What is this obsession with Martial and his time at United?? The Henry comparison is more of a social media thing, not any real comparison. They both started at Monaco, and there ends the comparison. I have a soft spot for Martial. Just look at the state of this club and the forward line he's been involved in. During his time, he hasnt always played the centre forward. This is the most important point. Of his 8 seasons here, I'd say he had the responsibility of the main centre forward 3/8. When he's played out wide, he's always given an acceptable return, between 7-12 goals. And 2/3 seasons he played as a fully fit striker, he got 17 and 23 respectively. The game has also changed over the years, where wide forwards are almost more important than the strikers in some teams. Who and what kind of manager did we have in these key early years - Mourinho, who was much more interested in Martial, running backwards than what he was doing going forwards. Not to mention buying Alexis to take his spot when he was in his best vein of form under Mourinho. Martial has 63 goals in 209 apps, and Rashford has 78 in 255. Both have been let down badly. By comparison, Mahrez had 45 goals for City in five years where they basically won the league every year. Grealish has 11 goals in 3 yrs, again for a well-oiled team, top of the league. Martial and Rashford (I'm not even a big Rashford fan) have had to carry United during their worst era. If those two hadn't contributed the way they have scored the goals that they scored, just where would this club be without their contributions. The club is not well run, this is clear to all. As I said in the comments, Martial has been no greater flop than any other player signed during his time here, Fellani, Falcao, Pogba, Sanchez, Di Maria, Cavani, Maguire, Shaw, Antony, Fred, Mata, Sancho. Martial has given us far greater moments than all these players. He's not perfect. He has his faults, but a failure is a very harsh label because who has truly excelled at United.

I think Martial also suffered what a lot of Man Utd forwards suffer from: No service. I think injuries still would have ruined him but he would have had more G/A. I remember back in the days of Lukaku that he would get less balls into him than other Big 6 forwards, and I’ve seen it with all of our strikers since (latest being Højlund. Happy he scored against Villa). Along with the litany of problems at Man Utd, not creating chances for their forwards needs to be looked at urgently.

I thought he was going to kick on after his incredible 19/20 season then injuries and the arrival of Cavani and Ronaldo a season later ruined him. In hindsight, Mourinho was willing to sell Martial for Perisic and Joel Glazer refused and when Ole arrived he got a new deal. Guess Mourinho was spot on again because since the pandemic, Martial has failed to score 10 Premier League goals and his loan to Sevilla was a disaster class. 9 years at Manchester United and not even close to living up to his true potential bar some moments of brilliance. We should have cashed in on Martial in 2018.

I feel that currently, United should play a 4-4-2 with Martial and Højlund as the front two. I think it comes down to several things all combining to a bad situation: 1. The prize tag at the time was seen as huge and ManU media put a lot of pressure on a young person who never really had had that pressure put on him, not even in the youth french teams. He most likely wasnt ready for that. 2. Giving him the nr 9 just to yank it away from him a year later to please Zlatan. This probably put some wrenches into his mentality, he maybe even felt betrayed, and this might impact his play, as he became more stationary from 2016 and onward which is shown in the defensive numbers being very bad. 3. He is a one trick pony. Even when he gets to play in his best position (centre forward) he tends to get the ball wide, dribbles towards the goal and tries to bend it in. Similar to Robben and Ribery, but not patient or diveres enough to beat PL level defenders regularly. The one really good season he had was when he was put as a centre forward, rather than a winger type forward, where he didnt had to do all of the work before shooting. Before and after that season he has mostly been used as a wider option to compensate a slower, bigger center forward, rather than himself being the centre forward (like Henrik Larsson to Zlatan in the Swedish national team or Solskjear to van Nistelrooy in the 2002 ManU). 4. A lot of coaches and no real feeling of security. Since he joined ManU, he have seen 5 different managers and their coaching teams, and only one gave him a fair chance and believed in him, which is where we see his best seasons. 5. Injuries. A lot of them. Not Wilshere levels, but still a lot. There are probably more reasons than this, but these are the ones that are easy to show in text. He should probably had been loaned back to Monaco for one more year, then moving over to the UK and try to get a place in the team or on loan in the PL. Media, club politics and a lot of bad coincidences in a short amount of time probably gutted his mentality. Its clear he aint enjoying football since some time back, and he is not the same happy footballer as he was in Monaco.

IMO what ruined Martial was: A) Money & Ego: That's what drives him not the will to be the best, too many young players are told from a young age "your great" or "your special" & it goes to their head. This ruins them not only in football but in life e.g. Michael Owen someone my brother works with did some painting & decorating at his home, when he was talking to his misses about the job Owen through a fit & was screaming at him calling him every name under the sun because he spoke to his misses. Another TAA trying to convince a pregnant married woman to cheat on her husband & have sex with him because he wanted to have sex with her. Tell a kid their special & better then everyone else & give them money & most turn into monsters. B) Its a Job: Most footballers actually don't like football their just using it too get money, I bet (judging from his actions & attitude) Martial doesn't like football. He's just another kid that happened to be good at it & sees it as a job rather then a passion. C) Rashford: This works both ways as when Martial was brought Rashford was still in the academy & hadn't broke onto the scene yet. When Rashford showed potential Man Utd now had a massive problem, 2 young, high potential but very inconsistent, dribble focus, purple patches, ,injury prone, Inside LW (that wanted to play ST), that needed game time & a solid structure to unlock their potential. This damaged both players development because neither were given room to grow as the next star at Man Utd (this is on Man Utd because if they had Rashford they should've never signed Martial, but the Glazor's wanted a big money signing & so they got Martial).

His injury record is a big factor which is something Vizeh seems to have completely skipped over here. Right now, you no longer see Martial go on long dribble runs like he did for that debut goal against Liverpool because Martial now avoids high intensity sprints due to a spat of muscle injuries he has suffered. That is a big reason why he seems even more ineffective now than before, he can't even do his signature runs anymore.
