They actually look more like crickets. Sounds as if a mass hatching of them happened, and the mother bird temporarily has plenty of food for herself and her chicks! That easy food supply will speed up the chick's development, meaning less time spent in the nest, and getting to fledge faster, meaning less chance that a predator will eat the chicks.
