Personally that s why I like the England NT (as a Romanian). Feels like the most relatable of the major nations with that hope of “maybe we win this time, look, we aren’t losing to teams like Iceland anymore…nah, not this time. But look, next time the final is being played at Wembley, surely now…oh, it was so close, just a penalty loss in the final, fuckk”. The fact that there is always a genuine chance for them to win yet they haven’t done so since 1966 is insane to me, feel like they deserve to get a trophy too. Then again, this time we did qualify so fuck everyone else, go Romania!🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴

I'm Finnish. I have nothing against England, it is a lovely country, and you have a skilled national team. But good lord are some of the fans, which i presume to be a very vocal minority, absolutely insufferable. Arrogance, entitlement, disrespect towards other nations, hooliganism, you name it. This is not helped by the fact that the internets primary language is english so one will see more England fans being fools than of any other country. Personally i understand "it's coming home" being ironic, but not all England fans seem to do so. It's such a shame as i would look England as a sympathetic side to root for otherwise.

The English media is the issue, not the national team. Anytime a foreign team does well against England there is never praise given to the opposing side, only excuses for the poor performance of the England squad. Almost like it is impossible to accept that any foreign side is better. No, it must have just been a poor performance for the squad.

There was another thing just before the same match done by English media ( the Sun) ads with Rashford and another with Walker. "Ahead of the World Cup meeting between England and France this evening, they have placed an ad near major landmarks in Paris to warn the French that they are about to be knocked out. It features hilarious puns such as 'it's Gaul over' and some badly translated French phrases. It has been about as well received as you would expect, both by France and England fans." As a portuguese, I don't dislike England nor the National Team, but I do dislike most of your media, and I do think they have somewhat of a responsability in how people behave. The english media always hypes things up in a similar way the american media says "we're the best country in the world". And btw, the trashing of the streets is not something that only happens when there's football matches, I feel like it's culture by now, like tourism plays a part in everyone hating you guys, at least every summer here in Portugal, especially in Algarve, there's always issues between the police and young english man because they tend to break windows, cafes, chairs, etc. I do have to say though, the older english people who come here, and even choose to retire here, tend to behave.

When you read "we hate your fans" it resonated with me. You see, I'm from Croatia. Very touristy country mind you. And we are Balkan ppl meaning not posh by any standard. But. When you go to quaint Dalmatian town and hear a rowdy bunch, it's most likely English. When you see someone pissed to the point of hurling in the same kind of street - yup, prolly English. Someone filmed a person defecating at1 in the morning in front of someone's door. Ends up on morning press portals. Heavy British accent. I know it's a minority of you guys. But it's very vocal. Locals in Dalmatia openly hate young British tourists. Do you blame them?

As an Englishman my answer to "Do you blame them?" is simple. Absolutely not. I completely understand it and in these regards our nation needs to accept, our drinking culture is very unhealthy and a source of shame. I feel it is changing somewhat though with the youngest adults, as their drinking culture is seemingly improving. The aim no longer seems to be to get absolutely smashed. They seem to have a degree of respect for the need to respect the negatives of alcohol. It actually took me until my 30's, and an eastern European girlfriend, to really take stock of idiotic my lack of moderation was.

It's the English drinking culture in general that is our issue. Qatar WC was the only time in the history of the competition where an England fan wasn't arrested, and we can't pretend like the key factor wasn't the alcohol ban. Me and my mates booked a villa in Croatia last summer and at the end the host said her Mother wanted her to reject our booking when she saw we were a group of 9 English people, she was worried we'd trash the house. Which we didn't, and she apologised for her mother's prejudice.

I do sympathise with that lady, thanks to the appalling behaviour of too many English people, but that just increases the responsibility of the rest to behave better and change perceptions. I remember going on a preseason tour of Belgium (I'm an Everton fan), and we arrived at the hotel between staff shifts, so there weren't many people around to book us in or make sure rooms were ready. The hotelier was very fearful that a coach load of English football fans would give him trouble, but by the end of the week we'd become such friends that he gave us a crate of embossed beer glasses to take home and hoped he'd see us again the next year. It really doesn't take much effort.

If you take football hooliganism, it goes on in France, Italy, Russia, Poland, Spain and other countries around the world (e.g. Mexico and Argentina fans were fighting each other in a recent WC, it got almost no coverage). When it happens with other countries (except maybe Russia… geopolitically that’s quite interesting) it’s comparatively swept under the rug. The last euros the outpouring of hate against England, not just to the fans but to the team too, was also disgusting and it rarely gets called out. This all reminds me of the ‘it’s ok to punch up’ dynamic, but England are in no way a superior position. As a fan looking out it feels like punching down.

