Bahaha. I agree that we never stop learning, and no one will ever know everything about driving, but if you haven't got driving figured out enough to teach someone after 24 years, it's time for a new career. Driving isn't the most challenging skill, it isn't like we are doctors or astronauts. I'm gonna have to ask you to calm down.

It is the same with motorcycles. Never force, listen, etc... when you have an ear for it, you don't even need to look at the gauges and it makes shifting so much faster. Throttle control is important.

Through driving school all they taught was double clutching so that’s all I did. When I finally got out of school and found me a trucking job my trainer tried to teach me to float even though he himself grinded gears all the time. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to float properly until I watched this video. I figured out that the main thing I was doing wrong was I would let my foot completely off the throttle when shifting. Thanks a lot for making this video and for doing a job explaining it.

Overall a very good presentation. Emphasizing not forcing the shifter is key. Over 50 years of helping people learn to drive a manual shift, from dates in high school to a grandaughter and in cars,pickups and big trucks, I have them start using an open palm. It not only shows how little effort it takes to shift, it prevents a "death grip" on the shifter from nervousness and avoids forcing the gears. Well done. Enough talking- let's drive!

Rolling resistance determines how much speed you lose coasting on flat ground over a given time - you need to know how your truck and load handle that to hit the "shift gates". I have three old non-synchro trucks I drive (two 5x4 twin sticks and one OLD 13sp) and one nice "modern" 10 speed. I get it.

I have to give you a huge thank you!! I am a recent graduate and graduated driving a 10 speed. My first Job which I'm still there only has automatic. It's a seasonal job. So right now I'm in search of a new job. I applied for a job and they only have manual transmissions. I was nervous super nervous cause I wasn't sure if could drive them. Well the day of test I found out I couldn't. I was just struggling missing gears fail attempt at downshifting. I was just doing double clutching the whole time. It was a mess. So obviously I didn't pass. the tester ask me "you don't know how to float gears?" Nope, But heard of it. I was beating myself of my failure. So I decided to go on KZbin to learn this floating gears. I came across your video and man what can I say. I know how to float gears. I applied for a second job. They gave me a drive test and I start the job in 2 weeks. The explanation was so smooth and I caught up quick. I just want to say thank you. You can say you saved my career in trucking.

I've got 46 years of driving trucks..been watching KZbin 4 or 5 years and occasionally look at shifting vids,you touched several points most don't realize..like not removing foot from accelerator pedal altogether but rather controlling rpms up or down as needed to match gear speeds before nudging shifter in or out the gear, I explain it as positive/ negative or neutral torque...also finger tips push or pull shifter, if using your upper arm strength you can't properly feel the gears lining up prior to meshing (big difference between rubbing and forcing the mesh)1 guy I trained couldn't figure it out until I made him let go of the stick as he passed thru neutral which made him relax all the pressure that was causing the grinding..really enjoyed your effort to make sense of it all! Good video!

It's never ending with me learning about floating gears. I attempt it in my five speed coupe for giggles and also because I want to get a CDL, I was never under the impression that you don't let off the throttle when shifting up. I always thought you had to let go. Learn something new everyday.

I am a full time driver (43 years) and a part time trainer. I train my students to double clutch at first, and then I show them shifting without the clutch, so that when they are more experienced they can try "floating" later. No need to drop a transmission out on the road. I teach them exactly the same as you do. You only need light pressure on the stick for any shift up or down. If you own your own truck, it is really nice to heat up the stick, and bend it so that it almost touches the seat in low gear. With that arrangement it shifts like a dream. You've done the best demo I've seen yet. Can you now show the guys how to shift a 13, 15 and maybe 18 speed? Great job !
@carlylea

Wow, thanks for the great comment, Doug. I would like to do a video on an 18 or 13 speed, but both of the trucks I own are 10 speeds. If I am ever driving an 13, 15, or 18, I will make another video. I have ran 18 speeds in the past, although I never found myself ever having to split the lower gears, and virtually always ran them like a 13. Thanks again, means a lot.

@donttreadonme this is old, but the ECU, electronic controls now "think" faster than people and can control gear, timing of shift, fuel flow etc in a blink. With the 6-10spd automatics now the ECU makes them faster to shift than most people so they are quicker and a lot of the time they get better mileage because they will short shift you when you don't need the power where with a manual you wind up keeping them in the power band to avoid constant shifting.

The instructor that did my ride along was great he knew my family history in the trucking world and to this day he still teases me about it I though for sure I wasn't getting the job I cough my self more times than not shifting without the clutch.

Steed Blackman Automated manuals aren’t necessarily a bad thing, but being able to creep into a loading dock, to roll start it (when the battery is dead) or to manage slick terrain (mud, ice) having the clutch pedal is certainly nice. Never missing a shift and not ever wasting fuel (during the shift itself) definitely has its benefits (no waste/damage).

Our instructor who's a great guy tells us that all the time. If you're forcing the stick, you're doing something wrong. Before I used to say, "I'm not doing anything wrong. It's a mechanical issue". But, the instructor is always right, as it should be.

Exactly how I was taught and drive. Great video, don't listen to the guys telling you to shift that cummins @15 unless your light or in low range, your just overloading the engine regardless of what bullshit the dealer feeds you. If you don't belive me look in your cummins owners manual or look it up on cummins official site. They advise not to pull the engine under peak torque longer than 30sec and the torque range on all of the cummins engines in the trucks I drive regardless of year is between 1450 and 1650, so after shifting you shouldn't be under 1400 ideally. I like to keep it at 1500 (top of torque curve) which is why I prefer 13-18 spd. Makes it easier to run it between 15-17 which in my experience is where cummins engines love to run.

Great video! Would be fun to try that sometimes. Here in Sweden (and most of Europe) trucks use synchronized gearboxes so you shift them almost like a car. Just the shifting pattern thats different. Almost all new trucks use automatic gearboxes and you actually have to pay extra to get a manual.

@johanankarback6821
@johanankarback6821 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, didn't know that. Over here Volvos 12-speed range/split gear box is considered to be the best there is. I learned to drive on a truck with one and I liked it a lot. It´s a lot that's different between us and european trucks. For one all trucks are cab over engine. You can't buy a conventional truck as you call it over here anymore. Mostly that has to do with regulations in EU for overall vehicle lengths.
@SternDrive
@SternDrive 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is all about length restrictions. Over here in North America we have so much space and open 6 lane highways that we don't have the length restrictions that we used to have.

A technique I use while shifting up my motorcycle is letting off the throttle just so much that there's no power through the clutch at all. Then I go from that throttle position, either letting off a little more for upshifts or actually keeping it a little bit more on it for downshifts. Just revving the engine at a standstill gives you a pretty good idea of how sensitive the rpm are to your throttle pedal in a clutched out situation.
