Debut" to Dio 'Master Of The Moon'. I bought every album and saw him in concert many times. He has an incredible reputation for being absolutely wonderful to his fans. But people act like he's a Saint. And because Vivian has always had a blunt way about him, he was treated poorly by the fans for years over these allegations. In the end, the other two members who were there confirmed what happened. I don't think it's right. Simple as that.

Ive never overlooked Vivian personally. Ive always admired his playability...especially considering how young he was in the Dio era. He was certainly a force to be reckoned with at that point

its interesting hearing Viv in this interview then to hear how he spoke just a year or two later about his relationship with Ronnie. Ive met Viv twice...once around the Riverdogs days and he was approachable and nice enough then I met him again in about 2007 and he acted like a primadonna, it was very disappointing. Maybe he was having a bad day...not sure. Hes a brilliant player...I appreciate that he has a solid career with Def Leppard but his playing skills have been totally sidelined in that band...he plays second fiddle to Phil Collen which is unfortunate because in my opinion Viv is a far better player than Phil....but....Im sure Viv enjoys the paychecks Def Leppard offers.

It's easy to forget the blissful ignorance of guitarists - even the best ones like Viv - in the pre-internet era. Most 21 year old guitar shredders today would have a detailed run down of each gadget and plug-in in their signal chain and be able to discuss their techniques and modal choices in forensic detail.

29:00 minutes in: "If I play a riff or a scale..." I don't believe half of what he's saying. I guarantee that he worked out a lot of his solos in advance.

@@flazjsgi think he of course know the scales but doesn't know their names or modes. It's like he play with sensation not by theory. At this same interview he asked about some Don't Talk To Strangers intro and he was very difficult to explain
@derrickj84247 күн бұрын
Some people can’t fathom that one might be talented enough to create music without knowing every nuance of theory. Those are the type who spend years studying but couldn’t write a song if their life depended on it. Real musicians like Viv etc just have the gift. Sorry for the cope.
