@pierrelevasseur27013 ай бұрын
Before the season, I thought, if the Jays are not doing well (and unfortunately they are not), maybe cuts losses and trade Vladdy, especially if he can't reach the levels we were sold on. He wasn't the guy he was in 2021, good but not great like he was that year. Lately, he's shown that he's back. He still needs to show he's back for the rest of the season. So the only question remains is, can the Jays keep him beyond next season? Many will say, "pay him" and that's easier said than done. It's not our money and Vladdy himself thinks he's worth a certain amount while the Jays, or any other team for that matter, thinks otherwise. I believe he'll play out next season, and based on how he's playing now, he will very likely have a 2021-type season or even better. Thus, he'll probably refuse an extension and test the free-agent market. Let's say he continues at this crazy pace the rest of the season AND into next season, what would Vladdy be worth? Ohtani got $700/10 and who knows what Soto will get this off-season, maybe $500/10+. So Vladdy could get something close to that, say $400/12+, maybe $450/10 or dare I say it, $500/15. Time will tell. In the meantime, I'm enjoying his success and hopefully get the Jays back into the playoffs next year.
@alanmurr65623 ай бұрын
He only began hitting like Babe Ruth after the Jays fell out of the race for the last wild card spot! What if he can't hit like this when the team still has a chance for a playoff spot like the first half of 2024, but only after it doesn't matter anymore if they win or lose like since the All Star Break? Would you still pay him 50 or 40, or even 30 mil a year for several years?
@pierrelevasseur27013 ай бұрын
@@alanmurr6562 you say "what if". We don't know yet his tendencies. In fact, I don't think any player thinks the way you describe. Some, especially the younger ones, may put too much pressure on themselves and it affects their performance. It may be the case here but not because the Jays are out of the playoffs, more because of the too high expectations put on him. He certainly delivered in 2021 (the Jays missed the playoffs by just one game) and did great in September that year. We know since 2021 through this year, he's had two great years and two very good years. We can only surmise he will have very good years for the most part and a few more great years. All of them by the way the Blue Jays were in contention in three of his four full seasons so your argument to me doesn't hold much water. He's a valuable player, with this year, he's had 2 great years in the last 4 and someone will pay him handsomely. I think for sure $30m a year, closer or above 40, especially if next year he continues at this pace. He'll only be 26 next year too, not many free agents of that caliber and that young have entered the free agent market.
@alanmurr65623 ай бұрын
@@pierrelevasseur2701 In 2021 MLB used a juiced up ball because that is what they do when they lose fans the previous year. MLB was worried about losing many fans to covid in 2020 in that 60 game season, and wanted to make sure those fans came back, as MLB knows fans LOVE offense. That was why Vlad hit 48 home runs etc. Not because he played his home games in minor league ball parks as most people say. I admire your long response. OK in 2020, and 2021, and 2022 you make a point that all games were high leverage as we remained in contention the whole year. and even last year. But he swung at so many bad pitches those years, and let the pitchers make a fool out of him. But he was just an above average player the past two years. Not the combination of Ted Willians and Babe Ruth like this year because he has no anxieties while he is standing in the batting box.
