this is what the first week of school looked like for ME :) every school and teacher is different. Things obviously aren’t perfect but I kind of wanted to show that so you could see what it looks like/sounds like before my first graders really get it down!

I also HATE whole group bathroom breaks. When it’s necessary though, I do a skittle competition for boys vs. girls. Whichever group is quickest and quietest , they will get a skittle from my skittle jar. Sometimes if they’re fantastic, both groups will get a skittle…..and sometimes neither will get it. But, it works really well!

This shows me how much being a teacher is not just a choice. You are truly created to be a teacher. I work with psychiatric patients and I know it is a different type of patience but I am in awe of how you manage all of them.

Been there with the overactive first graders. Sounds like you’ve been handling it like the champ you are. Practice, patience, and partner them off as often as possible. I live the way you have them repeat after you- constantly and instantly getting attention back on you. Your energy with them is upbeat and positive. Impressive!!!

As a first year teacher, sometimes you think that you're the only one facing problems. Whenever I talk to my other teacher colleagues and team, they also share similar feelings when it comes to classroom management. It feels reassuring to hear similar feelings because it shows us that we're not alone. I have about 3 boys that need the constant guidance and redirecting

Thank you SO MUCH for showing how you introduce your flexible seating!!! I have full flexible seating in 3rd grade and will be moving down to 1st grade in February and have been racking my brain on how to introduce it and keep them safe! I will definitely follow your lead, model, model model! 😍🥰

Thank you so much for sharing during this busy time. It sounds like we basically have the same class this year so I will be following along for all the tips. I can definitely relate with the “it wasn’t a total train wreck” comment. I’ve never had a class struggle with basic routines so much before. We also started the otter writing craft and will be finishing it on Monday. They are so cute. Thank you for that freebie.

I have a lot of boys and one girl who need constant reminders this year too.. 14 boys and 8 girls this year… whew! You’re making me kick myself because you’re having a lot more structure than I did the first week. (Like the introduction of the seats and students trying them out.) We marched into curriculum on like day 4 since my first grade team is expected to follow our pacing guide. Wish I had a bit more freedom for things like read alouds, social/emotional and secret stories… but we have so much scripted stuff and required lessons maybe one day! 😭😅

As a parent.. I hope to set my child up for success by helping them out BEFORE they get to a school setting. Too many parents don't teach their kids anything then send them to school, expecting a teacher to teach their child AND 15+ others... simple things.. like bathroom etiquette and not interrupting, etc.
@MrsCallsCampers
@MrsCallsCampers Жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying here. I love that you aim for this! Bathroom etiquette at school is something that is completely different from home. The routine is not the same at all. As far as interrupting, their brains are still developing. There are lots of things parents can do to help their children succeed before school, but school is also a challenging environment for many children. They are just starting to get some impulse control by the time they're in school and suddenly they're expected to be "good listeners" for hours and hours at a time. I really don't blame the parents for these things. Especially students with ADHD, they have a much harder time regulating emotions and impulses. So it's nice to hope your child can go to school and be successful by the definition we as adults have, but the truth is, school is a time in their life when they are learning these simple things, and the environment is an exhausting and challenging one for most students. I see the meaning of what you are saying though - and agree there is a lot that CAN be done to help at home! But many of the really challenging things that I know I face in my classroom are also with students who are neurodivergent, and knowing that, we especially can't look to blame parents! :)

@@MrsCallsCampers I really appreciate this explanation Mayleen. As a kid with undiagnosed ADHD, I had a lot of challenges, and most of my teachers were very abusive towards me because of it. I constantly got in trouble, and they were constantly calling my parents, but there wasn't anything my parents could do, except ground me. So I was grounded all of the time which obviously had no impact on my behavior, if anything made it worse. We need more teachers like you who advocate for their students. They will NEVER forget you.

I just started teaching a small class at our co-op. 10 kids. I DON'T KNOW HOW TEACHERS DO IT WITH 20-30!!! These kids have no ability to focus, are super destructive, and just cannot stop talking. We get to spend our next class talking about animals that have to listen to sruvive (nature studies class). Not exciting, but I can't even get through simple lessons without my kids hanging from the ceiling, so boring rules it will be. 🤣 You are truly an amazing teacher and I hope your admin realizes how rare teachers like you are.
