27:39 This scene is particularly important, and I love how they did it so it's extremely subtle. Since the body is that of an URM (United Republic of Mars) Beserker, which as Ido said is one of the most powerful battle weapons ever made (hence the original manga and anime title, Battle Angel: Alita), it is strong enough to literally kill with barely a thought. Literally, she could flick someone in the forehead and kill them from breaking their skull and sending the shard blasting through the grey matter. But the first thing Alita does? She does a little dance, balances delicately on one finger, and then, most importantly, lays gently against Ido's shoulder. She's showing him in the most significant and important way that she's 110% in control of the body.

This is by far the most accurate translation of a manga comic into live action I have ever seen. I know the comics by heart and some of the battles were basically recreated frame-for-frame. So sad it flopped when it came out, we'll probably never get those sequels.

Alita has always been a passion of Cameron to make into live action for twenty five years. I do not think he cares whether he breaks even, loses a bit, or makes a ton. He's still going to do it. He may have to release a few movies about blue skinned aliens in between to keep the boat afloat, and has said that the original Avatar is what gave him the money and SFX tech and experience to make Alita, but he is definitely going to make another. Besides, he owns the studio. No stupid investors to convince.

Imagine being a high schooler watching a subtitled anime in 1993. It's brutal, bloody, and also the best cyberpunk themed visual media you've ever seen (Though a few years later when Ghost in the Shell comes out it gives it stiff competition). Then shortly after Titanic comes out, when interviewers are asking James Cameron what his next project is, he mentions that he has bought the live-action movie rights to that anime and its source manga. But he doesn't feel that filmmaking technology is up to the challenge yet. So he's going to work on a personal project instead as practice. Years later, you find out that warm-up project meant to develop new film technologies was Avatar. But then he gets locked into making Avatar sequels and hands the film off to another competent director. And on opening night, as the movie starts playing, you see that not only is it going to be the same story, many scenes are shot-for-shot remakes of that OVA you watched so long ago. There's a scene where a dog walks onto frame. You squeeze your spouse's hand hard in horror because you know just how doomed that dog is.

Congratulations for actually knowing this film existed while it was in theaters. It was so poorly marketed the majority of the world found out about it on Netflix years later. I likely would have seen it multiple times in theaters too, if I had known that it existed. So they did not market the film. They restricted showings due to lack of interest. Then they cancelled the sequel due to poor box office. Then it blows up in streaming. But now most of the cast is too old to do a proper sequel. So any sequel will be a remake with new actors instead of a contiguous follow.

They did such a clever job with motion blur, Alita has these frames where they didn't use any on her but did on her surroundings. You see her perfectly in these frames during high action, like 25:21 When she jumps down, there is blur around her feet but none in her face. It just works really well

One thing I find curious is that it's apparently canon that Mc Teague saved the little dog by turning it into a cyborg. They even made a ten second long clip of the dog afterwards, which appears to have been released on one twitter page and more or less nowhere else. It's cute, but a surprising amount of effort for a rather obscure gesture. I can only imagine somebody on the production team just really didn't want to kill it.

It's already in the works. It's not even difficult to find information about it. Cameron has held onto the rights for Alita/Gunnm for decades knowing that to do it right he needed to do it carefully. Avatar was made in part to push the tech far enough for Alita to be possible and to fund the project. The Way of Water is the foundation funding for Fallen Angel.

All the people (not you) who seem to think her eyes are to look like an anime or manga girl need to understand even in the manga her eyes were overly large. What i find funny is, her eyes arent really THAT large, ive seen people in real life with eyes that are particularly large, and yeah its a little odd but not sure why people have issues with it.

Yes, Nova looks like a mad scientist from the 90s, because that's exactly what he is. The original comic ran from 1990-1995. The movie is a highly compressed version of the first quarter or so of the that. There have also been sequels, one of which is still running which, among other things, is showing us Alita's childhood on Mars, her parentage, how she became a cyborg, and how she became a Germanic Space Ninja.

@@thisstuffisdumb "All you Need is Kill" IS a Manga so I don't get what you're saying here. Like many Mangas and Animes it's based on a "light novel". The original was written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka 2004 and later adapted to a manga 2014 by Takeshi Obata. The movie with Tom Cruise was ok action, but as always Hollywood have to change stuff so the ending is different. If you compare these two movies I think Alita wins, it's more true to the original story and better in more ways than Edge of Tomorrow.

