The fact is that Lewis was losing the first two rounds and then changed it up and went inside on Klitschko cutting him fairly (ie didn't headbutt). That fight was stopped fair and square. Eventually Lewis would've won on points as Klitschko was missing a lot of shots and couldn't see out of his left eye. Though Lewis was clearly not in the best cardio condition. There was no rematch because Klitschko wanted the same purse as the reigning undisputed HW champion of the world, which was preposterous. Then Lewis' wife made him retire. So that was that. The HW title was never reunited past that point.

Boxing has suffered over the last 20 years because there are more opportunities for black and latino youth now than before. 20+ years ago boxing was seen as a way out of the ghetto so it attracted men that clawed their way from the dirt. Same thing happened with Italian Americans before them. Why risk your well being getting punched in the face when you can make a decent living doing something better? UFC is an entirely different animal. It is a much more exciting sport where anything can happen and it attracts competitors from all walks of life, including women. To put Lennox with the group of ‘athletes that were taught to box’ isn’t fitting. Each boxer is going to have a different mindset, different motivations, different level of drive etc. Lennox started boxing young, and had an amateur record of around 80 fights , fought in 2 Olympic Games and showed all indications that he was aiming to cement himself as one of the greats. He even continued to work on his style after turning pro and implemented very good strategic skills and game plans for fights.

The Lennox Lewis era of boxing was the greatest heavy weight era of all time. Just based on the high levels of talent in the division. Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, Tua, Bird, Ibeabuchi, Briggs, Grant, Moore, The Klitschkos, Sam Peter, Foreman, Rahman, Mercer all are from around that era more or less. And every fight felt like an event because anybody could beat anybody on any given night. The problem with boxing is that it takes Forever to get the big fights made!! In the UFC the top guys fight each other all the time. @@dustincalloway564 right now it would be I agree. But the Ali act was written up in part because there is no central governing body overseeing and protecting the fighters. Since there is no central commission/ governing body they created the Ali Act to help protect the fighters from shady promoters and bad contracts...etc If there was an actual governing body then there would be no need for the Ali Act because there wouldn't be any promoters at all. Having all these different promoters is what's ruining boxing!! Promoter ABC dont want to work with Promoter XYZ so in turn we don't get to see the best fighters fight each other and its really hurting the sport. Thats why MMA is quickly becoming way more popular because all the top guys fight each other all the time.
