I especially love the Chopin Polonaise… Cziffra is so controlled and measured, as if respectful, it’s great!

Not one of his best improvisations... he is searching here. The definitive version is "reminiscences of johan strauss" from his second LP "pages immortelles"

Mengelberg’s accompaniment makes me wish for the first time that Chopin wrote more for orchestra- the conducting style is exactly suited to him, and a perfect match for Cortot on piano!

26:39 The professor is not Ferencsik, he is György Ferenczy! He was an excellent pianist, with a taste for Chopin, Liszt and even the Baroque composers. He discovered Cziffra - together with Tamás Vásáry - as a bar pianist in the Kedves presszó.

Sadly this was tampered with, suddenly at 4:08 the piano raises by a quarter note and the scratching noise from the record is completely different.

That is likely a change when going from one side of an acetate disc to another. The entire recital was recorded in that manner and is available here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKGrYoadeNRllZYsi=-10aeQeQ7P2hFLEH
