I remember him winning 1978 outdoor European Championship with a jump of 2.30. Is that the jump at 0:23? Anyway he had a magical lift in his jumps, it looked so easy, defaying gravity, very aesthetic. It's so tragic the knee injury ended his career so early and then his premature death, i am convinced that he had jumped at least 2.40 otherwise. Rest in peace.

I´m glad to share our passion for this magnificent straddler. He was ontop for only two short seasons but made 3 world records. After the records series of knee injurys ends his career and his tragically rest is history.

I'm a bit surprised by these results. as I was 13, at school, I was able to jump may times 1,65m wiith a scissor jump taking a frontal momentum. ( at the beginning of the year, I jumped 1,45m and them improved thanks to our teacher who made the lessons as challenges. However, this teacher never told me it was impressive; Once he told his colleague, amazed : oh, this is just instinctive : (I was upset). This old teacher tried to teach us ( we were two pupils loving high jump) the straddles technic. But it was really hard : without momentum, making a ventral, I jumped up to 1,55m, but with momentum, 1,65m My best jump was 1,72m. Later, another teacher told me I could reach 1,90m "with more technic"but I never did. I sprained my ankle at volley ball ( my dry jump was 85 cm and another player let his foot under mine while I was going down)...My ankle was weak.

That is not even close to the record of the highest jump over your height. Stefan Holm for example is only 5'11 and jumped 7'10.
@thethirdman2258 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Gottlieb You're right; it isn't. Biomechanist Dr Jesus Dapena, an expert on the high jump, pointed out that the straddle takeoff is more efficient but the flop clearance makes up for the difference. In truth, we should be seeing an almost equal spread of the two techniques and the straddle should not have died. What killed it was the fact that the flop is easier to learn.

@@thethirdman225 why? Your upper body is higher up and thereofre its easier to clear that and then the legs, here he has to get his whole body kver in one movement never being below the limit
@thethirdman2252 жыл бұрын
@@crabb9966 Fair question. High jump technique is more than just bar clearance. In fact, almost all of what matters in high jump happens on the ground. The straddle take off is more efficient than the flop so there is not very much difference in total efficiency. The reason for this is that the CoG is higher when the jumper leaves the ground in the straddle. So what the straddle jumper loses over the bar is gained in takeoff. Even then, you should take a look at Thomas Zacharias’s forward roll style of straddle, which gives nothing away to the flop in bar clearance. The reason everyone uses the flop is that it is easier to learn and requires nothing remarkable in terms of flexibility. It can take a couple of years to become proficient in the straddle but you can get good results with the flop in a couple of months. But in the end, all jumpers are different. Not everyone has a big back arch and those who do often have trouble coming out of it and hit the bar with the back of their thigh. There are also some jumpers who would get better results using the straddle, believe it or not.

@thethirdman2258 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't make any difference. The point is not whether he jumped "backwards" as you say or forwards, the most important point of any jump is the run up and take off. Doing the flop doesn't guarantee you will jump higher any more than using the straddle does. If you don't get off the ground well it won't matter what technique you use, you won't jump high.

Steve from Yellowstone No. The flop is not a miracle technique. The two styles have their merits. The flop is easier to learn and results come quickly. It has an arguably more efficient bar clearance. The straddle is harder to learn but has a more efficient take off. The point is that it is not a question of which technique you use. To jump high, you have to get off the ground effectively first.

@thethirdman2258 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't have made any difference. There are advantages to both techniques and they tend to suit different body types. A straddle jumper needs to be flexible and strong while a flop jumper needs to be fast. The relative efficiencies of the two styles cancel each other out. The main reason the flop has become the dominant technique is that it is much easier to learn and results come more quickly.
@kelamuni8 жыл бұрын
wrong. flop jumpers don’t need to be fast. check out Canadian gold medalist Derek Drouin. not fast.
@thethirdman2258 жыл бұрын
kelamuni Don't give me that "wrong" stuff. I know what I'm talking about. By most standards, Derek Drouin is fast. Certainly faster than a straddle jumper or a hybrid jumper like Jan Zvara. Look at the way he accelerates in the last five strides and tell me he's slow. I estimate he would be traveling at about 8-8.5 metres per second at that point.
@thethirdman2256 жыл бұрын

Obviously, you have never high jumped. Imagine if he not been injured at 20. He may have jumped 2.40 or higher and the history of the event would be turned on its’ head. The flop and the straddle are different and call for different skill sets. IMO, neither is inherently superior.
