Wow! Thanks for posting this. What a gorgeous performance, fresh, energetic and so expressive. Love the delicate phrasing in the main themes. It also made me realize that nearly everyone today plays the whole piece mezzo forte and above, no pianissmo.

Inimitable VH. We are lucky to have multiple recordings of VH journeys with some particular Masterpieces at different stages of his life.

Insanely daring performance. Anyone know what's going on with the audio from 8:35?

The lead-in to the A Major climax is almost Hofmann'esque in its fury. Thank you.

My favorite Horowitz performance of the first Ballade is from the 9.5.1965. recital.

I wish we had a smooth 1920’s Horowitz in this too.

The Horowitz of the 40's --the decade he recorded Brahms 2nd with Toscanini, also in broadcast---daring romantic showboating.. Michelangeli's solid Apollonian reading of this Dionysian piece holds it together better. This is quasi un fantasia.

My thoughts are too--though Ray Manzarek sides with Nietzsche. I believe that simple opposition is fallacious as it does not allow for the essential dialectic. The opposition is the Apollonian in the Dionysian and the Dionysian in the Apollonian. @@hellbooks3024

I adore Horowitz but we must admit some of this is revolting.

How so? Easy to say “terrible”. What did you not like?
@gautambose
@gautambose 4 жыл бұрын
Left hand during some parts were too rushed and he got quite a lot of notes wrong and in some places over pedalling but it was good no one should call it terrible I play this myself so ik

I agree. I prefer some of his later performances. Maybe not from the seventies and eighties, but from the sixties , the 9.5.1965. Is maybe the best example. Still my favorite performance of the G minor Ballade is the Arrau Philips recording.
