About the eyes: With portraits you have to remember too that they do lose color/take on dirt which tends to be more brownish over the years so if it was copied it is easy to see how the color switched from green to brown

Particularly if they are using varnish to preserve the paint and it doesn't mesh well with the environment the picture is kept at. That's also the reason why most Da Vinci's pictures have subdues, melancholic colours (a few samples kept in more suitable environments, both out of Da Vinci's brush and from his apprentices that used the same techniques and materials, keep the vivid, vibrant colours he used in reality).

We're _supposed_ to be "the great melting pot." We're _supposed_ to have freedom of religion. In grade school, I was taught all that about America. (Admittedly, I'm an old man. That was long before the Republican Party adopted their "Southern strategy" of deliberately wooing white racists, so things have changed since then.) When we don't live up to our own ideals, we need to pay attention to that. I agree that most nations experience bigotry when they get more than just a small handful of "other" people coming into the country. But they don't all claim to be better than that. We do. So it's a big deal when we don't live up to it.

@@Emanon... No, America was supposed to be a collection of states free from the British Crown and nothing more. The modern narrative of immigration did not exist until the late 80s and for the longest time, not even all Europeans were allowed to move to the US, only Northern and Central Europeans who were Protestant. The first change happened in the the 1890s when Catholics started to make their way over to the US and were being allowed in, and even then, they weren't fully accepted until the early 50s. So nah, you can't single out America.

Some distant relatives of mine were in the order of the dragon and according to the family archives their account of what Vlad Dracula did with regard to nailing anything to anybody's head was the Ottoman ambassadors refuse to remove their turbans in his presence and so he nailed them to their heads then impaled them and left them to die. Maybe it simply takes a monster to stop a monster. From family sources I can also confirm that he was imprisoned for a while at Castle Braun. Like most noble captives he was not kept in the dungeons or anything like that. He was kept in a room lower than his proper rank as sort of an insult but was still allowed most of his other privileges as long as he made no attempt to escape. This is actually where he wins a lot of followers, young Squires and men who would later become Knights. Who actually follow Vlad back to take Wallachia. At least from our records his time at Castle Braun is what makes him see the Ottomans as the greater threat to christenedom so later needing the bigger Army, he made the only sensible deal he could. In his own screwed-up way he comes to understand that the killing of his father and brother was just politics and truly wasn't anything personal. That ultimately their bond as fellow Christians against the Ottoman hordes was more important. Technically a second cousin from my family line was arranged to marry Vlad as part of the compact for him to get the Army against the Ottomans. Our sources are unclear if the woman who is said to have throw herself from the tower believing that the castle was going to be overrun, was her or one of the mistresses. Our records only show that this marriage did not produce any children who survived to adulthood.

I ended up looking at this period of history and it's fascinating. It'd be really interested to see a series on the Hungarian Black Legion which was around at this time, and/or the succession of kings that resulted in the downfall of Hungary. John Hunyadi, Matthias Corvinus, John Corvinus, Vladislav "Very Well", and Louis II, who was mentioned in the Suleimon series (spoilers), but he's such a more tragic figure knowing what came before him and what he hoped to achieve.

Just returned from Romania. Bran Castle is ridiculously touristy and actually from what is left of the actual insides, quite cozy. It was basically a Templar castle which got bourgeoised up by Queen Maria of Romania (a pretty cool character in her own right). The only reason for Bran Stoker picking it out is that he only saw drawings of the castle when it was raining.

About Mathias's campaign on Bohemia: He could do it because he signed peace treaty with Mehmed several times. He was smart enough to realize he could not win against the Ottomans on the long run. In both cases of the pronunciation of the words Valahia and Târgoviște the latter pronunciation is the correct one: Vah-lahk-iya. In any case as a Romanian I think it's pretty nice to see there is an interest in the real historical figures like Vlad Țepeș, rather than the simplistic Hollywood trope about vampires, especially with a character like Vlad, with endless myths and legends.

In the case of Wallachia I have heard it pronounced mostly like the two mentioned pronunciations Wah-lake-E-ah and Vha-lahk-E-ah but also as Wu-Lahk-he-ah. It may be that some dictionaries didn't get their pronunciations right or it may be like Ireland where every different dialect has a completely different yet equally correct pronunciation

The point about Columbus is something I hadn't considered. I've never been swayed by the "erase him from history, he did bad things" mentality, since that's true of almost everyone from history who did something impactful - it was almost always at the expense of someone else we don't remember, but the "asterisk by their name" as ERBOH put it, is also very necessary. I'm glad the Washington Irving fairy tale version of Columbus is finally dying, but I wish people were taught alongside it the important history like this about WHY the fairy tales were a thing. Washington Irving, as I understand it, wanted kids to have historical heroes so he manufactured them, but this could be why Columbus was even considered for a fairy tale hero treatment by Irving. Realizing this was such a vital thing to the Italian immigrants who were discriminated against puts the "tear it down" crowd in a new light. I could see tearing down the statues and renaming the streets after that generation is gone, but even with the history being fictionalized, I totally understand why it would be offensive to tear those statues down. I wish we could have an openness about the evil done by the people that groups hold up without tearing those groups down, but that's exactly how openness about the heroes of many still-oppressed groups is leveraged today. (Since KZbin comments contain horrible people posting vile things on burner accounts, I'm going to just note that I'll report and mute anyone who replies with racism or bigotry, whether it's against Italian Americans, Native Americans or any other group. If you see me not responding to them, that's why.)

Regardless of what the facts may say, Vlad (to me) will always remain one of the main inspirations behind Dracula. I think people often confuse based on with inspired by. I know Dracula wasn't entirely based on Vlad as a whole, but Stoker's character was nonetheless inspired by Vlad. Case in point, some of Vlad's physical features like having a mustache, his tendency to drink blood, being of noble birth, and how Dracula is both revealed and claiming to be a great warrior earlier in life.

Funny how it's "Vlad did this", "Vlad did that", but the reality is that one person wouldn't be able to do many or any of those things alone. My point? Well, like Hitler, Vlad was certainly in charge - but he had a lot of help. That help was doing the heavy work, the dirty work. For the story to be couched in terms of Vlad's actions, it wipes out the truth. The truth is that he led a huge movement of people that were pretty much OK with that work. Huge difference. It makes these men - men. Not monsters.

Key thing i should mention is that one of the reasons vlad was abit crazy was cause his wife who he loved dearly had gotten a letter saying he was dead so thinking there was no hope she jumped to her death but really vlad was still alive and when he found out he lost his mind. Romanian pronunciation is very different from English, mainly because the vowels only have one sound, and also the special vowels ă and â, which are essentially deeper version of a. I have been to both Poenari and Bran castles and the hike up to Poenari is very worth it. Bran is very nice but filled with tourists.

Not a big problem, I mean as a romanian I wasn't bother, but the vah-lahk-iya is the right one. You can't really go with the english pronunciation for a word in a romance language. As for Targoviste, if you aren't romanian or slavic is hard to get it exactly right, having two letters that are not in the english alphabet.

Hey, I'm Romanian and yeah don't worry both Walachia ways are wrong :) it's more similar to viking valhalla :) , but who knows how they said it back in the day anyway. Targoviste was pretty good actually, but they are extremely tough Romanian words to reproduce

You did get pretty close with the pronunciation, especially for an English speaker. I think us Romanians don't really correct foreigners when it comes to pronunciation because we are just so happy and giddy that people take an interest in our culture