Listen. I have just started the video, so be advised that what I say may be addressed in the video. But this is my take. I am an American, and our country gets hate in our direction, although for slightly different and similar reasons. The different reason is because we call it soccer and have many other sports more popular in our country (yet other countries do as well but don't get the hate) and thus they think we don't respect the sport enough. But that I think is more of a tool/outlet for expressing anti Americanism. Why? Because, whether you like America or not, the USA is the big dog in the world. The dominant nation. And yes, sometimes we Americans go a little overboard in our patriotism. But we have been repaid by hate that goes way beyond balancing that out. On the balance of the good vs bad a World Hegemon does in history, the US is very good as a World Hegemon. Now why do I mention that? Because I think that this dynamic, of using soccer/football as a tool/outlet for hate against the US because of the US' status and perceived arrogance, applies in some ways to the UK, England specifically. Why? Because before the US, the UK was the top dog in the world. The UK, especially England, had this sense of being a nation above other nations (not in the racial sense like certain others, but in the "our combination of power, democracy, accomplishments etc make us different from other nations). I mean the US originally was part of the British Empire, so maybe makes sense. Of course, the UK hasn't been the top dog in the world like the US is now, in about a century, so that hatred about that is a little bit subsided. But even with that, the UK has a legacy that makes it like the US in thinking its above other nations, and even today is one of the top powers in the world. That I think provides the foundation. But of course, the thing that makes people go into overdrive in disliking England in soccer/football, is the fact that England is historically HEAVILY underachieved, for a nation that is one of the biggest, wealthiest in Europe, and the birthplace of modern soccer/football. Yet the way the fans act, you know that if England EVER win, you'll never hear the end of it. It's like you constantly hear about how great England are, yet in history, England has made a grand total of 1 WC final, 3 WC semis, 1 euro final and 3 euro semis. For comparison, Germany has made 8 WC finals, 13 WC semis, and 6 euro finals, 9 euro semis. When you see this, I think most people think that England fans should be extremely humble about big upping their players. Even now, with I think England fans actually being more humble, I root against England in soccer/football. And that is saying something. I am an American of German and Chinese heritage, yet in basically all aspects, I favor the UK over Germany. I feel more kinship with the UK, like their foreign policy more, and just like their country more. Soccer/football is the ONLY thing I root for Germany over England in. Now with that being said, even understanding the underlying reasons for England hate (part resenting England's powerful place in the world, part being perplexed at historically England fans being arrogant despite being HUGE underachievers, and part not wanting to never hear the end of it if England wins), the anti England hysteria has I think gone too far. Most England fans are well aware of their past poor performances, and if anything expect something to go wrong, and like to take the piss at themselves and their team. And maybe in the 2010s England genuinely had a poor team for big European nation, but since 2020 (2018 was a lucky draw), England have genuinely been a top 4-5 team in the world. So people saying England always suck are wrong. All I want is people to be honest about some of their motivations behind lashing out at the US and England/UK, but also for England fans to not make us hear it for the next 70 years if they ever do win a tournament

@@AW-zk5qb I think it is easy to focus on those who demonstrate arrogance, and it is then all too easy to project that on the rest of us, like me, an England fan. I can feel comfortable singing “ Football’s coming home” because I know the lyrics- one line says we fans know “we’re going to throw it away”-it is an English joke told to ourselves that we’ll probably lose, but let’s have fun dreaming. I can understand why others think this is arrogant, when its intent is exactly the opposite. I accept however there are those who sing it arrogantly. England’s empirical past was nothing at all to be proud of, and on that score we should be ashamed, but that’s another story.
@AW-zk5qb
@AW-zk5qb 6 ай бұрын
@@Nick.Martin. true. I might also say that the "it's coming home" might get other nations' fans angry for a different reason: the idea that England winning the trophy means that football is "coming home." As in the England is the home of football. Now in a technical sense it is, because it created the rules for football. But I think that some people take it as: the English think they are the owners of the sport itself, when you have at least 5-6 nations that are historically better at the sport than England. This is speculation on my part. I'm not really bothered by it, but I'm trying to infer that. But again, and I am speculating and bringing in other things, this might have to do with the nation above others or nation among nations. Honestly, besides the USA and UK, even though almost all nations have patriotism, almost all of them view themselves as nations among nations. USA and UK I believe often view themselves as above. And honestly, through accomplishments, power, and some genuinely good things (for the time), there is an argument. I think the "football's coming home" chant grinds their gears, because say an Italian, German, Spaniard etc is thinking "England fans should just consider themselves one nation among other nations, not the custodians and spiritual owners of the sport." This could be a reach, but just thought I'd throw that out there. And totally get the point about projecting. I think everyone needs to understand that in ANY nation, there are people who are arrogant and people who are not. Maybe when we make general statements, we mean what a larger portion of a population of a nation believes than another nation. As in if say 30-35% of Americans or Brits believe that their nation is above others, basically no other nation has even that amount of people who believe their nation is unique and above others. I don't want my next statement to come off as arrogant, because I know nations are made up of people, good and bad, and no one has a birthright to being the best, but as an American, I honestly expect my nation to be the best in any sport that it cares about as much as other nations. Meaning the idea that the US could care about a sport as much as another nation and not be the best is hard to wrap my mind around. I always wonder about an alternate reality in which soccer/football had been the top sport in the US from the 1800s

