I have to say Laura, I'm again impressed by how real you keep this channel, but let me explain: You've come up with a really original idea in your VLOGs "record of the week", at least it's original for me, beacause I haven't ever seen that until you did anywhere near woodworking. Also, you're really honest! In every VLOG, you seem to tell something really new and original. Not only new, but from your heart and thought provoking... I've never thought about the process you told us about in your VLOG #12. About how the making itself is really rewarding and the way is your goal. Or the VLOG #9, work life balance, I can only say YES! :) Also, as I learned in this video, you're just not so cheap to put it all out there! You're also true to yourself and you don't want to put something out you don't personally and really like. You have exceptional talent in "making" (woodworking, metalwork... as well as videography and composition) and I have mad respect for your work ethic and skillset, just so you know. P.S.: I've bought tickets for the Berlin maker Fair, hope to see you there... this time, not so drunk :D

Thumbs up for the awesome T-shirt! Someone once told me they learn more from their failures than they ever do from their successes. The great thing about KZbin is that I can learn from others failures. You didn't ask but I say you show some of the projects you don't like it could be helpful to others and you might be surprised what others think of your "failed" projects. In the end you have created something from nothing why not share?

Did the same thing to my thumb a few years ago. I was using square drive so not really any excuse. John Heinz did a time lapse of his thumb by taking screen shots from videos over many months. I like the idea of painting your other nails to match. Could start a fashion trend!
@jamiereader8 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear the thumb isn't hurting now. It's certainly an impressive blood blister! Coincidentally, after doing something similar (just damaging the work rather than myself) I ended up switching to Torx screws instead. If I have to use Philips/Pozidrive now, I make sure I'm using a Wera bit in my drill as they seem to last longer for me.
@laurakampf8 жыл бұрын
wera is my go to brand as well! love the wrenches. i use spax phillips head because i don´t like switching between torx bits all the time. but quality screws won´t let the bit slip

Wall of trials. Much to be said for showing your projects some failures are dislike but that is a personal preference someone else may think it beautiful, some failures are a contrivance that just doesn't function right that may be a design issue and so on. Many of these are valuable both to make and to show. Of course a much longer discussion should be here, that can unwind in the future. Very good vlog issue this week. Thanks Laura.

Hey Laura! Just another thumb comment. From my experience the thumb becomes very sensitive as the old nail comes off and the new one isnt fully grown. I used super glue to glue the old nail to the "nagelbett" (too lazy to look that one up) because it was still partly attached. Used a nailfile to smooth everything out. Repeat the process after a week as it keeps growing out. Helped me tremendously. Keep up the good work. Gruß aus Münster

Maybe for the stuff you don't like, you could ask for feedback on possible ways to improve it and if you like one, try the suggestion. My thumb nail came off when I cut through my thumb bone with a table saw while clearing firewood in one of the most stupid inattention things I have ever done. But it has regrown after plastic surgeons repaired the bone, so I think the odds on your thumb recovering are good. PS we are measured on what we give, not what events prevent us from doing. You give a lot.

I shut (read _slammed_) my thumb in a car door once, and it ended up looking like yours ;( The nail bed basically died, and a NEW nail started growing underneath! It started pushing the old nail off, which was all kinds of freaky :( Staff safe, silly! I know what you mean about the cheap ass screws :( Regarding that lamp, if I was gonna combine something like copper with a wood, I'd do it in inlaid bands, kind of like when you made Lucille. Cut random grooves into the wood, lay copper bands in at different directions, glue it in place, then cut another groove. perhaps even a Celtic knot design :D

Please please please show the failures. They reinforce your humanity. Plus, I would love to see that lamp. It looks an awful lot like a handgun shell casing.
@simplediyr8 жыл бұрын
I believe those failed projects would still be great content. For me and I'm sure for many others, it's not the project itself I look at, it's the technique I look for and want to learn from. Plus even though you don't like it, others may like it. Here's a suggestion. Since they are finished, go ahead and publish them but add a narration of some sorts telling us why you think it failed and why you don't like it. Anyway, best of luck.
@laurakampf8 жыл бұрын
you might be right...but i am super critical of my work. if i publish a video i make sure i am happy with the content and that i can stand behind the project. so i rather start fresh than invest more time (editing) in something that i am not happy with. you know?
@PasiSavolainen8 жыл бұрын
I can see that your production is much more about the actual successes than "learning experience", but that latter one is a huge part. It would be intensely interesting to hear you talk about why you'd think that a piece is not a success you'd be interested in showing (ie. your criterias for esthetically pleasing/interesting/oddly satisfying creation). I didn't even think before how extremely hard it is to have a weekly schedule of successes to show people.
@simplediyr8 жыл бұрын
+Laura Kampf yup, totally get it. I'm the same way. And I also have finished projects that I hate. It's hard to put time into something like that, but I'm going to try just because of the value of the techniques and as Pasi mentioned below, it would be interesting to know why we didn't like it. Maybe you can not make an entire build video and just use it for a vlog and talk about it. Anyway, I'm a fan so anything you do I will support all the way ;-)
@simplediyr8 жыл бұрын
+Pasi Savolainen yeah it's very hard to keep up with a schedule. Which is why I do mine in seasons. I record all my projects in advance, edit them and release them every week. While those are going I'll be working on the projects for the next season. So much easier I found.

+Laura Kampf It was a bit, but the end was blunt. Not sure if that's good or bad really! It could have gone a lot worse - I managed to miss the nail..

It can be difficult to show failed work, but there may be some value in it. What if you were to re-edit the video, and talk about what you were trying to achieve, what you like and what you don't like, where you think it went wrong, what you might do differently, etc. it could end up being a really successful video of a not so successful project.

Hey Laura, please, please mark that video with a new title. All those informations about the process of your work - and the time consuming intensity as well - are too important for your channel! Great vlog, I love it.!

I love the song "Maps" by them. And I say that as a diehard metal fan.

Once someone slammed the door and hit my finger and it hurts like hell . My finger looked just like yours . it was all black but it started to grow outward and the new nail that is growing looks fine .it took me about a year to grow back my new nail and the black broken nail is all gone .

I'd like to see even the projects you didn't like, I think it's a good way to learn from the perceived failures of the creator. 🤓

I've been watching the smashed spot creep up your thumbnail the last couple of videos, that had to really hurt when you did it. What happened?
@laurakampf8 жыл бұрын
