Mind blowing, amazing interpretation, not Horowitz but not regrets at all to have the honor of having listened to this talented young man. I´d like to hear more pieces by him and know his name. And in regards to some of the remarks above, my wish is that tolerance, appreciation and respect for all mankind goes IN CRESCENDO.

Actually this is the Horowitz arrangement of the Liszt transcription, so the actual correct sequence would be Saint-Saens - Liszt - Horowitz - Danse Macabre.

The player isn't Horowitz (though I don't know exactly who he is), but this is Horowitz's arrangement (of Liszt's arrangement of Saint-Saëns' composition), hence the title.

Brilliant technique without any comprehension. No understanding of the real macabre as conceived by Liszt and Horowitz. But the clearness is really jawdropping... as if he had really practised it as an étude. The lyrical fragment at 3:33-4:04 is spoiled... there is no miracle at 5:05-5:15. Why does Sultanov’s version make me let out a tear whereas this one make me irritated? Because it is vicious practice-to gain perfection at the cost of the loss of complete understanding.
@DKSchmerber13 жыл бұрын
Liszt was a genius!!!! Imagine how he must have performed this!!!! Outstanding performance in my opinion by Tae Hyung Kim. Some would say it should be played slower, but Liszt was a rule breaker, so I think he would be fine with it. Were there only ten people in the audience? I can't believe the pitiful applause this incredible performance received.
@QueerOldDean12 жыл бұрын
First of all, I think you're confusing jealousy with disdain. At any rate, more to the point, you should check out some of the highly original compositions by Joe Hisaishi and a japanese jazz pianist, whose name I forget. I grant you that due to the collectivist nature of Asian countries, many asians lack the creative motive that is encouraged in individualistic countries, but nonetheless, to generalize them in such a manner is intolerable.

Whoever he is....nice technique, and plays the notes in a good tempo... but.... frequently looses/blurs the inner harmonies/melodies, at 3:25, 8:30 & onward, and many other places. Major-league musicians play the inner voices clearly, as part of the musical storytelling....

@giblspoink I suppose some people think music is somehow tied to the original author, and players have a responsibility to play exactly the way the author played it. But really then all you have is a bunch of monkeys, or parrots, mimicking. I think if it's at all possible, a player should own the piece they are playing. That way the piece is liberated, rather than bound by preconception.

A reminder to those who belly-ached about the piano. We're listening to a PAPER DIAPHRAM, people, NOT a piano. The video quality is poor, and we make allowances for that. Why should you think the speakers in your computer, and the electronics which run them, are doing any better job as a stand-in for a grand piano?

No doubt, great pianist. piano qualiy...difficult to judge. Personally I prefer the original Horowitz rec of 1942 which approaches more sophisticated imho. e.g.: 4:42 this passage shows the technical border of this pianist, he slows down when Horowitz (also Volodos) keep holding tempo. I'm not against rubato, but in this single case it's not appropriate. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to minimize his interpret. but doesn't proof ambivalent critcs admiration because of more interest?

I think the "wind-up toy" comment is more poking fun at racism... there is an unfair stereotype that Asian kids are all brain-surgery performers... stick a quarter up their butt and watch them dance. This unfortunately sets expectations unrealistically high. I think he was more referring to this take being inartistic crap that is more sports and exhibition than actual music... like a classical Yingwe Malmsteen... and I would tend to agree with him.

IMO Saint Saëns is no virtuoso composer (obviously). Our dear Franz? Well he is one (obviously as well), But Horowitz? He sometimes even play alternatively to suit his understandings (and he is not really a virtuoso player, although he sometimes play like a spartan). The debate between "soulful" and "virtuosity" has been lasting for quite a few years, and this somehow went sharply ugly during the recent years. While these two aspects can coexist, there are indeed some conflicts and most pianists eventually "evolves" his or her style into either one of them. ( or rather, a spot on the virtuoso-emotional spectrum) It is true that "musical" (no sarcasm) ppl will look for "soul" from a performance. But the need for virtuosity is perhaps larger than the "exquisite" demand. Quite some People like to see pieces to be played fast, this is undeniable. (Not New Age pieces tho) They want to see people playing fast, live, not turning speed to 1.5* on the VLC player. In this case, lots of people, perhaps especially those "Asian parents" (no racism here cuz I am an Asian as well) would favor virtuosity because it is visible, audible, significant, and produces you a decent adrenaline rush. Is there anything wrong about that? Perhaps so, perhaps not. A piano teacher told me that a parent that visited his classroom considered that student playing "the flight of the bumblebee" better than that playing the "les adieux sonata". He told me that the latter is way harder to control and express, while the previous one is merely used as an étude. He heaved a sigh when he tells me the story. I do agree with him... But does that make that parent wrong? It depends, it really does. That might be the musical version of "is liberal arts degree worth it". You cannot really cease this kind of debate, so there never is a right answer... But maybe the easiest answer is to let ppl to pick their own, you hate soulless virtuosity? Just step away, you hate "turtoisely" slow emotional performance such as that of Alfred Brendel or Richard Clayderman? Go listen to Lang Lang or this guy-please excuse me that I do not know his name. Why haters? The shrinking population (hopefully that was just a false sense of mine) that adores classical music is too fragile to have this kind of arguments.

The problem isn't with the speakers - mine are fine actually, as I am listening to this via my connected Sony Home Theater system. The problem is with the interpretation of the piece. This is the stiffest performance of this piece I've ever heard. It might as well be a cheap dime-store player piano for all I care. Blah!
