@@hevyonez97 No, Joe didn't play this...I did - if you listen (not even that carefully I might add) you'll hear that it's not a sample but a live performance - there's variation throughout. The song was produced by this cat named Osun Lade and when he first recruited me and my boy Gene Lake (drums) to play on this he played us the demo which DID feature the Joe Sample sample (no pun intended). The sample clearing fee would have been too much so he asked me to replay the part, to which I agreed under one condition: that he credit Joe Sample as co-writer on the song; I wasn't about to replay something to save Sony money and then have Joe be on the outside in terms of writer's credit. I also let Joe know personally that this went down, so he knew about it [as well]. I played piano and synths, as I said that's Gene Lake (on drums) and our boy Reggie Washington is on bass.
