Vivo X80 Pro: The good, the bad & the ugly

Vivo has announced a worldwide launch for the X80 Pro, which looks a lot like a successor to last year's exceptional X70 Pro+ - after all, it borrows most of that phone's specs and camera setup, and there's no sign of an X80 Pro+ yet.
There's a lot to love in the X80 Pro, but not every change is for the better. As one of the X70 Pro+'s biggest fans, our deputy editor Dom breaks down the good, the bad, and the ugly in everything that Vivo has changed for this year's model.

Disagree, a gimbal is far more useful on a longer focal length as an ultra-wide shot is far easier to stabilise than a narrower focal length. As for the camera hump, it is more practical as it stops the wobbling when using the phone on a flat surface.

Interesting point on the gimbal, I hadn't thought of it like that! I still feel like I'd (personally) get more use out of the ultrawide at night, which balances it out - but then other people may not - Dom

True to some extend but the stabilization is actually good enough without the gimbal, unless the shooter is on a fit or something. The only time that farther focal lens is useful is mostly in the video shots where u are zooming onto stuffs but if u are filming in ultrawide aspect, the microshakes is very bad compared to the old x70 pro even. And i do agree the X80 Pro hump is better as a practical design and does not wobble compared to the previous X70 series. But it could also be better done, lets hope the future releases sees a better design overall and more color variants.

There is a lot of good!! Very little bad.... And I'm pretty sure the only "ugly" he was talking about is himself🤷.. He should worry less about a "Jimbal"🤣 and worry more about deciding if he wants a comb over or a perm.!. .. But then I guess he'd have to edit the video title to be just the good and the bad if he fixes the whole ugly thing with the hair! LOL bahaha

Wtf... The design is gorgeous but yes I wish companies would offer a colour thing on their website. Obviously phones would be a bit more expensive but more fun colours are always better

Great review. I use the Vivo X50 Pro for filming YT vids with the gimbal on the main (great, but a tad narrow FOV). Som looking to upgrade and LOVE the gimbal on the ultrawide on X60 Pro+ and X70 Pro+. Was hoping for same + f/1.3 main on X80 Pro but maybe 'if' there is a plus? Meanwhile, now looking for a X70 Pro+.

Yess...The Ultrawide on X80 Pro is a downgrade...In fact, we use Ultrawide camera more than the portrait...So, gimbal should be on Ultrawide...

How would you say it stacks up against vivo x note? Which offers better value for money? Is camera in x80 plus noticeably better than in x note? Or is worth to go for x70 pro plus?

Sadly we haven't been able to try the X Note out yet, so can't compare directly - especially in terms of camera quality. On paper though they are very similar, main difference is really just that the Note is a bit bigger (with bigger battery too), and X80 Pro probably has slightly better 2x zoom camera. Not a lot in it though - Dom

what about the UI (Funtouch OS). Is the user experience good ? any bugs you noticed ?

I don't love Funtouch. It's not that it's very buggy, but there's a fair bit of bloatware, and annoyances like very aggressive background battery monitoring. It feels like MIUI and ColorOS did a few years ago. - Dom

I didn't review the S22 Ultra myself, so can only go by what I've seen in other coverage. I'd say Ultra wins on periscopic zoom stuff, but X80 Pro wins on night mode, and even with the gimbal change I think the ultrawide is better in the Vivo - Dom

I really like how this phone looks. Is it loaded with Chinese bloat ware? That would be a no go for me. But if it's not, I'm considering getting this. Does the camera get great shots of the moon? That might be the deciding factor for me, as I'm big on that.

Off topic. I just got an iphone 13. At first, what a mistake, but I started getting used to it and now it’s great . I learned about it, and it seems like it’s learning about me. I’m giving my One Plus 8 Pro to my wife, which is still a great phone 👍

i13 is a great phone but Vivo X70 Pro+ easily bests it in low light and stability esp on ultrawide with gimbal, 2 BIG plusses for me.

With the processor bump taken into account I'd take the X80 Pro overall - but there really isn't a lot in it when compared to the X70 Pro+ (bigger gap compared to X70 Pro though!). Means X70 Pro+ would be the better buy if you can find it at a good discount - Dom

Still testing it out properly, so too soon to say for sure - and it depends on your priorities. I think this has the best night mode and low light camera performance of those three, and probably the best camera overall. It also has by far the fastest charging options, but definitely the worst software of the lot - Dom