@@AW-zk5qb That song was written in 1996, the year England hosted the Euros. That’s what was meant by football coming home. It wasn’t about winning it but hosting it. This is what has been lost since. Our misfortune here is that it was a song with a catchy hook, simple and fun to sing in a crowd. If it had been crap, none of this nonsense and misunderstanding would have occurred. Oh how I wish! Nowadays mind you, we prefer to sing Sweet Caroline, which is also fun to sing as a crowd. That song has nothing to do with football at all, and makes no claims we’re going to win or if we’re a good team . It is about entertainment, enjoying and adding to the atmosphere and that’s all. I believe “Football’s Coming Home” was just about entertainment in a similar vein as Sweet Caroline. If the lyric was “Football’s Fun To Play” I think we might still have sung it because of the tune! I agree, if you’re saying in the end we’re all individuals, and that every country has good and bad. As to thinking we are or were top dog, I believe that nearly all Brits would agree we’re just not that any more and probably (almost certainly) never will be that again. Most of us know we’re in decline. Just to add, if you look at the winners, it is usually a country’s population that is an indicator of who wins. I believe, of the historical footballing loving nations, Brazil is the largest, then Germany, France, Italy etc. if we played as the UK, who knows how different football history might have been simply because of population size. I’ve no doubt if the US was a football nation, it would have dominated. Thanks for reading.

I also find it hilarious how people don’t give Southgate his flowers for what he has done first final since 66 and first semifinal since Southgate played and yet the team always is a favourite yet still disappoint. My issue is this complete ignorrance, almost disdain for anything in the football world outside of England - whereas there's very little English about anything in your own league: your clubs are foreign, most players are and much of the income comes from abroad too (broadcasting, merch). But because your league is of this very high level, you automatically assume your national team is as well - but it's above average at best. This, on top of being hardly aware of the football countries around you, creates both literally and figuratively an 'island mentality' that you must be the ones to win everything and then are surprised when you don't. Plus, youse can't manage mainland European beers and that's where astonishment turns to aggression. In general, I don't see the added value of alcohol at a sporting event (the contradiction of it alone....) but because of the English, I'd be in favour of a total ban. So, be more open and respectful about other teams and other countries and when you visit them: behave. Don't slip back to colonization-mentality and act as if you own the fekkin'place.

