@@Hav0k Right after I watched your review I found the competitor. Now I'm torn between the VKB Gladiator NXT Evo and the new WINWING URSA MINOR-Fighter-Joystick. They use the same gimbal, but the URSA MINOR reviewer said that the construction kindof gives way more than the Gladiator and that the buttons are iffy. The URSA MINOR is significantly less and comes already assembled. People seem to be leaning towards the Gladiator still, though, for various reasons. What's your take on the comparison of these two?
@Hav0k5 ай бұрын
@tonygantt4830 so I'm currently in the process of reviewing a pair that WW has sent me. But I'll give you a brief bit of insight. The designs are the exact same in terms of the internals. However, VKB uses fiberglass reinforced nylon for their internals, but WW uses ABS plastic. This does let them cut costs at the expense of potential durability. (I say potential because unless you have a firm grip like I do, most users will be fine.) The other important difference is that all of the hats on VKB use 4 way tact switch clusters with oush, which is a very tactile and is extemely crisp and responsive when pressed. The WW on the other hand uses 4 way nav switches with push, which makes the hats feel a little more mushy than I would like. This does not affect the overall performance of the WW stick. Finally the last thing I'll say is that the dampener on the WW switch if you remove a spring to have your left stick operate like a traditional throttle, IE: your stick doesn't return to center when using the Y or pitch axis, the stick will begin to fall forwards or backwards and doesn't necessarily like to hold it's position very well if your hand isn't on the throttle. These are the majority of my complaints with the Ursa Minor; but I will still recommend it if someone really wants to save money at the cost of the issues I mentioned. Now I've seen WW change their products based on the feedback they get. So, it's possible that the last issue I mentioned could be fixed in the future. Either way they're both great products in their own way. The VKB is just the more premium option between the two.

@Dunk19702 ай бұрын
@@Hav0k I think hard mounting or linking the throttle and the stick looks like being a must. Chasing or evading in any space game sees lots of aggressive joystick movements. I'm upgrading from the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X, which I know is a cheap setup and was my first and only HOTAS so far. Ironically, freestanding stability is the one category where the Thrustmaster wins, since they stabilise each other and you have two hands holding the one thing.

Winwing essentially made a 1:1 copy of the NXT. The Ursa Minor internals are exactly the same, down to the screw hole placements. I'm not judging, but make of that what you will. Winwing gives you the same stick in different "clothing", at a cheaper price.
@Hav0k3 ай бұрын
@@a5cent Almost. Its got some differences. I'm almost done with my review of it as I've been plugging away at it for a few months now. For one, the pincer style damper isn't as strong as the Evo. So the stick tends to "fall" forward rather than stay in place. I've tried a bunch of different things to no avail. And the hats are 5 way nav switches, which have some players to them, as opposed to VKBs 4 way tact switches with push.
@a5cent3 ай бұрын
@@Hav0k That's weird. Shouldn't the springs provide enough tension to prevent the stick from falling forward? Sorry. I'm surely a bit dense when it comes to these things 😂 You're right of course. I didn't take the buttons onto account and was thinking only about the base and how that is put together. That's because I view the grip as an accessory to the base, but I don't even know if they are swappable on Ursa Minors. I stopped by a store that had both on display and they felt extremely similar to me. I think both are fine choices. People who are looking primarily for a great deal should go with Winwing IMHO. However, I'd go with VKB because of the extension options available.
@Hav0k3 ай бұрын
@@a5cent Nah, you're fine. So, i actually removed the spring to turn it into a true throttle that remains where you place it in the Y axis, and there's a separate component that controls the dampening to control how tight it is when you move the stick. And as far as I've found, it's not nearly as strong as the VKB. It often times falls forward. Whereas the VKB will stay firmly in place. It is still a great stick and by far better than any thrustmaster or Logitech, but it does have a few issues i have concerns about.

