God, this heavenly, almost glassy sound, these absolutely perfect runs and trills... But then also his musicality, the subtle melancholy in the first sonata or the playfulness or the noble virtuosity of the other sonatas... It's all there , and in what a wonderful way! Never before I've heard such beautiful and moving Scarlatti on a modern grand piano.

Beautiful!! Immaculate fingerwork. Perfect position of wrist, arm and body. The music coming through without contortioned face and writhing body trying to convince the audience that the player is deeply submerged in the emotions of the composer. Only the occaional raising of the eyebrows showing the pianist is WITH the music. If you listen with only your ears by closing your eyes, you can truly realise if the performer has got the point of the piece, or has missed the mark.

ABM at his (extraordinary) best. This is an outstanding gem of a video. Scarlatti's sonates are easy to play... Yeah, let's look and listen this video to understand how difficult can be to relatively master Mozart or Scarlatti's piano pieces. In particular, this playing of K27 is just shocking.

​@@mackiceicukice if it's truly helping the performer perform it the way they wish to by all means it's fair game. it often doesn't really feel that way though, and even with rachmaninoff i'd find it weird if people really contorted themselves a ton. I kind of associate that kind of motion with poeople who really heavily overdo their rubato for my liking. some people probably like it, since as you said, people are different, and that's valid. I do however see the other side of that point too, some people really take it to what feels to me like a bit of an extreme and that appears more common in recent years vs decades ago

Only playing his own piano specially adjusted for the mechanical touch that makes this execution of trills even possible from this perfectionist genius. I defy anyone who thinks his trills are even physically possible on just any concert ready steinway piano. Sure he could play any piano with 99% perfection but this level of 100% perfection, with that speed of trill, nope, the piano must be exactly as he needs it, and, there will be pianos on which even he would not be able to do his execution of trills in this video due to mechanical demands and the human hand. Today's pianists have a technique developed to adapt to any concert piano, which means they could never approach his beautiful execution that goes beyond that and expects a very specific piano preparation.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli è in simbiosi con lo strumento, lo rispetta. Altri, pur bravi esecutori, usano lo strumento percuotendolo perché deve emergere la loro supremazia; è un fatto di umiltà che nel primo caso non sfugge a nessuno, mentre oggi sono in troppi che esprimono superbia pur essendo esecuzione appunto superbe!

Credo sia da considerare il fatto che, da grande artista qual'era (si dice fosse avvezzo a studiare per ore su un singolo trillo), aveva "forza di dita" bastante per non far trasparire alcuno sforzo fisico in pubblico. Sforzo sicuramente provato in fase di studio, quantomeno per alcune composizioni, anche se in minor mole rispetto ad altri pianisti per via della sua predisposizione fisiologica. La vera umiltà (forse insuperata) credo non stia tanto nei gesti della pur meravigliosa interpretazione quanto nel grande e costante studio individuale, anche organologico e teoretico, pregresso all'esecuzione. Un risultato simile, comunque ottenuto da un essere umano, richiede un certo tipo di studio, serio e severo. Servono anni alimentati dalla Passione, non scusanti. E, come ogni vero Amore, deve durare per tutta la vita. Non è possibile ottenere certi livelli facendo "parcheggio sociale" presso una scuola di musica, qualche accordo improvvisato, quattro pernacchie cacofoniche pseudo-artistiche, o qualche sbracata canzonetta "all'afro-americana". Tantomeno è possibile disponendo di una teoresi sballata, falsa e contraddittoria o trovandosi a contatto costante con ambienti musicali degradati o addirittura degenerati. Sottolineo che senza conoscere affondo il proprio strumento non si può comprendere abbastanza la necessità di previo studio tecnico (oggi pressoché sparito o evitato nei conservatori), si imboccano solo strade sbagliate, false o funzionali a categorie di musica diverse da quella d'arte (come la leggera, di consumo o etnica...) e si diventa facilmente vittime dello stesso strumento. E fintanto che non lo capiranno in tanti, godiamoci MºBenedetti Michelangeli. Saluti

Wonderful, he uses the same techniques like gipsy musicians. No angular body movements, everything in circles. No part of the body inactiv, he gives the impulsion with the whole body. He does not play into the piano, never beats, always pulls the impulsion back into the air. All this in such an efficient way that you almost dont see it. He was able to handle any wild animal like that as well like old farmers. All natural things that are unknown only to people who didnt do hard, efficient farming work for long times. Arrau did some of that as well, as did rubinstein and as does pollini from what i see and hear. Arrau said he did lots of hard garden work and such to get most efficient with the whole body. All this and more you learn from good gipsy musicians, liszt also learned from them.

Hier hört man den besten Pianisten aller Zeiten - nicht nur mit dieser Interpretation. Das Pedal ist im allgemeinen ein Artikulations-Killer - Gott sei Dank: Nicht so bei ihm. Listening to the restrained yet obvious dynamic contrasts makes me wonder if D. Scarlatti often thought of his sonatas as best performed in his day on the clavichord. It couldn't get loud, but some dynamic contrast was possible. Was the keyboard big enough to accommodate his work?
