This is so stupid why not just change it on new series...in germany they also did a change with KAZE manga but they stated that this will not affect ongoing series like the Tokyo Ghoul RE manga.

It's not the end of the world for me, but it still bothers me. I don't understand why they don't do what Vertical did and just keep the logo the same for series that already had the old logo. It seems like the easiest thing to do. My best guess as to why they're doing it wholesale is because of branding issues on store shelves; having series with different logos from the same company could be bad for rep, branding, or brand recognition. I still feel it's dumb though. For the low, low cost of just about nothing, you keep the people that buy your products happy.

In regards to logos, I'd say that goes to Seven Seas and Kodansha seeing as they've never changed their logo. I do wonder if Vertical will be completely absorbed by Kodansha in the future though. It has me slightly concerned.

I was at an old book store the other day and a certian spine caught my eye. I couldn't believe it but i found the first volume of Vinland Saga. Ive wanted it for so long since you talk about it a lot but i couldn't get it since i live in a country with literally no ways of getting manga. It was totally by luck and i can't wait go read it.

New to collecting manga and received volume 9 of Requiem of the Rose king with the new logo .. right now volume 1 and 3 are out of stock so when they come back in, they’ll also have the new logo ugh. Up to this point, all the volumes I collected had the older logo. I wouldn’t mind too much if they kept the older logo for volumes that already had it and released newer volumes with the new logo. At least it would look a bit cleaner. BUT the fact that it’ll all be mixed depending on when the manga was printed is annoying

Remember the spine change back in August 05? That one was much more drastic, and I have (for instance) 17 volumes of Kenshin with the old open book+eye looking logo, and the rest of the series with the viz media rectangle logo.

Just looked around my library, this actually started last month. The first HC of FMA and the first TPB of Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction already had the new logo. Really for anyone upset, I guess be happy you're not collecting any DC collections where the spines and logos change on a whim, often multiple times across single series.

The very first new Viz manga I got I noticed the new spine... and i'm so torn. The new logo is very clean and I like it a lot, but nothing makes my blood boil more than having manga all in a series on my self and the spines don't match.

I bought those exact same volumes yesterday and I didn't notice until I saw this video. It looked familiar so I checked some of the recent volumes I had and found its the same one on my volume 1 of the fma hardcover. It looks great on that but I am a bit mad that they chose to do this with their longtime, ongoing series. At the same time I do like the new logo, especially when its white on a colored spine. I don't love the decision but at least it isn't darkhorse.

Im already suffering from logo inconsistency with my FMA volumes since I bought them from multiple different used bookstores but I can’t believe this is going to happen to all of my other ongoing Viz manga series that I did bought new at their original price. The new logo is fine and it looks nice but like the volumes have been just so consistent that to change it mid way is going to bug me until more volumes with that logo release and it’s, I guess, “consistent” again. Thanks for informing us, Swede as my reaction wouldn’t have been as understanding if I found out at the bookstore lol.

The new logo looks fine. If I was being extremely picky then I'd say the previous logo looks a little neater because it is in a little box/square. The change isn't too big of a deal, but it will certainly get on my nerves a little. I like consistency. Wonder what my One Piece collection will look like once I finish it...

I think it really depends like if you started the series like 5 volumes in then it’s not that big of a deal but if your 30 volumes and look at it on your shelf then I guess it would be annoying

I just found your channel and it's very helpful. I've never been into manga(I'm a horror movie and horror books kind of guy) but I heard about the plot of Death Note and it sounded cool. And it was YouTubing Death Note that I found your review of the all-in-one edition. Found it at a store near me for around $25 so I'll pick it up and give it a shot. I'd love to learn more about manga tho so I've been watching your videos and I subscribed. Haha, no it's fine to consider manga and comics similar because they are. Glad you're deciding to dive into the world of manga! Death Note is as good of a place to start as any, it was my first manga series as well. Since you're a horror fan, i'd also highly recommend Monster. It's more of a psychological horror series than a straight horror story, but it's phenomenal.

