I can’t help but to laugh and just shake my head when I look around at some of the drivers now days. Driving around with their feet up on the dash, poking along in their company truck in the middle lane going 60mph. I was in Baltimore yesterday and the shipper told a driver to remove a piece of wood from his trailer. He had no clue what he said. Just gave him a blank stare. At the very least, a basic understanding of the English language should be required to drive. But hey... you say that and you’re automatically a racist.

Can't speak for the US, but in Canada some years ago new regulation passed that required all drivers go through a much stricter (and more expensive) training and licensing program. If that means safer, smarter roads, then I'm all for it! I myself am looking for a career change, and want to move to trucking. But I am kind of scared to make the move!

This is why I don't have a cb. I have logging channels on company radio. I'll let a log truck know if I spot a problem on their truck. (Guy was dragging a chain yesterday and I keyed him up) I don't care what speed other drivers do as long as they don't yo-yo speed. That drives me nuts. I let others pass when they want to run faster, can't stand when drivers slow excessively for every mild curve then drop the hammer when I have the chance to pass. I drive at consistent speed as much as possible.

Great job going down Mt Eagle. The last 3 times i went down I was maxed out in weight. Like you i went the speed limit 25mph in the correct gear, engine break on and kept it in the zone all the way down. I usually have 2 other big trucks follow me down, we keep our proper distance. All is good and i have gone up and down Mt Eagle since my COE days back in 1975. :-)

Troopers do sometimes patrol this area like 6 times a year! The rest of the year,trucks cars exceed the posted speeds.Hundreds ot times also.Lack of enforcement is the primary cause of most accidents.There are all kinds of drivers,good,medium,horrible so hence the result is accidents.State of Wyoming has signs at a certain point in construction zones which read,MERGE into this lane,and anyone who does not merge is written a citation by Troopers posted down the road.This prevents road rage from the aggressive drivers who go to the very last point where the lane is closed and expect to wedge their vehicles ahead of someone who is in the correct lane.

Another scenario on that burn down is he got so hot that he melted the inner oil seal and the oil caught fire and then you have a big fire that no extinguisher on a truck will put out. Love the headcam action!

I spent just over 15 years driving a truck, and there is nothing worse than getting stuck in super slow moving stop and go traffic. I have spent several hours at once in it, never got out of first gear, and damn near killed my left knee pumping the clutch. I still hate it in my automatic trans pickup. As for brakes, I was a codriver once with another driver who tended to rid the brakes. Once I thought for sure we were going to die. The brakes faded so bad we had no brakes. We finally wound up stopped against the side of a mountain. Both the truck and trailer were pretty much destroyed. But we survived. I never saw that guy again.

Had a guy from "W***E***" pass me yesterday in the rain because apparently 60mph isn't fast enough. There were two SUVs ahead of me. The semi truck jumped right in front of me and rearended both of those SUVs. He was running close to 70 on wet roads with moderate traffic.

I've run Mt. Eagle quite a lot, and truth be told once you learn the rhythm of the mountain and know your truck's rhythm, you can move swiftly. Staying off the brakes and using your jakes is the secret, keeping following distances high and running at night in cooler ambient temperatures saves the vehicle

Hmmm, 17-18years; 14 long haul, 2 line, and a year of miscellaneous. Grossing out with weights of 125,000+lbs. Hauled; vans, flat bed, drop decks, heavy equipment, cans and for a little fun drove dump with a pup or haul heavy equipment. I’ve been from coast to coast to coast, north and south...expect Mexico...well that’s a fib, I had a couple of days to get Munro La, had a few days and was at a truck stop off of the 10 in El Paso, to a cab to boarders day walked across for the day...other than that my experiences have been all US and Canada. I’ve driven pretty much every piece of equipment in one form or another...my first truck being an 85 GMC General with the old Hendrix suspension, hard mounted cab to the frame...so basically just the air seat. I estimate that I’ve put over 1.5 million miles accident free, which includes my dump and heavy equipment hauling. I think I can speak on the subject matter quite confidently. ;) Cheers

Times have changed so much.... back in 92-98 we would run monteagle, sandstone, fancy gap, or grape vine out west 90-100 with a big cam 400 with 0 Jakes and run past the scales in Texas with lights out for hundreds of miles in a convoy with bull wagons and blowing scales! Those were the days....

