In this clip, Vlad started off speaking to John Salley about the highly anticipated Freaknik documentary, which led to John speaking about his experiences at the annual Atlanta event in the 1990s. John said it was like “Black spring break,” and he went on to detail how the participants were able to be free sexually. From there, John stated that the only event today that can compare is Toronto’s Caribana.

During Freaknik in the 90’s Florida Bass Music & Atl Booty shake was in full effect. Nothing but strip clubs songs is what made Freaknik great 😊. I moved to Atlanta in 93 and I’ve been here ever since

I remember I told my girlfriend I was going to visit my cousin in Atlanta and Freaknik just happened to be going on at the same time. "You went to Freaknik?" I got a earful when I returned 😆 🤣. I live in Canada it was great to be around that scene when Bass music was poppin because we hardly heard that music here at the club and it wasn't on the radios at all....for obvious reasons lol. Youngins missed out on that now defunct music era.

I'm from Toronto and grew up around Caribana annually. Been to Labor Day in BK....been to trinidad carnival. Been to Freaknik in Atlanta No other experience is remotely comparable with carnival in 🇧🇷. That is THE party to end all parties.

@@lethal5flow679 It was poppin in the late 90s til like the mid 00s. Clubs the weekend had some sold out venues with parties of like 3000+ people and lineups where you couldnt see the end. Nearly all of those places don't exist anymore and are condos. And the non black communities in the city whined about noise and crowds/traffic to the point that no outdoor events can go past 12am or risk massive fines for promoters. It's best if you combine a trip to Toronto Caribana with seeing your family that lives here. Otherwise dont waste your time/money. Best part of the weekend for me is the Sunday BBQ at my friends house.

Daytona Black Bike week was wild, but it was nowhere close to Freaknik. Shutting down Daytona as opposed to Atl is not the same. Daytona is a strip, Atlanta is a whole city. Not close and I attended both. Matter of fact I was at the first DBB in 89, where like Freaknik was created for college kids but turned into something more.

Caribana eventually surpassed Freaknik. As word got around Freaknik became a cesspool of horny animalistic men grabbing every female in sight often against their will.
