I've actually never seen many interviews with Gary Payton before. I've always known him as great player, but I also dig him as a person after watching this. He didn't dodge any questions here. He answered everything point blank and honestly, even the more uncomofrtable ones about the mistakes he made. Mad respect for him. I hope he's happy and healthy and achieves everything he's got planned right now.

Absolutely one of the most real dudes that I've seen in any major sport or in the entertainment business! Dude is just extremely honest with everyone and will tell it how he sees it but most of all he's honest with himself knowing that he has made mistakes just like everyone does in life! Lastly I believe that he has given his all in everything he does, never taking short cuts but always has stayed very humble and very grateful for everything he has in life! Some may mistake his confidence for cockiness do to him being the ultimate competitor but he's never had a ego or felt that he was better then anyone else!

The only other interview I ever heard that can rival a Gary Payton interview for complete honesty, no bullshit, raw emotion, facts, accountability and holding accountable, insight, tell a story, entertainment...was Evil Kniviel with Jim Rome(radio program). Gary is about telling you what you need to hear...rather than what you want to hear...and I love how he articulates it in almost a tribute retrospect show of Love to his Father. Find a Gary interview where he talks about John Stockton...its incredible the amount of Respect he gives to John Stockton saying Stockton always got the better of him... Gary Payton was the G.O.A.T trashtalker..but beneath that he had incredible Respect for the game, incredible respect for his opponents (its the best league in the World) and commanded incredible respect...because he was Gary Payton !

Great interview guy's ! Growing up in the 90's Watching Gary and Shawn Kemp is a dual that couldn't be stop. Especially on the pick and roll. I used play 🏀 myself and me too was a defensive first player. Playing defense for me lead me playing lots of minutes. It was frustrating at times because my teammates wouldn't play defense in crucial times that lead us to losing the game. So it felt I did all that work for nothing wasting all the energy, but when you get a group of guys that loves playing defense it's a great thing. 💯

I was 7 rows back from the floor at a Rockets Vs Heat game in Houston…. Now I’m a transplant from San Antonio (go Spurs) and I said something like ‘dude Tmac is roasting y’all!’. And when I tell you GP looked me in my eyes, talked to me off and on the rest of the game, went up 16 QUIK! Even the fans were getting on me for waking 35 year old GP up. He locked everyone down and they won. I will say that as always seemed like, Yao Ming was hurt, but they won. He finds me after the final horn and said ‘I still feel like playing, you want some big fella?’ He had 1 steal and 12 points, but affected that game soooooo much. Tmac had 37…. It was January something, check the records….TRUESTORY! Heat win 101-95… Dwade and Shaq had 56 combined….. this man is legend. Didn’t even start but played more minutes than the starter…. My bad Houston…. Didn’t really care tho, I’m a Spurs fan! 5 rings!

1996 NBA Finals will remain my all time favorite NBA Finals 64-18 Seattle Supersonics vs 72-10 Chicago Bulls. I was happy Seattle made it all the way to the NBA Finals after two 1st round disappointments. Sonics were the only team to win more than one game from the Bulls in playoffs. After trailing 3-0 was glad they won games 4 and 5 before it eventually ended. Seattle a very good team in their own right. Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton along with Detlef Schrempf, Sam Perkins, Hersey Hawkins,Nate McMillian and etc. Their intro at home games were awesome too.

Bill Russell's family moved to Oakland when he was 8 years old and prepped at McClymonds HS in Oakland. After playing at Mack, he matriculated to University of San Francisco. He is the most accomplished champion in the NBA. The Finals MVP is named after him. Don't disrespect the Bay Area History like that saying it started with Gary Payton. It started way before that. And I love Gary Payton. Just don't revise history. And KC Jones who you discussed getting fired and winning those titles as player and a Coach moved to San Francisco when he was 9 and attended the now defunct Commerce HS in San Francisco. Went on the University of San Francisco with Bill Russell. Come on guys you have to do better. Real hoop pioneers come from the Bay Area and I am a LA native, and love my section, but give credit where credit is due.