Your Monteagle is truly a beautiful place, I also like the pretty fishing hole at the bottom of the hill. Yeah, I'm always getting passed by our "super trucker" friends going down any of these mountains, but I was taught a long time ago that brakes are for stopping my truck, not controlling downhill speed. Mt Eagle is nasty on the East side. Back in the 70's I lost my brakes half way down. An air line decided it was a good time to develop a hole. Was empty but still a crazy ride. Hardly ever came down without seeing a truck with smoking brakes. Those were the days before Jake brakes. When truckers had to rely on their brains.

I love that mountain. Its actually one of the most manageable mountains out there. The only obstacle is two sharp turns but other than that, it's not bad.

Had the opportunity to run this a few times back in 2003-04. Nothing too stressful when you’re aware and in control. 80,000 isn’t scary for a driver who is respectful of the conditions. Up here in Canada we run 63,500 kg (140,000 lb) on a SuperB, so it pays to have the equipment in top condition and always be ready for the fools (in 4 wheelers and the big trucks).

My better half owns land right there at the bottom on Monteagle on the right. She talks about back in the old days on the old road how many trucks wrecked coming down & they would hire out to clean up the loads. The old road was a whole lot different that that nice road they have today. I have run them both & the new road is a whole lot better. No comparison.

I am an "old-time" trucker...that hill is a nothing.... I always ran that hill at 55 m.p.h. and was off of it in minutes.....that way your brakes dont heat up at all.....these new regulations make driving DANGEROUS.....I ran 48 states everywhere with no Jake, no cruise, no nothing,240 cummins for many years.....5,000 miles per week..... trust me that the new regulations are DANGEROUS

I have done that before but not on Monteagle. It was on a hill in Virginia, 2 lane 10% grade with road construction. Grossed out & was at a dead stop due to the construction. Had to take off at that angle like that. The damn truck started backwards cause the truck didn't have enough power to pull the grade from a start loaded heavy. I will scare you enough to make you mess your drawers, lol. Thank GOD the car behind me was smart enough he had stopped about 30 to 40 yards behind me. Must have happened to him before. Ah the good ole days.

I've been tailgated nine ways to Sunday pulling a flatbed gooseneck with a deuce-and-a-half Ford in the mountains around Eureka Springs, Ark. By sand trucks, usually... Oy... Yellow signs are recommend speed. They are suggested speeds so you don’t burn up your brakes on the down hill grade. Speed “limit” signs are white and black (federal law).

It is ironic that his truck driver is talking so much about not going over ten miles a hour going down hill because it is considered reckless driving. But while he is talking about this, CMVs are going by him at least 10 mph faster then the posted speed limit.

I saw a guy with a long dump running 100 through the hills and mountains of W.Va and that damn thing somehow didn't slide or tip. It made me cringe. I've seen some trucks end up in the worst way. Professionalism is paramount in situations like this. Most of the reckless drivers are coming out of Canada...lots of Arabic decent who can't speak Jack of English. I watched a driver spend 45 minutes to back into a dock on flat ground with an open space in front 3/4 the length of the truck. Canadian driver...see above. In addition, ALWAYS TALKING WITH A HANDHELD DEVICE!

I had a simular experience going down Donner pass. Right lane ends ahead, I'm in the right lane holding traffic to the squeeze. But when it came time for me to merge,, the asshole car hauler in the left lane tried to close the gap to not let me merge. But I cut the fucker off, and that really pissed him off. It amazed me to think that even though I kept 50 cars behind us, he didn't appreciate it enough to return the favor.