Feels like it's more to the point now. For me personally, what was jarring was whenever they changed the logo for imprints that weren't Shonen Jump or Shonen Jump Advanced. Like for Weekly Shonen Sunday titles (and other series that weren't part of the SJ/SJ Advanved imprint but I'm mainly referring to Weekly Shonen Sunday with this example), they used to use this image of a guy standing in a circle with a ring around it and underneath that was a word describing what type of manga you were getting into like action for instance. Back then Viz was using that older logo where it was this eye looking over a book that had Viz written on the book before they swapped to the viz media logo everybody has been familiar with for years. So after that first logo with the guy, they went and switched it with just a big fat V that was at an angle. Though I recall some titles released at this point still used that older Viz logo, more often than not newer editions/releases/reprints had the more recent viz logo. So finally (for Shonen Sunday titles at least) they wound up using an S instead that had these lines coming from the back of it indicating it was going fast maybe and you can see it like that for current Shonen Sunday releases. As for the new Viz logo, I just happened to notice that on the Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Edition volume that was released in May, the Viz logo on the spine is just the word Viz like how Swede was pointing out in the video not sure how that slipped by me when I was doing a video on it.

This makes me gladly I mainly buy digital. Regarding the Berserk spine change - The original layout was a result of Dark Horse co-publishing it with DMP, but that's no longer the case, so the DMP logo has no place on Berserk's spine. However, I think it would've been better for Dark Horse to replace the DMP logo with something else (Guts' brand perhaps?) to maintain the positioning of the remaining elements of the spine. That way, even if every volume doesn't match exactly, the newer ones would still be significantly closer to the old spine than what Dark Horse actually gave us.

Not the first time.. personally, I don't care if all my spines match up. What I go for is to get each volume in their original printing, so whatever the logo was at the time of its release is what I prefer. As long as that's the case, I'm totally fine with changing logos.

I'd say that English printing in general is lesser in spines also when it comes to placements on things (the logo being a few millimeters off and other such stuff). That's why I switched to buying mostly Japanese manga. I think the new logo is fine, but it shouldn't've come out with already ongoing series. It's also that one more tiny incentive for people NOT to buy the physical volumes. Thanks a lot for sharing, I'll keep that in mind :]

my Berserk collection is all over the place when it comes to the spines, volume 1,3,4 and 8 has DMD also written dark horse manga above then my remaining until 14 afterward i just started buying it digitally it has dark horse in the bottom. so the number placement is werid number low then high then low then high really inconsistent.

They did this in the 2000’s with Rurouni Kenshin. 17 or 18 volumes in they changed their logo from this triangle type of thing to their second logo. I like the 1st logo the best myself.

its annoying because what if you buy a bunch of volumes of a series, and some of them are new/have just had a reprint and have the new logo but some volumes haven't had a reprint so its still the old logo? Imagine a volume 12 having the new logo but volume 13 and 14 have the old logo and so forth. It could look messy on a shelf if that happens...i think i'd go insane lol

There are some newer series that have been using this logo for a while (Kaguya-sama for example). I think my biggest gripe is how they used a red Viz logo on the new Promised Neverland and Food Wars volume. It really stands out and makes it feel like a mismatch in comparison to the previous volumes. Haikyu isn't too bad since it's still white. MHA isn't too bad either, but volumes with white spines will most likely get a red logo. Considering how the OPM volumes also have white spines, its logo will also be red from now on. Considering how the spine logo is always the same as the logo on the back cover, Viz had the decency to not apply the logo change for Bleach's last two volumes (since their back cover on Amazon shows the old logo).

When it came to Berserk it's because they got rid of the co-publisher, so it makes no sense to keep them on volumes as a business. But they really did ruin the look for anyone who had the previous ones. With Viz it really makes no sense to change mid series and it would be really frustrating if the changes were more drastic like the Berserk volumes. I don't think it makes a big deal since at least the volumes line up with each other and overall looks the same.

