Come watch a quick review of the Vivitar 28mm f2.5 wide angle lens adapted to Sony A6000. The Vivitar was made in Japan, and features an all metal construction. The lens is a little larger than most 28mm prime lenses, and that's because the it has a large front element that requires a 62mm filter thread. Using this lens on a APS-C sized sensor this lens becomes a 42mm prime. My copy uses the Minolta MD mount, but Vivitar made this lens for other mounts as well. In this weeks episode we'lI take a look closer look at the lens, show off some of the lens features, and take some sample photos and videos. Adapting vintage lenses can be an excellent way to acquire quality glass at a bargain price.

Oh my goodness DUDE... you review a lot of the lenses I got my self! For example the Pentax, Canon FD, Minolta lenses... I can see a lot of folks having those, but this Vivitar is a rare beauty. Mine is the M42 thread, and I hook it up to my a6k! I don't know if it's just me, but my lens at f2.5 is a little soft, but stop down to f3.x and it gets sharp... at f4 is perfect!. One thing I love about this specific lens is the focus throw, it's so long = great for videographers. Thanks for the video!

Hard to tell for sure on KZbin but it seems remarkably sharp. Good find.
@AdaptedAlpha
@AdaptedAlpha 8 жыл бұрын
+timskinnercanada I agree, KZbin isn't the best for displaying sharpness. Like most vintage lenses, it's a little soft wide open, but sharpens up once you start stepping it down. One point I should of mentioned is easily the lens flares. A little bird told me you bought an old Fuji lens...

I set up an eBay filter for this 28 so I can nab a deal if one pops up. I really like the design. Thanks for the review. Yep the little Fuji is a rare gem. It's a 55/1.8 M42. Very compact. Sharp and lovely bokeh. One of my faves so far I'd say.

I also have this lens on my a6000. It suffers from distortion, softness, chromatic aberrations and lens flaring. I tested it out against kit lens at similar focal length. The kit lens performed way better. This lens kinda caught up with kit lens at about f5.6 to f8, making kit lens faster and sharper. Vivitar 28mm f2.5 kinda looses it's purpose for having f2.5, sice it's hardly usable at that aperture. My best bet this was made for more like close up shots, where softness isn't that much visible. It is possible to get nice long exposure pictures. Though they won't be the sharpest images.

+greysuit17 Really nicely constructed lens. A draw back that I should have mentioned, is that big front element if very susceptible to flares.

I just bought this lens! Pairing it with a speed booster. 20mm f/1.8 equivalent!

pairing with speedbooster gets you a 28-30mm of this lens, not 20mm.

I thought MC/MD mount was a misnomer and that they're all AR mounts?
@REFIGUY69

I'm confused. How can you tell what mount to buy from KnF for vivitar? In a previous video the vivitar needed a PK ring and this one an MD. Iknow this lens here came with minolta stuff in a bag as mentioned. But what if I'm buying a lens on its own without knowing what camera it came off of?
@AdaptedAlpha
@AdaptedAlpha 7 жыл бұрын
+REFIGUY69 usually there is an indicator on the lens "MD","PK", etc...but if there's no indication you'll have to know what some of the different mounts look like.

Nice lens. I have the f2.8 on an FD mound and I like it quite a bit. I'll keep an eye out for this one. Nice video, as always! Also, I just posted a "What's in my camera bag" video. It's not nearly as concise and well edited as your video but I thought you might find it interesting. Thanks!

This becomes a 42mm on the Sony, what kind of shots would be good for that focal length? Thanks
@AdaptedAlpha
@AdaptedAlpha 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. At 42mm I’d say it fits that general purpose length.
@Valiumtino71

Does an adapter ring change the focal lenght in any way?
@mikeyzor2
@mikeyzor2 5 жыл бұрын
Not really. The lenses were designed for cameras with mirrors between the film and the lens. Mirrorless bodies dont waste thst space for a mirror anymore so that the adapter takes up exactly that amount of room. Hence, it should behave just like it is designed to.

I purchased a used Canon AE1 for my daughter,with extra lenses.Took to store,had examined and all is in great functioning shape! However,we don't know how to remove the cover to put the Vivitar 52mm 70-210mm (#77468307) lens on the camera.....is there something that needs to be lined up to get it to unlock? It came with no manual and i am losing my mind,hoping maybe you can help?

Hi Colleen, sorry you're having trouble. Is the cover on AE1 (body cap) or is the cover on the Vivitar (rear lens cap)?
@colleenbasso8504

I would say the rear lens cap? The end of the lens that actually clicks onto the camera

Love your vids, Do more! Whats your current opinion on MD/MC lens, have the prices online seem inflated? if not whats your best bang for buck Minolta(or third-party MD) and most valuable MD lens?
@AdaptedAlpha
@AdaptedAlpha 8 жыл бұрын
+Wyant Nguyen Thank's for the kind words. I think there are still good deals online, but I prefer to buy from my thrift shops. Bang for the buck will depend on your personal preferences, but the ROKKOR-X 45/f2 and 50/f1.7 can be had really cheap, both good lenses. Most valuable is probably ROKKOR-X 50/1.4:)
