on 4:18 you configured your PC 192.168.1.101 with IP address:- 192.168.1.100 so that was why when you pinged 192.168.1.100 thinking it was the PC on the otherside of the network you actually got a successful ping from your own NIC... Just saying... Keep up the good work! (DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE??)

Great video. You did make an error at time 4:30 when you set the IP address for 192.168.1.101 you actually set it for 192.168.1.100. Yes Ping worked but you would not be able to ping 192.168.1.101. I just thought I'd point that out. Just a minor mistake.

Nawaz mehmood No, you are slightly Confused. He Never communicated "between" different vlans. He started on Vlan 1, and he went across the middle on Vlan 1, and he Finished on Vlan 1. Thus, he Never left his Subnet. And, no Routing took place. (In fact, he Never entered a Default-gateway on the Hosts). ~ Of course, i am ignoring the oversight that he pinged himself by accident, But Dan's Logic was Sound :)

This series is very helpful and informatative. Thank you for putting this knowledge on the internet for other aspiring network engineers. I was listening to what you said about the Catalyst 2960 being a Layer 2 switch and this confused me somewhat. I've been researching and have a question for you. Doesn't the ability to assign each SW port interface with an IP address make the Catalyst 2960 a layer 3 SW ?
@wu1ff679
@wu1ff679 6 жыл бұрын
no, giving the SW port interface an IP address doesn't mean that the switch can route between VLANs

hello man great video but you mentioned two ways to communicate across two switches, one is we can put a wire on f0/2 of both switches to make vlan 50 pc(which on f0/10, 192.168.50.101 ) to communicate to another pc which is on other switch (port f0/10,192.168.50.102). And second method is by creating trunk,my question is about first method is that pc 192.168.1.100 (on default vlan) were able to communicate with pc 192.168.1.101 cause they on the same same port f0/5 and vlan and how vlan 50 pcs are supposed to communicate if we put wire on f0/2 on both switches..despite the fact that both pc exist on vlan 50 on the same port f0/10. thanks

I know it's a waste to use separate links for each vlan but are there any benefits to using a separate link for each vlan? Would it make the connection faster since not all the vlans share one link

Right, I misspoke, vty 0 15 is correct. Double check the IP address you set up on the switch's VLAN interface. You probably want to reconfigure regardless in case you missed something.

This video is confusing, How are you able to communicate between different vlans just by trunking? Either you use sub interfaces and a router or the switch has to be layer 3. Only then can you communicate between different vlans. How are you able to ping between two pcs of different networks just by using trunk?

It is possible to connect 2 gateways(192.168.0.1, 192.168.161.5) on the same vlan? Because I want to connect our SIP Trunk uplink on our gateway 192.168.0.1 which our SIP T is 192.168.161.5
@Gaurav4u22

Sir, @6:00 you have mentioned that the two PC's are on the seperate network but they are actually on the same network that is 192.168.50.0 The reason they cannot communicate is that by default only VLAN1 PCs can communicate between different switches. For other VLANS to communicate, like VLAN 50 PC on one switch with VLAN 50 PC on another switch we need a Trunk port. But you have mentioned that 192.168.50.101 and 192.168.50.102 are on different networks so they will not be able to communicate, which is actually bit off the track. By making PC-192.168.50.101 on Switch 0 and PC-192.168.50.102 on Switch 1 part of VLAN 50 we can make them communicate, but of course we need a Trunk port between the two switches to accomplish that.That too we can do it only because they are on the same network. Just to clear: For VLAN1 PC's to communicate we don't need a Trunk port. BTW thanks for all your great videos...they are very helpful!!!

You can't put IPs on L2 links between the 2 switches, so why do you need an IP (albeit an SVI) to associate with a VLAN? I mean if switches are L2 devices? Is it the story that when you associate an IP network with a VLAN, you are instructing the switch to understand that any hosts on this network 192.168.x need to be passed through to VLAN 1? Or how to conceive this?

+Mark Jason Ortiz Not sure who you've replied to, but Robert is right. At 4:17, Dan (the uploader of this video) assigns the same IP address as on the other computer on the same VLAN but on the other switch. This creates IP conflicts, and the PC he pings from might actually ping itself.