Hahaha, I've been up that mountain(Mt Eagle), I-24 eastbound at 90mph and down it at 110+ at 2-3 in the morning. I had a pretty hot car 10 years ago, 1999 Camaro Z28, stock power but huge sticky road race tires, big brakes, full suspension, roll bar, 5 point harness/race seat. I was stupid back then though, lucky I never did get caught the 2-3 times I did that.

i'm a newer driver (6 months I'm 21 so give me a brake we all start somewhere) and I'm starting out with Schneider i got a 2015 Frieghtliner with a manual transmission and the Detroit diesel in there, how big is the learning curve is going from a 10 speed to an 18 speed? Is it just a lot of skip shifting typically, also thanks for the video this first year for me is all about learning the safest way to operate a class 8 and that safety corridor tip you gave is really some good info, i try not to speed but i do get a little impatient as a night time driver in some of these safety corridors where the speed is 45 on a flat ground 4 lane highway but its good to know how to stay out of trouble.

The cure for hot brakes... 2 liter of soda. I've pulled up on trucks with a blown chamber that have already wasted their fire extinguisher, as the flames flair back up you shake the bottle pop a hole near the bottom, and no more heat = no more fire.

First time I went over Monteagle was in 1977. Night time and drizzling rain. Scared the Hell out of me! Been over every pass and mountain on the North American continent since. Still have great respect for that hill. LMAO

1armedgal I work security (in the process of going into trucking)and I swear to god the amount of truck drivers i get that speak NO english is ridiculous. I had one guy speak ZERO english, couldnt/didn't read signs and did over 1 million+ in damage to a BP refiner in NJ when he made a wring turn. He showed up at my gate lost, needed to turn around. I got permission from the terminal mng to let him in to turn around. I explain to him what to do, literally walked next to his truck (like holding his hand) i told him to u-turn and instead he sees an open road and goes to drive to it (idk maybe his gps was telling him that was the road he wanted, but you cant exit the facility that way) well thank god the huge holding tank was empty because he ripped all the piping out of it and wedge the truck under other pipes. Cops, fire dept, ems, coast guard (because it was twic facility) show up and guess what? He couldn't speak a lick of english to any of them. Now of course they are all trying to figure out if it was on purpose or a dry run to attack the facility. Total chaos. My favorite line is "Im not from here" so they don't have stop signs or traffic lights where your from? I get getting lost and not knowing the area, but to totally disregard the markers to baffling. I feel its because they actually dont know what the sign means or is saying.

Mount Eagle is the first Mountain that I ever drove a tractor trailer down and I almost lost my life on this mountain because no one never taught me how to drive in the mountains in a tractor trailer because when I first went with Warner Enterprises they gave me a trainer that was on a dedicated Home Depot account where we never left Florida so I never had training in the mountains I had to teach myself and it's very scary doing this by yourself as a rookie on the way down I rode my brakes until they started smoking then I pulled over to let my brakes cool down it was very scary so yes this mountain can and will take your life if you don't know what you're doing

Cool video. I got a kick out of the Swift comment he threw in there. But the truck speed limit by law is 45 on Monteagle the graduated speed you see on the yellow and black sign is a suggested speed. Laws are written in black and white. Suggestions are written in Black and Yellow.

I drove for swift for a year and a half. My favorite thing about them? Well, one of the only good things about them; If there was a truck inspection, they waived me on through. I never sat for an inspection.

What ever happened to shadowing? Stay side be side with a fellow driver who will let you in at the right time. This helps reduce the bottle neck and encourages trucker courtesy. But, of course I know the answer, those days are gone. Many truckers today do not know what flashing the lights even mean anymore..... just sad. Great video btw.

I live in Chattanooga and I’ve done that hill countless times over the last 18 years. Thankfully I’ve been smart enough to not be the first to the bottom.