@@spime93 This is going to be long so strap in. There are many different types of football. There's Rugby football. There's Gaelic football. There's Aussie rules football. But there's only one original. One that professionalised first, formed leagues and associations etc. We don't change the names of other types of football. To do so would be to delegitimize them. It would be arrogant. They're all equally types of football and they can all share the name. Every country has it's historic internal divisions. In America the big one is race. In Britain it's class. Class is how you discriminate against people who look the same as you. Football is the working class game in Britain. The only people who will call it soccer in Britain are the upper classes. So by calling it soccer you're unwittingly taking a side in a historic divide. The reasons for this go back to the amateur professional split. I can go into more detail if you'd like but this is long enough already. Thirdly, and this may just be me, but I'm offended on American's behalf. Back when football was being introduced to America your higher ups decided that regular American's couldn't get their heads around more than one type of football. Like the rest of the world can. As a Dane, I've always been kinda a neutral towards the England fans, sure they have done some disasterclasses, but I've never had an opinion on it, until Denmark met England in the euros 2020. I was watching the game from Denmark on a big tv screen with thousands around me and some of my friends. And since Eriksen had already fainted in the tourney, we kinda played in pride of him, so when thousands of fans sang the national anthem of the first semi final Denmark had been in since 1992 and the entire Wembley stadium booed us, it was just so disrespectful and I who was a neutral towards the England fans before had lost all of my respect to them. We had played such a great tournament, and it felt like the whole nation was joined together for the fist time in many years. There was also the big fight that took place after the match was over between the England fans and the travelling Danish fans. There were kids and men and women that were getting harrassed, violently beat up and so on. And then nothing happened after all of that. I only saw two videos before being to disgusted to keep watching them, but from what I saw and the reports after it was not just a fight, it was a fight that never was necessary, and England had even won the game which imo was very unfair and not the right choises taken by the ref. Let us reminisce... Euro 2000 Portugal 3 - 2 England England is kicking our ass. English fans are having a laugh. But then... then Figo's thunder bastard from midfield kicked off the epic comeback from 2-0 down. English fans cursed the name of Portugal well into the night. Euro 2004 Portugal 2 - 2 England Portugal win on penalties. The most epic back and forth of all time. Rooney broke his foot. Beckham launched a pen into orbit. Ricardo saved a pen with no gloves. Eusebio nearly had a heart attack on the sidelines. Ricardo scores the winning pen. England eliminated. WC 2006 Portugal 0 - 0 England Portugal win on penalties, again. Ronaldo headbutts Rooney in pre-match gamesmanship. Rooney stomps on Carvalho's bolas. Rooney gets a red card. Ronaldo winks. English lose their bleeding minds. Ronaldo scores the winning pen. England eliminated. 3 of the most exciting matches I've ever seen. 3 great England teams swept aside by 3 great Portugal teams. Hope to meet England again in the final of Euro 2024 and continue the tradition of eliminating our oldest ally. About England fans. During Euro 2004 in Portugal, the England fans were fantastic. They drank, they partied, almost no violence. They made fools of themselves by swimming in the fountains of Rossio Square while other England fans pissed and puked in those very same fountains. It was most undignified. But when all the English left after losing to Portugal, they took the party with them. They were missed. Cheerio, lads. See you in the final. Venha vinho!

IEngland had recently failed to even qualify for USA 94. A year earlier, the far right had got an England friendly in Dublin abandoned. To follow England in the mid 90s, for reasons on and off the pitch, was embarrassing. England weren’t expected to do much in that tournament. And the song acknowledged this harsh reality. To be honest, it's not just people abroad, I think a lot of people in England hated the England (men's) team from 2006-2018, for just being rubbish. I'll admit I wasn't too fond of them myself, until they started playing a bit better. The issue is that even when England are playing well and getting to finals etc, there are still plenty of people, including England fans who dislike the team. That is the bit that is harder to understand. I think the issue with the media is down to the tabloids really, because the tabloids are among the most popular newspapers. The tabloids are also full of shit, so basically they just publish a load of rubbish whenever England are playing at a major tournament, and because they are so widely read, many people believe it. The bit about fans is odd as well, because I'm surprised that there are some people out there who dislike England fans more than their own. England fans are pretty bad, but I'm pretty sure football fans in Eastern Europe and Italy are worse for things like racism, being pervy, throwing bags of piss at other fans and stabbing them in the arses with knives. It's not that we just focus on the bad behaviour of England fans, it's that we no longer focus on the behaviour of fans in other countries.

I have a theory as to why England fans tend to behave this way and it goes far deeper than what the usual discussion is. For me it ultimately boils down to class. Patriotism or nationalism has a very complicated history in England and it’s something that’s been very frowned upon in polite society for decades now. In his 1941 essay ‘England Your England’ George Orwell wrote this astute paragraph: "In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God Save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box." The ‘intelligentsia’ he is describing here is quite an outdated term, in a modern context it’s more common for these types to be called ‘Metropolitan Liberal Elites’ but obviously where it’s aged well is that these types whether they are from the 1940s or the present still have similar upbringings mostly privately/oxbridge educated who go in to work in big institutions like media, government etc. Juxtapose this with the stereotypical England fan who are normally working class you already see a huge culture clash. Take a nation like Italy as an example, it doesn’t tend to have a complex relationship with patriotism and it’s actually very common to meet incredibly patriotic Italian citizens regardless of class as it’s completely normalised, you see the flag fairly often. Now this is a nation which still has a severe problem with hooliganism in the domestic league yet it somehow doesn’t rear its ugly head in international games. Now my theory is that when England play these tournaments it’s finally an excuse for working class people to actually feel proud of their nationality without being smeared as some kind of reactionary backwards thinking troglodyte by sections of what Orwell coined the English intelligentsia (MP Emily Thornberry publicly shaming a family from Rochester on social media for having an England flag hanging on their house immediately comes to mind) because when it’s a tournament like the World Cup or euros it’s totally normal to see English patriotism whereas it’s very unusual to see an England flag any other time of the year. This isn’t the case in Scotland or Wales either where you’ll see patriotic displays in both regularly. So in conclusion I do think that what we see from England fans tends to be suppressed pride which unfortunately comes out every two years in a very problematic way. I have no way of knowing this for sure but I do think if patriotism was a lot more normalised in England perhaps it would be different?

