Thank you Peyresourde for these rare and very moving videos. He was an amazing athlete and the video of his training back at the 70's has nothing to do with what nowadays champions do. He was a true talented kid but also very unlucky. He didn't deserve that end and I still can't believe that this blessed young man that was full of health died at the age of 40.

So wonderful and so tragic at the same time, I allways have tears in my eyes when I watch this. To see these incredible jumps and how the people received him in his hometown, this good looking young man, where these people and his parents are just proud of their big hero without this unpleasant political propaganda of that time. And just like a shooting star, his successful time has suddenly gone, he can not gain a foothold in normal patterns of life, drowns in alcohol and dies so young.

@catmartinez567 NO. the western role is different. with the straddle the shoulders are paralle to the bar and u usually land on your back. with the WR the shoulders are perpendicular to the bar at the highest point and you land on your four...the WR was used when the landing pit was the same as the long jump pit, made of sand and sawdust. and you had to land in a way you did not hurt yourself.

I once coached a boy who went from 1.55 to 1.85 in a single day. These things happen from time to time. It depends on the athlete, their ability and attitude and sometimes a word of advice that suddenly changes things.

Volodya's lot in life was an amazing combination of sheer talent, good looks, and bad luck. If not for his career-ending injury, he might have jumped 2.50. His technique was kinda crappy, though. He probably needed a faster approach and a more refined technique of clearing the bar. Brumel had a better technique overall but Yashchenko was taller and had more talent overall. Brumel also had very bad luck with the motorcycle crash. It's sad that Yashchenko didn't get to compete at the Olympics.
@johnhunter43957 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you regarding your assessment that Yashchenko had more talent than Brumel. As far as the straddle technique is concerned Brumel was the standard to which all others aspired. Yashchenko was taller and had superior conditions thus enabling him to surpass Brumel's world record jump but his technique would have ultimately limited his ability to jump much beyond 2.35. Brumel was the best ever Sotomayer could NEVER have jumped 2.27 using the straddle off dirt into a sawdust pit.
@mr.sinjin-smyth Жыл бұрын
@@johnhunter4395 Just unfortunate no matter how one looks at it. Both Brumel and Yaschenko never got to achieve full potential due to horrible accidents and injuries. It just was meant for the Fosbury style to take over and succeed. That's just life.
