Vlad doesn't understand the nuances of Drake's situation. Drake is half-BLACK AMERICAN on his dad side, and half JEW on his mom side. He's been in entertainment BEFORE rap. No canadian MC's have ever made it to the States (K-os, Swollen, Maestro, Rascalz, Choc, Sauks, Kardinal, DL, Class, NONE of them). Closest was Tom Green before Drake came on. It is EXTREMELY hard for Canadian rappers to get ANY exposure in America because they aren't pushed over there. Drake is HALF black american and JEWISH; he is part of the hollywood/US elite already.

KardiFan2000 Drake is arguably THE top rapper in America (and by default the world) today. Top meaning most pushed, most mainstream. Not a single Canadian rapper ever had that exposure because America never gave them a chance. If they don't play Canadian rappers in America, then they ain't pushing Canadians. Kardinal was the closest in the early 2000s, had a small guest on Clipse 'Grindin' remix but he never sold in the states.

Hyun Kwon Maybe in terms of number of records sold, downloads, streams, etc he's the "top" rapper but not in terms of skill. Most of the other guys you named also had exposure in the states (obviously not to the level of Drake) and they were real MCs, but then again, how many artists rise as high as Drake commercially? Not many. In the same breath, I don't think the milestones that k-os, Kardi, Choclair, etc reached while trying to take Canadian hip hop over the border should be taken lightly either. There's no natural connection between Drake and the others...as you said, his American father was already in the music industry, his mom is Jewish and he was already on TV...that combo pretty much led him to where he is today.

KardiFan2000 K-Os was incredible; he was one of my favorites from the early mid 00s but he was pretty much kept in the canuck market. A CND mainstream/radio rapper like Rascalz or Kardinal would be like an underground rapper in America in terms of recognition and visibility. Which is an absolute shame. Canada offers very little in terms of rap opportunities because the whole country is like Seattle, the least hip hop region in America. Black americans would rather listen to Lil Yacthy or 2 Chainz or Go Yayo or somebody from their own regions.

I LOVE good music, period. I also love common sense. With that being said, Rastas in countries outside of Jamaica who make reggae music will and should ALWAYS acknowledge where it originated~ Jamaica. There is absolutely NO difference in Hip hop. They both use English. Reggae is unapologetically Black Jamaican. Hip-hop is unapologetically Black American. Reggae is global, Hip-hop is global. Good Reggae music is made globally, good Hip-hop music is made globally. Yet lets not undermine or disrespect the origins where these genres are from and still thrive with talks of profit margins and "markets," words like that are VERY appropriation-ish. Take a look at the Netflix documentary 'Reincarnated' when even Snoop was checked by the Jamaican OG's about cashing in on the Reggae market and them being protective of their culture. He didn't argue or try to justify, he just accepted it and humbled himself because Jamaica don't play that shit and American's are entitled to feel the same even if they are Internet trolls. I am still waiting for a legitimate answer in reply to her statements rather than dismissing her, she brought up some valid points that you will have to get use to answering especially if you expect UK Hip Hop to become bigger. My simple advice~ don't skip steps or move too fast and miss a loop, give honor where its due. I don't see ANY OTHER culture making their own spin on chop sticks even though they're used to eat food with all over the world, we can all agree that it is ASIAN CULTURE'S. Hip Hop IS AMERICAN and if UK and other international artists pay genuine homage to Hip Hop's American roots (without appropriation which is what Azealia Banks was referencing to), while doing their own thing then theres no problem with it. Note Bruno Mars' recent confession in an interview when he went on record saying "Not only Hip hop but ALL American music started with Black people." When Black American's reference this in interviews, we too are dismissed-- So we voice it in Hip Hop songs to reach the masses. Non American Hip hop artists often do need to to humble themselves and then take page from Drake's book as in his early and present career he's given MUCH HOMAGE to American artists who influenced his liking to Hip- hop such as Aaliyah, Lil Wayne, Lil Brother, Slum Village, Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and many more. I know a lot of ya'll are trying to prove that you're not culture vultures, but by saying "We don't need to market to the US" is disrespectful and a serious slap in the face to hand of the creators and we don't play that shit in the US. I find it weird that a lot of UK acts are saying how much influence the US had on the UK sound. Grime wasn't born out of the dirty south sound. The sound was born from finding a middle point between D&B and Garage, 2 of the top genres of the 90s. Grime lyricism was born from 2 decades of MCing in Reggae, Ragga, Jungle and D&B. Back in the early 2000s, grime didn't even use hi-hats in the dirty south way. We only began to adopt an American sound coming up to the 2010s when our UK artists lost the belief in their own sound. Seeing the "success" of the likes of Chipmunk in America, everybody flocked and began copying their style. Lets not forget that the popularity of modern trap was next to blow up after the UK genre Dubstep took over the whole of the US. If any UK artist says that our style was born of American, they're too scared of being rejected by the US and miss their chance of becoming a global pop star.

i always liked the uk rap scene. in the early 2000s anyone who did music who was transitioning to the internet saw their was a worldwide rap scene on free webpages and stuff before myspace it was a really cool era. met alot of people overseas from that. when america was turning into singing about money and pop music, uk was still into the 90s american music so it was way better hooking up with them on email and shit like that. it was a fun time spreading uk artists over here and vice versa. not to many people knew about it. then myspace came and fucked everything up and totally flooded the market on top of cd burners killing the industry lol