I went to watch England v North Macedonia Euros qualifier at Old Trafford and sat in the row in front of me was an entire family of Indian heritage, from grandparents in traditional clothing, westernised parents all the way to young excited kids in England shirts. They were all loving it. It made me think maybe the perception of watching England is changing and people from different backgrounds now feel it's a place they can come to.

But the most troubling towards other guests and staff and the rooms where always english people. We had a special routing that when a english person left a room we check the room fordamage and 99% of the time the room was damaged broken. Or the people inside where drunk and drinking against the rules sleeping in hallways etc etc. At this moment we put other nationalities in front of english people..

Hot take but I’m a bit sick of the rest of the world pretending their 💩doesn’t stink then accusing us of arrogance, though to be fair the fact the relentlessly mediocre national team still has a fanbase is a bit of an indictment on the public. Why waste your time and money on an overpaid team that doesn’t care, run by an FA that doesn’t care to support a competition that hates you. Get some self respect.

I think under investment in English football since winning the world cup and the premier league has blocked Ennglands chances of major tournament success.Since the 80s with Linekar Gascoigne Pearce the next players that did come along would have done it if the premier league never happened.Pressures from clubs intensified for more success, more money,more players abroad and coaches.The self interests of the prem overlooked the interests of the national team,players included.We never produced any great English coaches since Brian Clough who to this day amazes me he never got the job of England manager.But for all those reasons is why England never had repeated sucesss of 1966

As a Romanian I actually like the England NT, have supported them for the past 3 tournaments (because we haven’t qualified for any of them so I had to find someone else, used to support Italy at previous tournaments but then they haven’t qualified either lol). Sure their fans cause quite some trouble (way better than it used to be but still not ideal, sometimes they are also discriminated against though like at the 2022 CL final) but I do feel like it is the more relatable country out of the major nations with this constant hope of winning something that never gets realised and I can definitely take the “It s coming home” chant as a joke with a grain of hope, I ve been trained by so many years of laughing at Becali (FCSB, formerly Steaua s owner which is the team I support) doing outlandish predictions that fail to become reality so I can take some Englishmen getting hyped for tournaments lol, I rate the self-depreciating “but what if…unless..🥺” hope of it all. I mean, I can be like “Florinel is the superior Coman over Kingsley, he s the only one that scored directly from a corner” too, doesn’t mean I believe it, hell, Coman will probably not even play that much at the Euros despite the massive season he s had for us (but the fact is true, he did score from a corner kick some years ago in a derby against Dinamo). The fact that you all haven’t won anything in this long is honestly mad given how you were always around there as one of the top nations, feel like in some ways it must be worse to support England than a lower national team like us because in our case you don’t have the expectation or even the hope of winning but with England you always look at the squad and feel like “come on, this team definitely has a chance of winning, don’t they?”. I also think that the current squad is fairly likeable, as for Southgate, for the longest amount of time I thought you all have been really harsh on him given his massive results (first Euro final. Ever. Lost on penalties at that. Yeah the penalty against Denmark was probably a dive but still. Semis at the WC 2018, easy bracket be damned. Quarter loss to France due to a missed pen in 2022. Before him y all were losing to Iceland ffs) and probably still are but the fact that he s been ignoring Tomori is a bit insane ngl and I presume you have a point when it comes to weak football being shown (think that at tournaments you ve been fine though). Then again, Greece and Portugal played like shit too and they won this tournament in the past 20 years. Hell, we, Romania have been playing like absolute shit and we won our group undefeated. Ahead of Switzerland. We got 4p in the matches against them. You know, the team with the almost invincible throughout the whole club season Granit Xhaka in midfield? When you hear that you think we ve been insanely good. We weren’t. We literally drew a match to Belarus and almost the second too. The first Swiss match we ve scored twice in 3 minutes at the end for the draw and Puscas didn’t even mean to pass the ball on one of them. But results are what is remembered. Which is why I am strangely hopeful for us this year but I digress. In the end, let s all get behind our teams, hope for fair refereeing and enjoy a great tournament. I won’t be supporting you lads this time primarily because we re in it of course but I have still predicted you to win, I think and hope you will get over the hump eventually as you deserve to celebrate a trophy too