Alita's only looked as young as she did in the early film because she was put into a body intended for an 11 or 12 year old girl. The Berserker body adjusted her appearance according to her real physical age when she became a cyborg, roughly in her mid-20's. Also while they made her face and eyes to match her original manga appearance with the big anime eyes, it doesn't take very long for it to stop being jarring and just becomes her face.

The only thing missing in the movie is Hugo's motivation to be in zalem, in the manga Yugo/Hugo wants to go there because it was his brother's dream but was murdered with her wife trying to fly there

The cowboy was Jeff Fahey, an actor well known for his cyberpunk movie The Lawnmower Man. A literal TON of the cast have a history of niche films. Some were just cameos, like Casper Van Dien as the drug addicted motorball player that kills Ido's daughter, Greg Berger, a prolific voice actor as the annoying robot head that pays out bounties that Alita destroys, or Rick Lee that was in Ninja Assassin and Fast and the Furious as Johnny Tran. The budget for casting was not skimped on even in secondary and tertiary actors. Even a character, Jashugan in motorball, was played by Jai Courtney. He has a much larger role later in the story, helping Alita defeat a berserk Zapan.

26:20 "He looks like a villain from the 90's" Well... considering the manga and anime was made in the 90's, you're pretty spot on! You really should watch the anime OVA though, its just two episodes but they are amazing. The manga its based on goes on for longer and it gets into some pretty crazy things. the movie did a pretty good job getting fairly close to the anime's story, but with some changes and adding of some things that the manga delved into later on. But yeah the anime is even more violent, they actually show the poor dog being cut-up which was sad. But yeah Alita wiping the blood onto her cheeks is strait from that. In fact you could definitely look up the manga and read that, the story goes deep! I hope they make a second movie though!

Alita was a Japanese anime comic. Spielberg decided to make the film very accurately after the anime. The anime writer was a legend in Japan and the story is well known. Alita has the Anime eyes added by CGI. After a minute you barely even notice they are different. everything about the film was , in typical anime style, shocking, gruesome, charming, and moments of "Right ON!!!"... That martial arts exercise scene before the mirror at 15:50 is an exact replication of a filmed real Bruce Lee exercising. And yes "A girl comes along and"... sigh. It's always a woman. The best bar-fight scene in movies! (possibly only second to "From Dusk 'til Dawn) Hiyao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli, maker of "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" among other masterpieces, which you should see) said that anime picked up the huge eyes from early Disney films, which do it to make the characters cute and make sure the audience focuses on the eyes as the center of emotion. Ed Skrein (Zapan) also in Deadpool, and in early episodes of GoT as the warrior who joins Daenerys (replaced by another actor), and awesome in Maleficent 2. His last day on the set for Alita he was presented from the director with the sword. He and Keean Johnson (Hugo) played leading characters together in "Midway", also in 2019 (playing real-life historical people, dramatized movie representation) Rosa Salazar, and James Cameron & Robert Rodriguez are enthusiastic about a sequel, but Disney owns the distribution, and as we saw with "Treasure Planet" (VK should react to this old gem) and "John Carter", they have no problem with letting a good property die. It's been 3+ years, and Cameron might be able to swing it, but with no distribution or marketing from Disney, it won't get made. Like the anime OVA movie, it obviously compresses several chapters and months of the character's time into a few minutes. The plot has holes: Why was Chiren so immediately willing to help kill Alita? Just because of the body? There was a bounty on the one killing those human females. Nova ruled everything and was the most probable buyer for the body parts, so he knew who was killing them, but he also put the bounty on them? And simultaneously protected Grewishka who was running the body parts collecting... Nova was probably just playing chaotic games with other's lives as he loves to do. If her heart was so valuable and strong, why was it just thrown away? An ancient dangerous enemy just let go into the world to possibly be brought back? But then Nova could not have known that Ido would put her back together -anybody else would have taken the heart and thrown her out. Uugantuya “Ugi” Otgonbayar (Mongolian, in the US); the real life performer who did the hand-stand scene. Amazingly strong & pretty. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqSTipJ8gL6erKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnvGh6J3qLd2ipo ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL: Easter Egg - the Dog Lives kzbin.info/www/bejne/hImYfqaPrNmFqtk

this needs the sequel(s). Rodriguez says they have the material to create 1-2 more movies. however it's all waiting on the studio.....Disney, since they bought 20th Century Fox. great reaction. knew you would enjoy this one.