I have not bought new manga for a while, but it does bother me that they are changing the logo mid series. Especially for something like kuroko no basket which already has 12/15 2 in 1 out.

Normally I'd be angry too, but this actually looks like a really good transition. It looks better, and it's a subtle difference. Also, it's about something I wouldn't really pay attention to it and it doesn't drastically change the format of the spine. Now, don't even get me started on Case Closed spines. Those first 20 or so really crawl up my skin because at the top it's the Shonen Sunday symbol, but then random volumes would have the Viz media symbol at the top, and then change back to SS. I don't know why, I haven't researched if they were different prints, but it's the worst case I've come upon. Another pretty bad one is the Dark Horse reprints of Gantz. I think it's volume 4 or 5 I got and the spine was just completely different. Everything shifted up, and ugh ugh ugh. It doesn't match! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Oh this bothers me so much. Im really picky about matching spines, and this might deter me from purchasing more volumes for, lets say, blue exorcist because I'm 18 volumes in with a possible set up of a final arc and I dont want mismatching spines for the last 6 or 7 volumes if it does end. Also for tokyo ghoul re. The volumes are expensive so I might sell off the volumes I own and repurchase the new spines just to have them match. Imo its okay for smaller series that are just beginning which may run a long time since they're easy to replace early on, but yeah this bothers me too much. Im glad I found a few volumes of some series that I needed to complete before the reprint (like the evangelion omnibus), thats all I can say. Thank you for making this video!

Here in Brazil the manga company Panini Mangas (the one from Italia) use a pretty simple logic when they've changed their logo: they still use the old logo (which is a squeezed logo with the "Panini Comics" logo on top) with series that begun the serialization with the old one. We have many examples that still use the old logo like Berserk and One Piece. They've made a new logo (which is more outstretched) and only series licensed later using it, like Innocent, Vagabond, Pluto, Ajin and other series. This is pretty simple, but I think the manga publishers in the US don't care for it, because I've already saw many examples of title collections with logo changes in the middle of it.

The changing logos bothers me, but it started to bother me the most when I look at my hundreds of English manga volumes and then look at my almost 1000 Japanese volumes. The Japanese logos always stay the same whether its an old logo for the magazine that series was running in or even if it's been put in a totally different magazine that the series started in. So to me it's crazy that western publishers can't keep the old logo that's still their own brand while the Japanese publishers keep logos that are 10 years or older on long running series or logos from a totally different (or defunct) magazine that it was first published in that could actually cause misunderstanding's in readers who might think a series is running in one magazine but its actually changed to another.

Doesn't bother me, what kinda does is having volumes from different publishers or even languages of the same series lol, but man it bothers me too to spend extra on having everything be the same, i have that case with Berserk, where the first volume is from a spanish, long gone publisher and the rest are from a mexican publisher. I can get the first volume from the mexican one but i don't wanna pay more just for a pet peeve haha. Currently i'm really struggling with the Sandman series, where i'm missing volume 9 of the hardcovers launched here in Mexico, but can't get it anymore unless i pay extra for it, i casn import the english soft cover from Amazon, but it's actually around the same price and well, it's in english (which i prefer but, it's different) and it's not hardcover...

InsidiousSwede For the white spines I prefer that the new logo should be printed in black not in red because it does not really bothers me too much since the old logo has a black border and a white background. For example, on Food Wars!, the first 23 volumes have that old logo, then the 24th has that red new logo on the spine. From the old logo (black text and border on the white background) to the new logo (which has the color red for the white spines), the new logo printed in red really stands out to me. This is just my opinion, though.

They own the company. They can do whatever they want. Even if they "just feel like it." This is such a tiny nitpick. if they want to update their logo then its going to have to be implimented regardless of where their book series are currently at.

I hate when companies do this! Just keep it the same for current series, and change it for new ones. It's not that hard!
