Thanks for the great explanation. I just cannot get why this University of the People is surrounded with so radically different feedback. Some people are saying it's great, good value for time, professors are great and so on, but then there are others who say exactly opposite thing. And the most interesting is that these two groups of people are roughly 50/50. So it is really difficult to get convinced where exactly is the truth... really though one...
@manoiumusicgames57633 жыл бұрын
I can see why it’s divisive. It’s all about expectations really. It’s also a bit of luck. The quality of instructors at UoPeople varies greatly from terrible to amazing. You don’t get to pick who your instructor is, so you’re stuck with that they assign you. In my experience, about half the instructors have been great, about 40% have been just average, and then 5% incredible and 5% awful. I still believe that overall, this is a great value and hope they don’t change the tuition too much.

So this has been useful. I was hoping I could progress at my own pace (which is usually about twice what is normally expected) I have until June 2021 where I will not need to work. I was looking for an associate's degree program I can complete in a year at home working at it 60 - 80 hours a week. But if they have a set schedule that you have to follow that means that I will likely be at best half way through the associate's program when I will have to go back to my 70 hour per week job which at that point will preclude my obtaining any additional education. That won't work for me. I'm 60 and I have this 11 month window of opportunity then my next chance will be when I retire at 70 and I won't be in the mood to go to school at that point.

Hey Daniel. Thanks for the video. I have a couple questions to help me decide what I'm going to do. I want to be a programmer and I want to go to get a degree and get a job. I'm almost 30 years old. I have been very poor throughout my life supporting myself after running away from an abusive home at the age of 16. Now I am on my feet and I am finding myself able to actually reasonably consider college, finally, for the first time in my life. I have been out of school for 14 years essentially. I recently went and re-obtained my GED(Long story, I obtained it when I was 17 but my crazy Dad put me under his last name when my legal name is my mothers last name so, my GED from 17 years old "doesn't exist" under my legal last name and I only recently found this out), so I literally went in and went through the test and passed everything just fine. I am a very smart person but due to life circumstances I've been working construction and it's just a waste of my life. I want to do something that matters to me. But I digress, the questions; I have no previous college experience. My plan is to go to college at UoP, and during it, work part time, study and practice programming a lot outside of school(Mainly through Freecodecamp.org), and build a super strong portfolio over the next couple of years. My goal is just to have a good paying job that I enjoy. One day MAYBE go for masters if I really want to, but I am unsure if it is needed. Realistically I just want to make around 100k a year and do something I love. Do you think it is entirely reasonable for me to just go through UoP, and hope that one day they have a masters that I can jump into, or possibly look into other colleges that would accept the transfer? I know you kind of did answer this in the video when you said if you're just trying to get a job, you absolutely recommend this, but I just want a solid path. I'm almost 30, I'm done wasting time and I want to just go for this, but I want to be sure in my decision of applying for UoP before I do. So I guess the end question is, do you think if I seriously apply myself outside of school as well, build a great portfolio I can show to employers, that I can get a solid job as a programmer in the future that would look upon this University in a positive light? Thanks!
@manoiumusicgames57634 жыл бұрын
Christopher Hunt hey Chris! I definitely would recommend UoPeople in your situation. I’m still a student, currently enrolled and trying to keep up with the Operating Systems course. I think UoPeople has tremendous value where they are now, and they just announced today that they are seeking regional accreditation. With literally all universities forced to move to online courses these days with the virus, I think UoPeople’s model has a great advantage. Honestly, the price for trying it out will be the $60 application fee. If you take the two introductory courses (Programming Fundamentals and UNIV1001) and don’t like it, there is no further commitment, and you can quit during final exams. From my experience, I can say that it’s definitely worth the money and time. I am in a different situation, though, as I have a doctorate degree in music composition, and a full time job at the moment in that field. So the computer science for me is a lifelong interest and hobby that I pursue while developing video games. As far as the masters, only time will tell. But they are pursuing the accreditation needed to continue to any other online graduate program. With jobs, it’s really up to the employer how much they value the degree. Best idea is to build up a solid personal portfolio during your studies.

@manoiumusicgames57635 жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon. I am about a quarter of the way through my degree. I should finish by the end of 2020. I decided to apply for an Associates just to see how this university works for me. You can always continue on to a Bachelors afterward. I will most likely continue. Regarding your credits, I know that U of People accepts credit transfers for a small fee. That should accelerate your degree considerably. That being said, if you are almost done at your local college and have the means to finish, I would rather get that degree first, as it would probably be more widely accepted in the job market and academia.