Alita is not an underrated gem. It's a hidden gem. It's a fantastic movie. I agree with the eyes, they were a bit too much the first few minutes but they really work well on her.

it was recently confirmed that a sequel is now in active development. Not only that, but both Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron have since sworn a blood oath to get Alita 2 made. No matter how long it takes.

So glad someone has reacted to my favorite movie!!! It is the only movie thatI have seen in the theater more than once. It has so much heart, a strong, courageous female character with a good character arc, a good story, and a strong cast. I wish this movie would be more popular; it wasn't marketed well. I doubt that we will get a sequel despite the having a cult following. Hoping that James Cameron will get to do this with the commercial success of Avatar 2.

Great reaction V, I first watched this because everyone was raving about the stunning visuals (they really are,). But once I watched it , all I wanted was two things... obviously a sequel, and also a prequel showing her time as a warrior. Great movie 👍

During action scenes or in alien environments (like the space ship) she works great. In more mundane places or when surrounded by regular people, I think she still looks weirdly out of place. But that is literally part of her character. She's not even from Earth, after all. I'm really looking forward to Alita sequels. It's probably my most anticipated movie continuation. However, I fear Alita will get turned into more mainstream trash by becoming like any other franchise.

BAA/Gunnm has been my favorite manga since the 90s, I was so hyped they finally made it into a movie and I thought it was brilliant. It's a shame American audiences didn't agree... here's hoping we eventually get a sequel worthy of this masterpiece.

This is such a fun movie with a lot of heart based on a great long running manga. I just wished James Cameron had decided to direct this himself instead of Avatar then we would have had several sequels already. Cameron literally developed both properties for about a decade starting in the late nineties until technology was advanced enough for him to start filming, at which point he picked Avatar over Alita. Later Robert Rodriguez asked Cameron if he could direct Cameron's script since he was now planning multiple Avatar sequels and would never get around to it anymore.

Fantastic movie. It's a shame more reactors don't react to this one. I know the director wants to make more Alita movies, but for some reason they haven't gotten there yet. Really hope they do, though.

They had bad luck finishing this movie at the same time as "Captain Marvel" when that was marketed as the feminist movie of its time. When this is so much more of a stong woman movie. Loving, caring, badass, intelligent, amazing family organization. This movie is perfect.

Fantastic Anime, and fantastic film too. Cameron, Landau, and Rodriguez should make the sequel. Rosa Salazar really fit the role too, she's not blonde but with the large anime eyes and her acting, it really worked and came together nicely.

This movie is aptly named, as both the "Angel" and "Battle" parts are present to the extreme, and simultaneously embodied in Alita herself. Physically, her URM Berserker body is both more sensitive and stronger than any other, while Alita has the tenderest yet most indomitable heart of anyone.

So I've been an enormous superfan of the manga Battle Angel Alita(or "Gunnm" as it's known in Japan) for the last 20+ years. I own all the graphic novels, and seeing this movie in the theater was practically a religious experience for me. I desperately hope they make another one, but even if they do, that would only be the tiniest scratching of the surface of the story of Alita, which has been going for three decades at this point. Yukito Kishiro is the author and artist of Alita, and that man is an insane genius. There are a TON of shots in this movie that are nearly perfect re-creation of panels from the comics, and that makes me SO happy. Loved your reaction to the movie, and if you ever want to dive deep into this world, the mangas are always there and they are fucking legendary!!!

It seems like you've completed a full journey. I've witnessed your progression from your anime days to now, where you're enjoying an adaptation of the Battle Angel: Alita manga. The film brilliantly incorporated elements from the Battle Angel OVA (1993), including the addition of Chiren, an original character not found in the manga. James Cameron, driven by his passion for the project, initially helmed the director's chair but later entrusted Robert Rodriguez due to his commitments to the Avatar franchise.