Hey there Hav0k thank you for the incredible breakdown of this kit. In your opinion do you prefer the left hand omni stick as a throttle over a standard throttle. I ask this because I'm in the market for a new setup, and I see lots of people using the setup you reviewed in this video. In the past it was an easy choice as it was typically a stick for right and throttle for left. Anyways would love to get your feedback on this question. Thanks for your insights on VKB products. New sub here.
@Hav0k22 күн бұрын
It's a roughly tough decision cause I love a traditional throttle. But that omni throttle is so useful for translation movements (Strafing up/down and left right). I would say before I got my hands on the VKB, I was a devout hater of HOSAS. But now that I've had a chance to use them, I think they're super useful. Plus, being able to remove the spring to allow the throttle to stay in place is extremely helpful. VKB did a fantastic job with the NXT Evo and I believe it to be one of the best out there.

@@Hav0k I appreciate your response and outlook. I'm specifically asking for space Sims like ED and SC. I should have mentioned that in my first post. With that being said, would that sway your opinion one way or the other? I've also heard and read that an omni style throttle doesn't feel like it has the same full range of motion of a traditional throttle. It would also be pertinent to state that the only hotas system I have any experience with is the t160000m. A few hundred hours in ED and a few hours in SC and all of this was several years ago. Because of your VKB review along with several other reviews I've read and watched I've settled on that stick. I'm just undecided if I want to try the omni or got to a stecs. My only draw back with a stecs is that is looks like it's more suited towards a flight sim than a space sim. I really appreciate your time and expertise with this subject and for your responses. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me on a 5 month old thread. I usually just get crickets when asking questions like this.

I've used CH sticks, Logitech sticks, Saitek sticks, Thrustmaster sticks, Turtle Beach sticks, and just about every other brand of stick you can think of except Virpil and I'm not paying that much money for what I have heard lots of bad about. Standard, force feedback, force sensing, been there, done that. I hate the fact that VKB's are called "budget" sticks, even though they only very technically are. They're budget in price, but not budget in build quality, accuracy, sensitivity, configurability, and the fact that they come with replacement parts (specifically replacement springs because as we all know, springs BREAK...it's the only thing they do, other than be springy). I have the NXT Evo pro and the highest end STECS throttle and they're the best interface devices I've ever put my hands on. EDIT: Apparently I have the "man paws" because I removed the hand rest entirely :D
@Hav0k6 ай бұрын
Yeah I definitely could have used a better word to do them justice. Their build quality is definitely far better than budget given how amazing they are.
@terraphon6 ай бұрын
@@Hav0k Nah, I mean, they are technically budget sticks when you consider that they don't cost much more than most of the trash on the market today. I got the NXT EVO Premium and the STECS MAX which, together, cost under $500 and other than WinWing (which I haven't touched so I am discluding them from this comment out of fairness) there's not a HOTAS on the market under $800 that is fit to carry VKB's dirty socks. Unfortunately the word "budget", in relation to controls, has been equated with "cheap plastic garbage" because of companies like Logitech, TB, Thrustmaster, and others who make sub-par gear that either doesn't do what it claims, stops working/falls apart after a few months, or a combination thereof. VKB defies that definition, people, and Hav0k is dead right in pretty much everything he said.
@Hav0k6 ай бұрын
@terraphon You're absolutely right about that word. That's probably why a lot of people got triggered that would even suggest that they're a "budget option". I honestly didn't expect to get some of the angry comments about it.
@terraphon6 ай бұрын
@@Hav0k Yeah, it's unfortunate that the word has stopped meaning "inexpensive" for so many people and it gets misinterpreted. I'd bet a lot of the angry comments are from people who didn't watch the whole video...where you basically had to reach for a con, that's kind of a con, but not really a con, because glass reinforced nylon is strong and resilient as hell. Not as resilient as aluminum, of course, but it lasts, just like you said.

Curious how you switch between space sims and flight sims using this throttle since space wants a centering axis of -100 to 0 to +100 and flight sims want a 0-100 "stay where you leave it". I get that you can remove the spring and tighten down the cams but I'm finding it really hard to feel the zero detent without the spring's help so my ship is often still moving when I think it's centered. It's making it much more difficult to fly this way. Any thoughts?