So what you are saying is uop isn’t as accepted. Strange that they been around for years now but only got accreditation in 2014 I believe is it not? Although who wouldn’t want to complete a degree. I am not really sure on the course structure and no video or even their site explains it well enough. The peer grading is not the norm. And the many exams in a year is not easy. I would rather have those exams passable if you know what I mean. I can do a degree here but is much more expensive and believe it or not there aren’t any exams and it’s 3 year to get the degree. It used to be $100 per course, but now it’s more expensive, $120. So an Associates would be $2400 and Bachelors $4800. You pay the examination fee at the end of each term, so you don’t have to pay upfront. If you start now, you would pay $60 application fee, then start the classes and at the end of the term (2 months), you would pay $120x2, so $240. Then $120 at the end of every class you take. They do have scholarships though that help with that, so you should look into it!

Some seemed very active and knowledgeable, and were quick to answer any questions and participate in discussions. They also had an online presence, where they were easy to verify as real professionals in the field. I did have one or two classes with dubious instructors that felt almost like bots. Mostly because they were not as active, and gave very generic feedback to assignments. Overall, I would say 80% positive experience with instructors, and a few of those were exceptional. Pretty similar with materials. Most textbooks are great, some are a bit old.

I think it just takes time. Even though the university has tons of students, most likely only a small number actually graduate and have the opportunity to share their success. A university degree in general is worth as much as your employer values it. If your employer wants a regionally accredited degree, then this is not for you. If your employer wants you, but you need a degree to qualify, then you’re all set. Regardless, most likely you’ll need a strong portfolio and projects to get a developer job anyway these days, the UoPeople degree is just a bonus. However, as far as quality of education goes, I believe UoPeople is fantastic!

U of People offers an MBA program, and also has partnerships with top universities (including NYU) to accept credit transfers. Generally speaking,regionally accredited graduate programs expect a regionally accredited Bachelors. U of People is nationally accredited, which I understand limits options at the moment. One path that I know some students take is to do an Associates at U of People, transfer credits to a regionally accredited school that accepts UofPeople credits (eg.: UC Berkeley, WGU), and complete their Bachelors there before moving on to Masters.

They divide the academic year into 5 terms, each term is 9 weeks long. It’s a bit weird, and definitely not typical of most universities in the US. But I think it works well enough, and it does make everything more flexible.

It is, but at the moment their accreditation might not be accepted at most US based “regular” universities. I think the quality of education is great, and I believe that U of People is working on that.

@manoiumusicgames57633 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are looking for and where you are at. If you are planning on a Masters from the United States and/or European Union, I wouldn't count on UofPeople as your only degree. Otherwise, it's a fantastic inexpensive way to get a government recognized CS degree in the US.

Dear Daniel, thanks for your sharing about Uop. You know that application fee is $60 + assessment fee $ 100 per exam and the total of bachelor degree is $ 4060. Can you please explain in detail about whatever in used in $ 4060. Thank you.
@NadineLynch104 жыл бұрын
10 courses =$1000, 20 “second year” =$2000, 30 courses “third year”=$3000, 40 courses “last year (4th year)= $4000 and the $60 is your once off application fee. So $100 per course per term is your exams and the good thing is that you don’t have to pay in the full $4060, as you just pay in for the exams per course (1 course = $100, 2 courses =$200, 3 courses =$300 and 4 courses (maximum amount of courses you can take per term)=$400. I hope this helped you understand a bit better

I want an advice. I am a student in another uni at a major that I don't like, however, I have to complete because there's 1 and half year for me to graduate. Now, I applied for the UoPeople Bs CS because I like this major and already try to learn by myself and I learnt the basics of programming and I exposed more than one language. I am studying electrical power engineering and this major is hard , can I handle my time between UoPeople and my studying or it will be quit difficult. I think that my knowledge in programming will help me firstly and after graduation form electrical major, I'll be free and also I guess the subjects in UoPeople will be advanced , Am I right?

@manoiumusicgames57634 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you would not be able to. UofPeople is currently just nationally accredited, so its credits are not accepted at most universities in the US. However, some have very specific and limited partnerships, like UC Berkley or NYU, but please do a lot of research and make a good decision before signing up! Also, I know that they have announced that they are working on getting the regional accreditation. If they do, the the answer is a definite YES, but I would also assume the prices will rise.

