I love that you don't over-critique when doing writing conferences. I am the same way with my students. When beginning writers are putting so much effort into their work, pointing out and fixing every single grammatical error is discouraging and overwhelming. I want to encouraging editing and fixing, but I am very selective about what we focus on (I teach 2nd).

Your comment really helped me as a homeschool parent (and as an English major with a concentration in editing). 😬 Thank you. ❤

Yes 🙌 if we fix every grammatical error then is it even their writing at this point? Select a teaching point and roll with it. They’re 6 years old and have years of schooling left!

You are an amazing teacher! I am in my 25th year of teaching and I only wish I had been as great at teaching when I was your age. I am currently a host teacher and I have turned my student teacher on to your channel. You have taught me a lot as well!

Congratulations on 25 years, I wish I could come learn from you! Thank you for sharing this channel with your student teacher and thank you for the compliment! It means a lot - I think when you don't know people and they teach in different places you just see so much, even though I feel like what I do is soooo very normal to someone else it could be a wow moment. That's so cool to me!

Crossing my fingers I’ll get my hands on secret stories and rime magic soon. They look like such amazing resources when you implement them in your classroom! How do you remember all of the phonics rules? We use words their way in my third grade classroom and I feel like I’m constantly checking on why a word is sorted in a specific spelling pattern. It just feels like so much to remember lol. Seriously so appreciative that you share so much of your day. Love when you recognize your mistakes and put fun light on it!

Ahhh thank you!!!!!! I think being in first since I introduce SO MUCH I just have to know it to explain it to them.....the secret stories are very helpful. Whenever I get to something I'm not sure of I turn to the Science of Reading What I Should Have Learned in College facebook group and search my question - that would be a great place for you to search questions and learn rules and exceptions haha!

You might not have enough but I use whisper phones during our independent reading time. That way the kids can still hear themselves read but it is not so loud.

Have you tried whisper phones for reading? You can also make them out of pvc pipes. I have noticed that it helps control the volume, and the students can still read aloud.

My school district has asked us to start using Zearn, mid-year mind you. They push that there is improvement even if you do not use EngageNY/Eureka Math. BUT they teach a certain way that is different and use wording that can be confusing. I enjoy your Vlogs!! You inspired this seasoned teacher to start my own channel.

I am just glad to know I am not the only one who is struggling with the voice level while kids are working. I truly want them to be able to collaborate but I think I need some noise cancelling headphones or the loopy ear buds. I’m so sensitive to the noise and I have a student who is too. It’s exhausting with that much stimulation!!

I wrote John and I. The way we speak and write can be different! It's casual speaking and it's the way I speak :) is it grammatically correct? No. Do I feel comfortable speaking granatically correct 100% of the time? No :) it's not natural to me!

@@MrsCallsCampers The vocabulary is very specific to Eureka, so I'd check and make sure nothing is mentioned that would be confusing to your kids. But it's been weeks and it was probably fine! I love Zearn and swear by it.

I love your videos and ideas. Please make an effort to start saying "John and I". They are learning their grammar foundation from you and I know you don't want another teacher to have to fix it later. I've heard it in many videos so I'm sure it's a habit but I know you can fix it and help your students learn the correct way.
@MrsCallsCampers Жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! If you saw my writing I did :) but I'm also human and this is how I talk - I still know the "proper grammar" when I need it. They are also exposed to so many other individuals with other ways of speaking (and so many books!) so I don't feel like it's particularly damaging to them for me to just be speaking and say something grammatically incorrect from time to time
@tamaragayle3993 Жыл бұрын
Clare I agree!
@claredavis5960 Жыл бұрын
@@alb8539 it's never too early to teach good habits. The longer they pay the harder to break. As shown in that it's how she talks even though she knows it's wrong. She can fix it early when it's easier instead of passing a burden on to future teachers.
@tamaragayle3993 Жыл бұрын
I noticed in the following clips the students were following Miss Calls' sentence structure, saying things such as "me and my mom " . THAT is why it's important ! I don't think it's "casual speaking" when you are teaching. You are always "on". Littles are absorbing your words like sponges . It is natural to me to use curse words, but i would never while teaching .
@HappilyOrganizedChaos Жыл бұрын
Mayleen, yes I agree with you. You did say John and I in your writing, children are exposed to different cultures, ethnicities and languages that sometimes if we don’t use “proper” grammar, they are fine 🫶
