Barca have themselves to blame on FDJ's contractual situation. FDJ took a massive deferral of wages (he lowered his €14m-per-year salary to €3m during 20/21 and €9m in 21/22, so that's €16m reduction across 2 years (over 50% reduction in those 2 seasons)) to help Barca's FFP position during Covid, only for the club to stab FDJ in his back and pressure him out of the club the second his wages needed to be paid back. FDJ naturally didn't want to leave his dream club, and just as importantly refused to leave without getting paid what he was legally owed. Barca have since continuously leaked to the media how FDJ is causing them issues. But FDJ is simple getting paid what he was entitled to and should have got paid previously, except he graciously deferred the payment for a few years. Barca can simply pay back the money he's owed, and he's probably far more likely to leave, but obviously Barca don't want to pay his money. Who's really at fault here?!

Flicks Barca is much less positional and I think that will lend itself to De Jongs playstyle. I see him playing in that double pivot role and carrying the ball forward, breaking lines and linking with the overloads in the center of the pitch. All prior Barca teams he has played in used positional play with 3 midfielders and that just never worked for him. From what I’ve seen from Flicks Barca this year, I think he could suit the system really well. As long as he can return from the injury well

His performance started declining when Busquets left and he was the only midfielder who was left to defend. The reason why he could not succeed as defensive midfielder is because look at Barca's midfield these past few seasons and how they were played. Idk if it's the players or the coaches but their performance without the ball was underwhelming. They don't know how to cover each other off the ball which is very important. You can't put all that on Dejong. Even small teams were better at covering one another off the ball. I don't have any problems with him trying to retain his wages and not earn less. My problem is he's saying no to leaving the club but also uninterested in contract talks. You can't say you want to be here and then just let your contract run down . Rn he doesn't deserve more than 15 per season . He's currently on 35 mil. I don't see why both parties can't come to an agreement that would favour everyone. Instead of wiping off a whole 20m off his wages why not offer him a 5 year contract. His remaining two 35m wages plus 45 million for the remaining three years. That's 115 million in total. If you divide that by 5 you get 23 million a season. That's still a very good salary. I think if he's given the Modric/#8 role he'd be much better in a 3-man midfield, since he can't handle the double-pivot load. When Kessie was signed he was the 6 and De Jong played much better (and barca won the league). De Jong is really good defensively, Koeman played him at CB a couple times and he did well so he needs the defensive responsibilities since there's better suited players in the attack. But Flick only plays a double-pivot, so it's probably best for FDJ's case to move on from Barca

Correction: He's the highest earner for Barcelona and La Liga but yes he hasn't played since April and Barcelona fans have started to turn on him amid the injuries. Frenkie De Jong is a good player but his time at Barcelona is running out and the board are willing to sell him. The issue is, no clubs are willing to match his current wage unless he takes a massive pay cut and given his injury record, Barcelona have their hands tied in De Jong until his contract expires.

I think de Jong is an amazing players with an amazing skillset that could really benefit the team if hansi flick knows how to use him well. With the high pressing strategy, the defending midfielders go much higher up the pitch, and that's something he could use to his advantage, being a high-pressing defending midfielder who carries the ball to pass it in-between the lines while yamal and raphinha run to the centre of the pitch to unbalance the team. Oh my my. Maybe his prime is about to come, and as a dutchie and a culer, i'd love him even more

FdJ still has the same core attributes. At Ajax, he was used as a Deep Laying Play Maker. One half of a double pivot paired with Lasse Schone, who offered the stay at home defense and steel whenever FdJ ventured forward. He had the same penchant to hold the ball, entice markers to press him, then wiggle his way out of said press.... why wasn't he a problem at Ajax while still having high numbers for time on the ball, as you highlighted? Ajax had complementary profiles and movement from players ahead of FdJ. Since his transfer to Barca, he has been used in many MF roles... rarely often as the tempo setting DLPM in a double pivot (Xavi started using one in the 2023-23 season). I'm stoked to see how FdJ fits into Flick's more vertical and direct Barca compared to the slow, rigid Barca tactics he's been part of since his move here.

De Jong is the type of player i describe as "just good enough for their team". You'll struggle to find a bad match but you'll also have a hard time finding more than a handful of great matches. Not terrible enough to get criticized but not spectacular enough to be praised.

he's quite decent and consistent when he isn't struggling with injuries/fitness, i think he is his best as a holding midfielder and as the guy who builds up from the back and connects the defense with the midfield well. Though such roles aren't "spectacular" in the ways people define that word. I think he'll come good under Flick.

Weird. Just before his injury at the clasico he was really consistent every game. I remember Barca fans praising him every match and waiting for him to come back during his first injury. He was really consistent last season before the injuries. I really wonder if he’ll end up having a proper role under Hansi Flick with a system as Pedri as an 8 and Olmo playing as a 10 together since De jong is better playing with a proper dm and as a double pivot.