Great video content! I have few questions regarding the computer science bachelor program. I appreciate if you could help me out here as your information/opinion will affect my decision. I hope other people can find this helpful as well. 1. How long usually does it take to complete the assignments? I have about 3 years of experience in programming and some coop experience in this field, and I'm just trying to assess how long it would take me to complete them. 2. How many hours per week do you allocate to studying the materials? and are the video lectures recorded as well? 3. What is the average score of Math and CS classes usually? Like B+, B-, etc? 4. What is the grading scheme? For example 40% exam, 20% quizzes, etc? 5. Is it possible to go through a course and end up not doing the exam? Is there any sort of penalty or fee that I will have to pay if that happens? 6. Have you transferred any university credits to here? I have about 60 credits at a Canadian university, and it will help me a lot if I can transfer most of these credits.
@manoiumusicgames57635 жыл бұрын
EZprogramming Thank you for watching my video! I asked a fellow student that has completed the associates degree requirements and has experience with credit transfers to help me answer your questions: 1. UoPeople suggests setting aside at least 15 hours a week per course (30 hours a week for 2 courses); to read, study, and complete assignments. How long an assignment takes depends on how well you have understood the week's material. 2. There are no video lectures at UoPeople. All materials are through textbooks and open courseware readings. Some courses have optional videos you can watch but it isn't any information that isn't found in the Reading Assignments. This is so the University is accessible to everyone, even those with minimal technology. 3. For Associate's students, there are 2 required math courses. For Bachelor's students there are 4 required math courses. 4. The grading scheme is different for each course. However they all include a percentage for Written/Programming Assignments, Discussion Forum Assignments, Graded Quizzes, Learning Journal, and Final Exam. 5. I do not know of anyone who passed a course and did not take the final exam. Attendance in the course is mandatory. Attendance is measured and recorded from posted responses to weekly discussion forum questions; participation in the peer assessment process; and submission of weekly assignments, Learning Journal entries, quizzes, and the final exam. Make-up exams are not allowed, except in exceptional circumstances. 6. Each course is $100 flat for Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. I have transferred 9 courses to UoPeople, they were General Education courses. They cost $17 each to transfer after being approved. As with any University, you send your transcripts and a transfer request and they evaluate the credits for approval. I personally chose not to transfer anything, because my other degrees are in music. I am very busy in my daily life with work and family and I personally get by with two courses with 5 hours or so per week. But 15 per course is very strongly recommended to get the best results.

Steven Kyle hey Steven! Yes, I’m still a student. I have 2 more terms to complete my Associates, and then I plan to continue taking Bachelors classes. I do still like and support the school! Some classes have been hit or miss with instructors. Web Programming I for example seemed like a very poorly designed course, and the instructor was barely active, to a point that I suspected she was a bot. On the other hand, I’ve had many other courses since which had great instructors that were very involved and passionate about the course. A very positive thing is that they are actively pursuing regional accreditation now, but I’m not sure how long it will take. If you just want to learn programming and computer science in general, I think it’s a great option. Welcome!

For a complete education is better an Associate Degree or a Bachelor's Degree. you know where i can find I testimonials from Italian or European students and if someone has obtained the conversion of the degree with a 100% valid in their own country (in Italy it could be done through a procedure ...).Thanks.
@manoiumusicgames57635 жыл бұрын
Hi, UoPeople got accredited in 2014. Their accreditation is national ( www.deac.org ), which is not as widely accepted as regional accreditation, at least in the United States. In Italy, I’m not sure... I would email a masters program in Italy and ask if they would accept a bachelors from University of the People. I can tell you for sure that we have many students from all over Europe at U of People. So, I’m assuming that there is degree recognition there. Also, I would start with an Associates to see if it works for you, then if it does move on to bachelors.
@ethanlee-c3d5 жыл бұрын
If I study with uop I do the bachelors. This is because the bachelors is the standardised recognised qualification. There is a lot I might not like about uop. But I am guessing they are very flexible in the way that it’s pay as you go, I mean if we do a couple of courses then decide to stop, we still have those courses completed and can always continue afterwards. In another degree I don’t think it has that flexibility, once tuition is paid then we must complete the degree, or the year. There’s no refund or long breaks. Am I right??
