I am fascinated by this guy. Clearly he is an intelligent man and, as he said, he has educated himself. Before that, he was illiterate. This tells us a lot about nature/nurture. I grew up in a difficult situation and was drawn into petty violence and "gang" culture, and dealt drugs and all that, but I was taught well as a child before my parents split up and my mother got with a nasty, mean and vicious guy who is the truest psychopath I've ever known in real life (I've met a few, but because I knew him so well I saw it up close and really had the displeasure of learning what a real psychopath is). He had me selling drugs at 14 and I wanted to hard and cool and bad and all that because that was the culture. The schools failed us. But because I was raised well up until I went into puberty and got exposed to all of that, there was something in me that told me that I could get out. In the end, I went back to live with my Dad and he got me back on the straight and narrow, and I had serious PTSD (still do) but I ended up going to uni and stuff and becoming a better person who actually had hope for the future. Before I went to uni, I had to kidnap my own mother to get her out of the clutches of that man, because I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I'd have left her with him. I had to trick him and get her in the car, drive her to my Dad's and park her on the sofa. I didn't even have a driving license. I wouldn't let her leave until we got him out of the house and when he eventually went, I went back with my mother and she couldn't even sleep in her own room due to fear and we had to share the front room (until I got a new girlfriend and told my mother that she'd better get back to her room lol). But the point of all this is that I was lucky because I had guidance early on and managed to get it later, because I had a way out. I am still damaged, could still snap and can feel those violent tendencies that were burned into me but I understand why I was the way I was and how I was able to change. The ironic thing is that, by nature, I am not a bad person and I did bad things because I thought I didn't know any better, whereas the man my mother was with, who had me selling drugs and was brutally violent (mother's solicitor said it was the worst case of domestic violence she'd ever seen and that was her speciality in law) seemed to me to be made that way. But then I think about what I knew about his upbringing - his parents would set the dog on him and sh*t like that. Nature/nurture is a funny thing, but I can relate to this man and I can see that, had he had a different start in life, he could've been something good and great. It's excellent to see him trying to give back. I try to do this myself, and have told my story many times. It's much more inspiring to see this than the usual "studio gangsta" rappers, putting on an image which is all completely fake. But, saying that, Glad's channel is about hiphop. However, now and then he does have some interesting guests with some real insights - the real guys, whether it is someone like the real Ricky Ross or some of cops he's had on. Some of the rappers too, like BG Knocc Out. And Eazy-E's son was cool. But so many of them are just posing and spreading negativity. Anyway, sorry for the rant, I just think that this guy is a good example of how a person can be shaped by external factors and the worst of these external factors would be prison, but also criminal culture in socioeconomically deprives neighbourhoods and all that stuff, and that if we, as a society, gave people better chances and opportunities, we'd see so much less crime and much emptier prisons. The establishment want it that way though - too much money to be made for the police playing cops and robbers, COs, probation officers, lawyers/solicitors, judges, gangsters, drug traffickers, bankers and of course the security services. Yep, keep it the way it is. In some places, there is no opportunity for a young person but to join the gang: carry this bad to X and we'll pay you 300. It starts small, then its all downhill, even if you think you're going up. But the people that need to know this are too hard to find.
